Friend or Fraud
by Bob OsgoodbyI received an email from a valued Internet friend, alerting me to the fact that McAfee Site Advisor (you know, the anti-virus people) had classified my web site as a threat that could cause a breach of browser security. Now, if you don’t subscribe to their service, you can enter my web site URL, and be taken there. If you do have McAfee on your computer, they can redirect you to any place they wish. In this case, they take you to a page warning you about this.
What a crock! These self appointed guardians of the Internet have these types of decisions made by a computer robot that checks out all the web sites. Wouldn't you think that if the robot found something that appeared suspicious, a human being would intervene and check it out, before they label it as a threat.
They labeled a web page on our web site as a possible cause of browser security. It is a simple form that you fill out to subscribe to our Newsletter. If you wish, you can check it out at - http://adv-marketing.com/business/subscribe2.htm and make up your own mind. When looking at their warning, the average person who subscribes to McAfee, would be fearful of visiting the site.
Site Advisor was originally founded in April of 2005, by a group of MIT engineers who hoped to keep spam, adware and spyware from invading their family’s computers. McAfee acquired them in April of 2006.
When I examined McAfee’s site report on Adv-marketing.com, there was nothing listed there as being negative what gives? They say that when their robot browsed our web site, it made unauthorized changes to their PC. Oh, and did I say they also state that they put their email address in my forms. One of the forms was a request for a free E-Book. I guess when they got it, they considered that was an unauthorized change to their PC.
I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick and tired of other peoples computers doing stuff like this, and making decisions that could be very harmful to someone because it matched a computer algorithm that some mentally challenged programmer wrote. I also don't want them checking my mail that I receive to determine if it is spam. The bottom line is that they allow 95% of the spam to slip through because the spammers are smarter than they are, and then delete some important email that I want because it fits the profile of one their silly filters.
What right does McAfee have to intercept a request to visit one of my web pages and reroute it to one of theirs. In my judgment this is theft. McAfee Site Advisor is a wholly owned subsidiary of McAfee Inc. Is McAfee Inc. a “not for profit” organization? Not hardly.
Buy their software and you will be protected when surfing the net. Don't bet your computer on it. The Herald Tribune reported on the first of August that users of McAfee Software can be at risk by allowing access to information on their computers such as passwords and bank account numbers. A McAfee spokeswoman, Slobhan MacDermont, confirmed the vulnerability.
Marc Maiffret, chief hacking officer at eEye Digital Security, a competing maker of security products, said the vulnerability affected many of McAfee's most popular consumer products, including Internet Security Suite, SpamKiller, Privacy Service and Virus Scan Plus.
More importantly, if someone breaks into your computer, a “nip and tuck” to the software by a hacker, and while you may think you are on a secure Web Site, in reality you are in a world of hurt. You could enter the web address for your online banking and they could reroute you to a “look alike” site, get your account number and password, and steal your identity – not worth the risk folks.
I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of supposedly reputable firms acting like this (they say for the public good) who try to enhance their image, at the expense of others to make a buck. Anyone who does this, I feel is a fraud and not my friend. They were very quickly placed on my “do not do business” with list.

