Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob OsgoodbyCollateral Damage
It was reported that twenty-six innocent people were killed in the bombing of suspected terrorist headquarters. These people, as innocent as they might be, were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Aren’t these terms just a way of trying to minimize the effects caused by someone who “screwed up.” While these incidents, tragic as they are, have one saving grace – they weren’t done on purpose – they were accidents, and referred to as collateral damage.
Don’t think that this happens only in armed conflict. It is going on around us on a daily basis. A casual examination of your “junk mail” will very quickly reveal this. There are people out there who are trying to scam you in every possible way. The Internet has given birth a whole new breed of scamsters, who now find their prey in the reaches of cyberspace.
It has also given birth to a whole new breed of victims. Those who feel they are sophisticated enough to avoid these scams, but in reality are a willing target. Lured by greed, and the promise they will make millions, they bite "hook, line and sinker". These people are participants however, and deserve what they get.
Others buy into what on the surface, appears to be a legitimate enterprise. These are honest people who buy into a program that they think will hopefully supplement their income. They then go out and try to recruit others into the program. If the program goes bust, they are considered “collateral damage,” and many times the originators of the program simply “fold their tents” and disappear into the night.
But wait – how can the original scamsters get away with this? Hmm – what does “WWW” stand for? World Wide Web. Many of these offers have web sites that are offshore, and the perpetrators cannot be prosecuted in the country in which you reside. Others simply haven’t been caught yet. Many of these scams are simply disguised illegal pyramids, but on the surface, may be difficult to detect.
What is an illegal pyramid you might ask. As its name indicates, the pyramid scheme is structured like a pyramid. It starts with one person - the initial recruiter - who is on top, at the apex of the pyramid. This person recruits a second person, who is required to "invest" for example, $100 which is paid to the initial recruiter. In order to make his or her money back, the new recruit must recruit more people, each of whom will also have to invest $100. If the recruit gets 10 more people to invest, this person will make $900 with just a $100 investment.
But the problem is that no wealth has been created, no product has been sold, and no service has been provided. It is impossible for the cycle to sustain itself, so people will lose their money somewhere down the line. Those who are most vulnerable are those towards the bottom of the pyramid, where it becomes impossible to recruit the number of people required to pay off the previous layer of recruiters.
It takes a great deal of research to investigate a particular offer. One of the best ways is to search the web on the Company Name. First of all, forget about the positive comments you find, as they are most likely participants trying to hook you into the program. Also discount glowing testimonials from people you have no way to contact. A testimonial from “John in Des Moines” simply doesn’t cut it.
Look for negative comments and then contact them via email for their story. They may give you some insight into the supposed opportunity. It takes about 6 months to figure out on your own that it is a scam. Above all, use your innate common sense and you may avoid being part of the “collateral damage.”

Windows Vista Antipiracy Technology Locks PCS
Microsoft has embedded antipiracy technology in Windows Vista that locks a PC if the operating system isn't activated using a legitimate product registration key within 30 days of installation. The system will run with reduced functionality until activated.
The technology is part of Microsoft's new Software Protection Platform and will be part of future versions of all Microsoft products, said Cori Hartje, director of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Software Initiative. Scheduled for wide availability in January, Vista is the successor to Windows XP.

