Don't Expect Miracles

When trying to contact your potential customers, while you may not have detailed demographics available, there are some things you can do to sharpen the focus a bit. If you were selling a health product for example geared toward older people, you can automatically rule out the "kiddie sites" or ones that appeal to a young crowd such as the sites where you download music.

Ezines that are based strictly on humor, are for the most part the least targeted. Don't get me wrong here. Humor has its place as long as it is in good taste, is not offensive, and is part of a publication that reaches a specific group.

So, using some common sense, you identify either some web sites where you can place an ad, or a newsletter that appears to cater to your potential client base.

The next step is tracking your results. This is where many budding entrepreneurs miss the boat. There are a number of ways to track where your inquiries are coming from. Probably the easiest is to give an email address, which is unique to that ad.

If you have your own domain, you most likely have unlimited aliases that all come to the same email address. AOL gives you multiple email addresses, and if all else fails, get yourself a supply of free email addresses.

You can also use the web to help in your tracking. Designing a unique form, which sends you an email for each ad someone responds to, is not an overwhelming task. You can build a keyword right into the form, that the person filling it out will never see, that lets you know exactly where they saw the ad.

Newsletters are a good choice. If a newsletter has been around for awhile, and has a decent number of subscribers, they are doing something right. If your ad is not pulling, odds are either you are in the wrong target market, or have a crummy ad.

The first mistake someone might make is confusing subscribers with potential customers. One newsletter with 500,000 subscribers may produce minimal results, while another with only a few thousand or so, may produce a lot. Here is where you have to determine if the newsletter you are considering is reaching your target market.

Many people will throw together a "crummy" ad, and then blame the vehicle they use to advertise in when it doesn't work. If it is reaching your target market, and you have a decent product or service, which is affordable to those you are trying to reach, you will do business.

But, don't expect miracles. A one time ad will not normally produce results. Once you get an ad that works, in a publication that is drawing, stick with it, even if the responses level off. Don't forget that most decent publications on the Internet have a high subscription rate, and get hundreds of new people signing up every week, who are all potential customers.

Report Points To Malware

A recent monthly report from Internet security firm ScanSafe calls attention to the rising incidence of malware on social networking sites. According to the report, as many as 1 in 600 profile pages contained sypware, adware, or other malicious software.

Social networking sites have become extremely popular with children and college students, and Eldar Tuvey, chief executive and cofounder of ScanSafe, said his company's report points to another risk users face. "[B]eyond unsafe contact with harmful adults, these sites are an emerging and potentially ripe threat vector that can expose children to harmful software," he said. The report noted that some sites, including Facebook and LinkedIn, have fewer malware pages than sites without restrictions on who can join.

ScanSafe noted that in addition to social networking traffic from teens, use of the sites has also grown to represent about 1 percent of Internet usage in the workplace, potentially exposing corporate networks and users as well.


Is Starting An Online Business For You?

Working at home has been a dream of many that goes back many years. Staying at home and enjoying watching the kids grow up is a goal worth fighting for.

Let's take a look into making a living or part time living from the comfort of your home. You owe it to yourself to gain the freedom a home business can offer.

In the past, there have been multi-level marketing plans to sell everything from vitamins to soap. There have been mail order catalog opportunities. Many tried buying and selling real estate. Each of these opportunities made many people a lot of money, but each of them also cost many people more money.

More people have spent money than have made money in every business venture.

The problem is many inexperienced people get into moneymaking schemes after attending a meeting somewhere. The offer may be legitimate, but most people fail in business.

According to the US Small Business Administration, over 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 95% fail with the first five years. That is a scary statistic.

This means that the average business is doomed to fail from the beginning. It also means that you will lose a lot of money if you start a business. WOW! No wonder you are leery about putting up your hard-earned cash for what is statically a crapshoot, a roll of the dice.

So, what is the answer for the average person who does not want to lose their savings and even their home equity in a business? Start building a "digital business" online. Create a website that generates its income without you needing to invest in inventory or even lease a building to house your business. Then create two or ten more websites generating income for you.

You may not know how to create a website today. It is an easily learned skill. There is software you can buy or download free that will help you. There are tutorials on making a website profitable. You can do this.

Once you have a website online you can put other people’s advertising on your site and be paid when someone buys one of their products. This is called affiliate marketing. If this was my baby toys webpage and I mentioned a great baby toy with a link to my advertiser’s toy page you might go there and buy the toy. If you did, I would get a commission.

You could also put ads on your pages that only require someone to click on the ad for you to be paid. Again, if you were on my baby toy page and an ad talks about a toy. You click on the ad to go see it and I am paid for you clicking on the ad.

The advertiser feels their sales page is compelling enough for them to sell enough of that toy to cover their cost of the clicks that got you there.

Some advertisers do not require you to buy the product when you click on an ad, but you will not be paid unless you fill out their application. This is usually seen on sites like insurance sites or loan application sites. You do not have to get a policy or take out a loan for me to be paid. When you fill out the form, I qualify for my commission for sending you to the advertiser.

These are typically the ways a beginning website entrepreneur starts generating income on the Internet. Once you understand that part of internet marketing, you may move on to selling your own digital products.

A digital product is one that can be downloaded from your website. You can sell your own ebook you wrote yourself or an ebook you purchased and have the rights to sell online.

If you are a programmer, you can sell you own computer program from your site.

You could also sell someone else's program that you purchased the rights to sell. Notice that not all of the above ideas require you to invest in a lot of inventory. Even the products are free if you create them yourself. Not everything you are doing so far requires a large investment of your hard earned money. It does require a large investment of your time.

All of the material you need to create a website can be found free online if you do not want to purchase some popular program. Your only expense SHOULD be a domain of your own, such as yourdomain.com. You can get free hosting from various places but for moneymaking venture, this is not advised.

For a small investment, you too can be PRESIDENT OF YOUR OWN COMPANY.

Maybe the statistics are the same for success online as they are in other businesses, but this is a chance to find out without losing the farm doing it.

The reason most online / home based businesses fail or never make any money, is because of the lack of a plan. As with a brick and mortar, offline, business you have to know where you want to go, how you will get there and when. The old saying, "those who fail to plan, plan to fail" has never been more true than building an online business.

Do Something Nice

Nothing promotes your business like good word of mouth. When someone has a good experience with your company and tells other people about it, their word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising known.

A friend or associate telling you a product or service is good is vastly more effective than even the most expensive network TV commercial. We believe what friends tells us and often act on their advice.

I don't have any scientific proof that this is true, but I strongly suspect that doing something nice for someone is a major source of good word of mouth.

Make a point of doing something nice for a customer or prospect every day. This is especially rewarding when that person is someone who emailed you, sent you a letter, called you, or visited your store. These "active" people are the same ones who will take time to tell others about their experience.

In recent years when businesses have been cutting back and making employees work longer hours, random acts of kindness may be getting harder to find.

A small two-seater Cessna 152 plane crashed into a cemetery early this afternoon in central Poland.

Polish search and rescue workers have recovered 300 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the evening.

My son, Bunyan, is a construction foreman. One day he tumbled from a scaffold, managing to break his fall by grabbing on to parts of the scaffold on the way down. He received only minor scratches.

Embarrassed by the fall, he climbed back up to continue working. The he noticed his co-workers holding up hastily made signs reading 9.6, 9.8 and 9.4.