In The News
Dell Prioritizes Battery Replacements
Dell has announced certain prioritizations for its recall of 4.1 million laptop batteries. After reports of some batteries overheating and possibly catching fire, Dell reached a voluntary agreement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to replace the batteries.
Troy West, vice president and general manager of Dell's federal segment, said that priority will be given to customers in national security, health care, public safety, and emergency management services for replacement batteries, though he refused to say when the recall would be complete.
Early bulk shipments of replacement batteries were sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and Fort Hood, Texas. West also said that several thousand replacements have been sent to a parts hub in Kuwait that is distributing them to defense contractors.
Build Your Site for Success!
By Terri SeymourThere are many things to consider when you want to put up a website. Page design, layout, sections, colors, and navigation are a few things you will need to consider.
One thing you can do before you design your site is visit a few sites and see how they are set up. Take notice of things you found interesting and what makes each site stand out. Why do you like it? Why do you not like it? Take notes of your findings.
Color is very important in designing a website. To read more about colors in your design visit ColorMatters.com
Another important thing to remember when you are designing your website is that you want a clean, sharp, professional look. It might be pretty if your site looks like a Las Vegas nightclub, but your visitors will most likely get confused and annoyed and go to another site. You want a clean, uniform design on all pages which should also be easy to navigate.
Another thing you should think about is content. You want to provide quality, helpful information and content, not just sales and ads. Getting traffic to your site is not as hard as getting them to come back to your site. If you have quality information and resources, they will have a reason to come back.
For example: If you have a website about pets, put up articles on pet care and have links to other websites (complimentary not competing) that contain resources for pet owners.
Do a search for article directories and/or banks and you should have no trouble finding articles of any subject. Use a couple targeted words in your search such as pet care article directory, etc.
Everybody loves a freebie! Offer free ebooks, free tutorials, free articles, free downloads, etc.
Another way to keep visitors coming back is to get them involved with your site. Start a discussion board, have a weekly or monthly contest, have your visitors fill out surveys and draw a winner from all the entries. Start a blog and keep the content fresh and up to date. Allow your visitors to post their comments.
There are many ways to get people involved. Be creative and always be adding fresh content to your site. Update regularly. This is also a must for the search engine spiders. If you want them to notice your site, you NEED to keep adding fresh and targeted content.
To let everybody know about your updates and new content, start your own ezine. With an ezine you will be able to build relationships with your visitors. You will gain their trust and keep them interested in visiting your site. Take a look at our free ezine publishing tutorial for help.
Building, maintaining and promoting a website is challenging, rewarding and takes a lot of work. You will have many ups and downs, but do not let the downs deter you from your goals. Best of luck to you all!

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyMake Your Web Site Deeper
Nielsen, the famous media ratings company, recently told us there has been a big change in the way people browse the Net.
In recent months people are surfing far fewer sites, but spending a lot more time on the sites they visit. You may have noticed this change in your own Internet use. I've seen it in mine.
Instead of finding big lists of web sites and hopping from one to another, I have a small list of favorites I visit often and explore extensively.
This may mean you need to design your web site in a different way. Add more content, more levels, and with additional detail. If someone wants to spend 20 minutes on your site, is there enough to keep them busy?
Frankly, this change in how customers use the web can be a very good thing. It is hard to make a sale when people are intent on getting to the next site. More time spent on your site means more of a commitment to buy.
It also means fewer sales abandoned at the shopping cart. Prospects don't want to walk away empty-handed after spending a big chunk of their valuable time studying your site.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Marriage Tension
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=A friend of mine was having a bit of marital-tension in his household and was trying to figure-out just what to do about it.
In the course of our conversation, I happened to mention to him that: "You know, quite often God speaks to us through our wives."
My friend looked at me kind-a funny and said, "Wow! I didn't know God used that kind of language!"
-----
Ed asks his ten year-old son if he knows about the birds and the bees.
"I don't want to know!" the child said, bursting into tears.
Confused, the father asked his son what was wrong.
"Oh dad," he sobbed, "at age six I got the 'there's no Santa' speech. At age seven I got the 'there's no Easter bunny' speech. Then at age 8 you hit me with the 'there's no tooth fairy' speech! If you're going to tell me now that grown-ups don't really have sex, I've got nothing left to live for!"
-----
Dad," a teenaged girl says, running into her father's den, "I'd like to kiss you good-bye before I go to school!"
"You're too late, honey. Your mother just did that two minutes ago, and I don't have any cash left on me."
-----
A couple of women moved in across the hall from me. One is a middle-aged gym teacher, and the other is a social worker in her mid twenties. These two women go everywhere together, and I've never seen a man go into their apartment or come out.
Do you think they could be Lebanese?

Feedback - Q&A
Bob – Lately I have received a flurry of ads claiming I can get a f-r-ee Cell phone and or laptop computer, simply by filling out a short survey.
For some reason I hesitate when it comes to adding, or doing something to my website. Would you have any suggestions for software?
Dwight
-----
Dwight - I did an article on these ads you receive via email last May. You can read it at: http://adv-marketing.com/business/itip060520.html
Which brings me to the second part of your question - I use two packages for my HTML work. The Newsletters are archived like this one using a package called Netscape Communicator. I use (and prefer) the older version of the software, although much newer versions are available. I am using Version 4.8 which is available at: http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive47x.jsp I originally installed this on a Windows 98 System, but it has migrated very well to XP. This program requires no knowledge of HTML coding.
The second package I use is called "Hippie" but does required knowledge of HTML. This is a more efficient package than Communicator and creates more economical code.
