Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob Osgoodby

Broken Dreams

While the stock market and the economy on the whole are on the rebound, many companies are still struggling and are cutting costs. They have decreased benefits, and even laid off employees. Many of those who lost their jobs, will try their hand at doing business on the Internet.

It seems however, that lately I've been hearing a great deal about the difficulty of doing business online.  Put aside the talk about the hype and the scams.  They existed even before the Internet was commercialized.  There is a whole new crop of the uninitiated who fall for promises of earning millions. Fake email addresses, spam and broken dreams will continue to abound until either legislation forces them to do business ethically, or the well of suckers dries up which is doubtful.

Sounds pretty negative doesn't it. Under other circumstances, it would be enough to put someone off trying to do business on the net. But let's look at the positive side.  I don't know about you, but I've met some pretty fine people on the web.  They are honest, hard working and a pleasure to do business with. While there are a few "bad apples" (and aren't there offline as well), it's amazing how many friendly, helpful people there are out there.

In the early nineties, before the entrepreneurial invasion of the Internet, the only game in town was the proprietary Bulletin Boards such as run by Prodigy and Compuserve. Anyone who "dared" become commercial was summarily banned from the Boards, and "blacklists of offenders" were actually shared between the Board Moderators. But, as commercialism crept in, and the old Bulletin Boards went the way of the dinosaurs, a whole new strategy started to evolve.

People have learned that you don't have to create something new or re-invent the wheel to make money online. You can join an affiliate program to get started with a minimum of capital, and a decent income can be made. But the old saying "there's no such thing as a free lunch" is even truer today, and the scamsters are quick to try to separate you from your money.

If you do find a good opportunity after doing "due diligence" research, you can't just sit back and make big deposits in your bank account. Like any business, it has to be marketed.

Sure, you can advertise online for free, but except for isolated instances, there is a catch.  Forget the FFA (Free For All) sites where you can post a free ad for your business.  They get thousands of submissions hourly, and most only keep the latest hundred or so current, so your ad has a life measured in seconds.

How about the free ads you find in newsletters?  If the newsletter has content and a decent subscriber base, they are a great deal.  However, many times the only subscribers who receive it are those placing the free ads. Once they check to see if their ad is there, they "click away" and don't even see anything else.

While you might not immediately learn how to advertise your business, you quickly learn how not to. Email spamvertising is simply a waste of time and money.  If it is annoying to you, and you are summarily delete them, why waste your money on a similar campaign.

Forget about the "personalized web pages" supplied by the parent company with your name on them. They are over worked, over used, and over tired. Seen one, you've seen them all.

Those who want to do business on the web, and are succeeding, are evolving into a whole new breed of entrepreneurs. They learned from the mistakes that are being made, and have developed a business plan that is working.

So, what is the secret.  It really isn't a secret, and it is as obvious as the nose on your face.  People are not stupid, inexperienced maybe - but not stupid.  Treat them with the same courtesy and respect you would like to receive, and you will be amazed at the results. Advertise in Ezines that have a decent subscriber base, and are geared toward your target market.

Unfortunately, many would be entrepreneurs don't take their business seriously, and will fail.  This is not something you can do when bored, and there is nothing good on TV that night.  If your bottom line is to succeed, you must take your online business seriously, and the returns you receive will be in proportion to the effort you exert, and you won’t experience the agony of “broken dreams.”

In The News

Study Shows Evidence Of Web Addiction

A study conducted by researchers at Stanford University indicates considerable and rising rates of Internet addiction among U.S. users. The study, which asked more than 2,500 people about their Web habits, found that almost 14 percent said it was difficult to be offline for more than a few days.

Eight percent said they use the Internet as a means to escape the real world, and a similar portion admitted to hiding their Web habits from their partners. Researchers said these kinds of behaviors are not unlike those exhibited by people with problems such as alcoholism. According to the study, the profile of a typical user who has problems with Internet addiction is a single, college-educated, white male who spends more than 30 hours per week using the Internet for "non-essential" purposes.

Elias Aboujaoude, one of the researchers in the study, said that it is important to remind ourselves that despite all the benefits of technology, "it creates real problems for a subset of people." Indeed, six percent of the respondents said their addiction had adversely affected their relationships with other people.

Starting Your Own Home Business!
by Terri Seymour

Ok, so you have researched the facts, weighed the pros and cons and have finally decided that a home business is right for you.  But now you need to figure out what type of business you want and how to proceed with starting this business.

There are many types of home businesses but not all of them are right for all people.  You need to ask yourself these questions:  Do I want to start my own business from scratch?  Do I just want to join an MLM and sell for someone else?  Do I want to sell physical products or digital products?  Do I want to do all the work online or offline too?  Do I want help with my business or do I want to go solo?  Do I just want to become an affiliate and sell other people's online products?