Dealing With Distractions
by Kelley RobertsonIn today’s business world it is not uncommon for many sales people to work from a home office. At first this may seem like a great opportunity, however, it does create some unique challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is the number of distractions that can take us away from our work and prevent us from achieving our objectives.
When you work from a home office it is easy to get distracted from work, especially if it is work that you do not particularly enjoy like prospecting or cold calling. Watering the plants, running errands or even doing laundry can be a welcome change from the daily drudgery of selling. And, if you have young children, the number of distractions increases dramatically.
I, too, work from a home office and have had to deal with this challenge. Here are a few ideas that can help manage these distractions and improve your productivity. - Create an office. When I first began working from home almost a decade ago, I used to work at my dining room table. Unfortunately, this put me in the middle of our household action. My wife would turn on the television and I would be instantly distracted from my work. In other cases, she would talk to me or ask me a question simply because I was in the same room. As a result, it was often difficult to focus on my work. Now I have an office and do the majority of my work there. If you don’t have space to create an office, find somewhere in your house that has the least amount of traffic and opportunities for distractions.
- Set specific “business” hours. This is particularly important if you have young children. It can be very difficult for children to understand that they can’t disturb us while we’re working. If you have an office, close your door and place a do not disturb sign on it. This is particularly important if you are making client calls because it prevents family members from inadvertently barging in on you during a critical call.
- Use a “to do” list—everyday. Having a list of what you need to accomplish each day can help keep you focused; otherwise, it becomes too easy to do other things around the house. If you know that you need to accomplish a certain number of tasks by the end of the day, it can prevent you from getting distracted during the day. One of the challenges with this is that household duties or running errands are more enjoyable compared to work we have to complete. However, I have frequently found that once I get involved in my task, the desire to do something else fades.
- Set deadlines for the projects you’re working on. Although I don’t have anyone holding me accountable to these deadlines, it find that this approach can help keep me on track. You can also share these deadlines with other people to help keep yourself focused especially if this type of accountability works for you.
- Give your permission to relax from time-to-time. It’s okay to allow yourself to get distracted once in a while. As long it’s not a regular occurrence, you don’t have to worry too much about it. However, if your relaxation time overtakes your work time, then you need to reconsider your priorities.
- Share your goals and objections with a group of advisors. This type of accountability works well for many people because they know they will have to report their progress on specific projects.
- Recognize that the results you achieve are a direct result of the effort you put into your work. When I first started my private practice, it was easy to put aside work and do chores or run errands. In my first year, I treated work like a part-time job, clocking an average of 20-25 hours per week. When I evaluated my results at the end of the year I realized I couldn’t afford to maintain this mentality. So I started working more. And, I got better results. I eventually learned that the more effort I put into my work, the better results I achieved in terms of the revenue and income I generated. This made it easier to avoid the distractions and focus more on my work.
- Lastly, you can try an approach I learned from Brian Tracy many years. When you find yourself procrastinating on a particular task or project, repeat the following three words to yourself over and over. “Do it now.” This can be a great way to prevent yourself from getting distracted by other things you would prefer to do.
Distractions are sometimes positive. A break away from work can clear your mind, give you the opportunity to refresh yourself, and increase your energy level. However, it is important to remember that you have a responsibility to yourself and your business to limit these distractions.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin Nunley7 Ways Inexpensive Ways To Market
Not all advertising costs big bucks. An ad in this ezine is probably THE cheapest way to reach a large quality audience.
Here are some other ways to save big on very effective ads:
* Desktop publishing makes catalogs and brochures easy to produce. Create your own booklet to include with orders.
* Get a toll free number. Even though long distance calls aren't nearly as expensive as they used to be, many customers will call you faster if you list an 800 number. Mine is 603-249-9519. Using the phone to sell person-to-person is often the fastest way to get a buy.
* Advertise in specialty and neighborhood newspapers. I get incredible response advertising in an entertainment paper placed in restaurants. A classified ad is just $10 per week.
* Buy TV ads on cable TV. Cable rates are cheaper and you can limit your commercials to specific parts of your city.
* Get a big cell phone package and give your cell number out to everyone. When customers can reach you just about any time, you get the sale.
* Give away or sell your own video. Nine in ten people own a VCR. One friend has sold hundreds of his video telling how he earns a living selling antiques on eBay.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
The U.S. Tax Code
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=The U.S. Tax Code is pretty complex, but sometimes there are little nuggets of clarity that really make sense. Yesterday in my class we read from the Internal Revenue Code.
Section 708(a) of the Internal Revenue Code states: "...an existing partnership shall be considered as continuing if it is not terminated."
I guess it's just like an individual shall be considered as alive if he or she is not dead.

There was once a snail who was sick and tired of his reputation for being so slow. He decided to get some fast wheels to make up the difference. After shopping around a while, he decided that the Datson 240-Z was the car to get. So the snail goes to the nearest Datsun dealer and says he wants to buy the 240-Z, but he wants it repainted "240-S".
The dealer asks, "Why 'S'?"
The snail replies, "'S' stands for snail. I want everybody who sees me roaring past to know who's driving."
Well, the dealer doesn't want to lose the unique opportunity to sell a car to a snail, so he agrees to have the car repainted for a small fee.
The snail gets his new car and spent the rest of his days roaring happily down the highway at top speed. And whenever anyone would see him zooming by, they'd say "Wow! Look at that S-car go!"

A colleague was invited to hold a speech in Japan. Aware of his reputation as a very good speaker, he was surprised that his audience did not react at all to any of his perfectly timed jokes and witticisms. In fact, the audience did not react to anything he said.
Somewhat put down, he went back to his seat and a Japanese gentleman appeared on the stage. This man had a terrific success! People laughed and applauded, and although the original speaker could not understand one bit of what was said, still he started to applaud, as the man evidently deserved praise for this perfect speech.
He was interrupted by the chairman of the conference, "No no, sir. You must not applaud."
Dumfounded, he protested: "But why? This man is obviously a very good speaker."
"No sir, you must not applaud. He is translating your speech."
