Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob OsgoodbyFirst Impressions
First impressions are extremely important if you hope to do business on the Web. After you refine your ads, and if you make your pitch to a targeted group, you will start to get visitors to your web site. Here is where many would be entrepreneurs drop the ball.
Putting up a web site is not a difficult task, but designing a good one is, and if you don't pay attention, it might be working against you. Think about it, the web site is not only the first impression of you and your business, it is crucial to your success or failure.
People don't waste a whole lot of time when visiting a site. If it doesn’t appear to contain they are looking for, or isn't professional looking, they may just "click away". While looks are important, you must spend time on developing good copy. Copy written by affiliate programs has been seen over and over, and while it may have been effective at one time, it is so overused that people immediately recognize it for what it is.
In addition to good copy, which of course has no spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors, it clearly states what you are offering. Many web sites offer a real challenge to try to figure out what they are trying to sell. The offer should be the first thing they see. The information must also flow logically, and not leave a lot of questions unanswered.
They should find complete information about your offer, it should also have a call to action, which entices the visitor to purchase from you. It must also have an order form, or instructions that are easy to follow. It is a real plus to let the prospect know a little bit about you. Your picture on the site can go a long way to help instill confidence.
There is some confusion on the value of links. Some advocate that a good web site should be divided into separate sections connected by links. Others feel that a single long web page will score higher in the search engine rankings.
There are basically two types of links. One goes to a completely separate web page, and is considered an external link. Another type is referred to as an internal link. These point to different "parts" within the same web page. Both have value, however internal links are a little friendlier. If someone clicks on one and the next "part" logically flows from the previous one, people will be more inclined to read on.
While it is a good idea to have your links on the side of the page, you should avoid the use of frames, which divides the page into two logical pieces that can be independently manipulated. At the current time, sites constructed with frames are not search engine friendly, although this could change.
Links should be clear as to where they will take you. It is crucial that the titles of the links, not only make sense, but actually take someone to that information. Each site should have links that are unique, and it is not a good idea to have information in the target, that is not specified in the link.
If you have someone design the site for you, remember that their expertise is in web site design, and most likely they will know little, if anything, about what you are doing. They can construct the site and make it look good, but the copy and information flow is your responsibility. You should always take a break from the copy writing, and if at all possible, have someone else proof your work. Also you have to be careful of words that pass spell check, but are actually an error. Don't confuse words like "there" and "their".
Once you have the basic framework finished, it is now time to test it. Try to corral as many people as possible to review it. Is it clear and an effective presentation? You should probably avoid friends unless you are sure they will give you an honest evaluation.
The first impression your web site makes is crucial to success. If people have to "jump through hoops" to find out about your offer, or if it doesn't portray a professional image, the odds are they won't buy.

In The News
Pay For The Book, Or See The Ads
As the price of college textbooks continues to rise--at twice the rate of inflation over the past 20 years--faculty and students are seeking alternatives to traditional texts. For some students, that alternative is simply not buying all of the materials for their courses, according to the National Association of College Stores Foundation, which estimates that 65 percent of students forgo at least some texts.
Companies including Freeload Press offer another option: free textbooks with advertisements. Founded two years ago, Freeload allows students to download free PDFs of the textbooks they offer, with ads at the beginnings and ends of chapters. Students can print the PDFs or, for about $30, can order a printed copy from Freeload. Despite assurances from executives at Freeload that the ads do not influence the content of their texts, some, including Gary Ruskin, argue that an important line has been crossed. Ruskin, executive director of Commercial Alert, a nonprofit that works to limit the influence of ads, said the addition of ads to textbooks is simply another instance of companies trying to build consumer loyalty among a young audience with money to spend.
Yash Puri, professor of finance at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, said he was not concerned about using a Freeload textbook for his course because students are surrounded by ads and learn to ignore them.

10 Everlasting Profit Generators!
by Larry Dotson1. Sell an inexpensive product to sell an expensive product. If people like your inexpensive product, they'll be persuaded to buy your expensive one.
2. Allow your visitors to decided how much they want to pay for your product. I only recommend it for products that don't sell or ones that hardly sell.
3. Create an extra revenue stream with your web site's articles or content. Publish the first paragraph of each article and charge people to read the rest.
4. E-mail targeted e-zines and ask them to do a joint venture with you. Ask them to run your ad and in exchange they get a percentage of the profits.
5. Find a tiny niche for your new free e-zine. There are thousands of free e-zines; your e-zine needs to be extra specialized to attract new subscribers.
6. Test your ads by using autoresponders. You can have people e-mail your autoresponders to get more information and you just check your traffic reports.
7. Create credibility and trust with your visitors by telling them something they already know. They'll know for sure you're not lying to them.
8. Make residual income from your customers by selling back end products. If you don't have any, you could sign up to related affiliate programs.
9. Use a redirect page to boost your sales. People think the long affiliate URLs look unprofessional in e-mail so you could redirect them to a web link.
10. Create an extra income from your web site by charging for consulting. The consulting should be related to your web site's theme.

Trivia
Nutrition dogma says, "Eat your vegetables raw." But a study from the University of Arkansas suggests that cooking carrots can actually boost their nutrient value. Food scientists found that blanched, pureed carrots had 34% more of the antioxidants called phenolics than the raw root. Antioxidants protect the body by neutralizing free radicals; these rogue molecules can damage cells, leading to chonic diseases such as cancer. Heating softens the fibrous root, allowing more phenolics to be released from cell walls.
Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyA Virtual Partner
You don't have to be alone in running your Internet business. If you need more help, get a virtual partner, someone who excels in an area of business that maybe you do not. For instance, I no longer have time to design web sites for people, yet many of my customers want me to write the copy for their site. I have developed virtual partnerships with several very capable designers who take my copy and whip it up into a flashy web page. Customers are delighted with great work that I wouldn't have been able to give them without virtual partners.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Rank Explanation
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=My brother was home on leave from his post in Hawaii. He announced that he had just been promoted to lieutenant commander. We were all pleased with the news, but some of us less knowledgeable about military rankings, especially those of the Navy, asked him to explain what the promotion meant.
After several failed attempts to get us to understand, he sighed and said, "Before, I was Hawkeye Pierce, but now I'm Frank Burns."
Expressions of understanding immediately lit the room.

A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is too far from the stage. He whispers to the usher, "This is a mystery, and I have to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I'll give you a handsome tip."
The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the usher a quarter.
The usher looks at the quarter, leans over and whispers, "The wife did it."

After a recent move, I made up a list of companies, agencies, and services that needed to know my new address and phoned each one to ask for the change to be made.
Everything went smoothly until I called one of my frequent flier accounts. After I explained to the representative what I wanted to do, the woman told me, "I'm sorry; we can't do that over the phone. You will have to fill out our change-of-address form."
"How do I get one of those?" I asked.
"We'd be happy to provide you with one," she said pleasantly. "May I have your new address so that I can mail it to you?"

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherA study was conducted to evaluate the level of rehabilitation in reformed drug abusers.
The first group of people was *forced* to give up their addiction.
The second group of people tried to quit on their own and lasted far longer than the first section, as much as two years longer.
The third group of people replaced their addiction with a new alternative. An alternative that gave them the feelings they were seeking when they first turned to the addiction. An alternative that fulfilled them in some way.
As in any habit, if you provide something to take the place of that habit -- something that fulfills what that habit WAS fulfilling -- change will last much longer, and for some be permanent. An article that will help you is here: http://www.tameyourbrain.com/habitsarewhat.htm