MLM/Direct Sales - The company you sell for is in control of how you run your business.  You are paid a commission for sales and usually have to recruit a downline.

Distributorship - You are in control of your own business.  You keep all profits and do not need to recruit a downline.

Digital Products - Selling digital products such as ebooks is done online and there is no need for an inventory, shipping or worrying about damaged goods.

Affiliate Programs - many people make a good online income just by selling other people's products.

Service Provider - This would include such things as virtual assistant, party planner, pet sitter, etc.

These types of businesses can be combined to form one very successful business.  Such as applying for a distributorship and then also offering ebooks on your online store site.

Once you have chosen your business and gotten all your permits, tax numbers, etc, you will need to start marketing your new business.  There are countless ways to do this online and offline.

Offline Marketing

Offline marketing would include: business cards, flyers, attending your community events and networking, attending expos, craft fairs, trade shows, postcards, phone calls, newsletter advertising, door hangers, radio, fundraisers, school functions, catalog distribution, mailing lists, home parties, car magnets, brochures, seminars, yellow pages and more.  Use your creativity to come up with your own unique marketing ideas.

Online Marketing

Marketing strategies online include: link exchanges, search engines, autoresponders, online auctions, email press release, online chats/seminars, ebooks, blogging, tutorials, ad swapping, ezine publishing, article marketing and much more!

To market your home business takes a lot of work, consistency, time and commitment.  Handing out a couple business cards and throwing up a website will not suffice.  Work as many as these marketing ideas as you can.  Find out which ones really work for you and then expand on them.  Then try more!

I want to make sure you understand that you cannot treat your business as a hobby.  If you want a successful business with a full time income, you have to work your business full time.  If you find one of these programs that claim you can make thousands a week for 5 minutes of work, (that actually work) please let me know.  In the meantime, start using some of these ideas and get your business name out there!

Closing a Sale

Closing a sale can sometimes be as easy as simply asking. Other times, it can be much more difficult. When it is time to ask for the order, here are 3 ways to make to close the sale.

Establish a deadline. Sometimes forcing a decision can be good. Some customers are indecisive. Telling them your price or service is only available for a certain amount of time could help you close the deal. If not, at least you are free to move on to other prospects.

Let the prospect know if you plan a price increase. If your company plans to change their pricing, start calling people early to get them to purchase before the increase occurs. Customers and prospects will appreciate the notice.

Discuss the consequences of sitting on a sale. Have the prospect consider what it would cost them not to purchase your product or service.

Closing a sale can be easy if you work these tips into your discussions as naturally as possible.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Danger! Do Not Touch!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The New York transit police were in a dither. A box had been left on the subway platform with this warning printed on it: "Danger! Do Not Touch!"

The bomb squad was called, and everyone was told to stay clear of the box until it could be analyzed. When the Bomb Squad arrived, their robot X-Rayed it and saw nothing dangerous. They then donned safety goggles and gloves, and carefully opened the box.

Inside were 25 signs that read: Danger! Do Not Touch!

On a hot summer day, a farmer and his dog were riding in a wagon pulled by two horses. After riding several miles, one of the horses said, "Whew, sure is hot today."

The farmer, obviously surprised, said aloud, "Wow, I didn't know that horse could talk!"

The dog replied, "Neither did I."

As a new Ensign, I was assigned duty at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, and carpooled to work with a veteran Marine sergeant. One afternoon, I showed him a pair of brown shoes I had purchased to go with my khaki uniform. He examined the leather carefully. "Let me take these home," he said, "and I'll show you a real Marine Corps shine."

The next day I wore my old shoes, expecting to switch them with the ones the sergeant was polishing. From a grocery bag, Sarge pulled out the right shoe, shining like glass. "This is the way a Marine shines a shoe," he said. "Now all you have to do is polish the left one to look like it."

Despite his best sales pitch, a life-insurance salesman was unable to get a couple to sign up for a policy.

"I certainly don't want to frighten you into a decision," he announced, standing up to leave ...

"Please sleep on it tonight, and if you wake up in the morning, let me know what you think."

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Did you know that if you model someone else's physiology, you'll experience new choices of thought, emotion, and action?

Try it. Tape a talk show, like Jay Leno or David Letterman, and mimic the guest stars that you like and admire. Sit as they do, talk as they do, walk as they do. If you like the feeling you get as you mimic them, rewind the tape and do it again and again. Do this preferably late at night, so your body and mind will *sleep* on it. The next morning, see if your body doesn't unconsciously duplicate what you had mimicked last night.
