                 He Never Lived

There was a very cautious man.
                      Who never laughed or played.

He never risked, he never tried.
                        He never sang or prayed.

And then one day he passed away,
                      His insurance was denied.

For since he never really lived,
                      They claimed he never died.

Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob Osgoodby

Yesterday

Learn from the past. Live in the present. Create your future.
 - Lorrin L. Lee

Yesterday was a great day, everything seemed to go just right. The day started with a beautiful sunrise and very comfortable temperatures. I grabbed the dogs’ leash and Mojo and myself went for a long walk on the beach.

When we got home, I checked my email and the person I had just added to my franchising program was going “great guns.” She had her own web site and was attracting new clients at the highest rate ever. She was even bringing new recruits into the program.

My daughter stopped by and we had a nice lunch together. We reminisced about a lot of things, including some of our friends who we hadn’t seen for quite a while. Like magic, or so it seemed, a dear friend who we hadn’t seen for a long time called, and he and his wife were in town for a couple of days. We set up dinner date at my place, and spent a great evening together – a perfect ending to a wonderful day.

This morning it was raining, my cable service was down so we had no TV, no Internet Access and no Telephone, which in my business is like a “death knell.” We all face trying times in our life. I felt that today was going to be one of those days when nothing would go right, and things would be going downhill all day.

I started to get depressed, but then thought about yesterday. But yesterday is gone and will never come back. Starting to feel sorry for myself, I remembered a saying my father said many years ago. “Don’t sweat the petty things.” How right he was. My cable service will be up and running in a short time, so why not use this “quiet time” to plan for tomorrow. Tomorrow is a whole new ball game, and a brand new start. Why not take advantage of today, and do some solid planning.

So many people get discouraged when things don’t go exactly as they hoped for, and give up. People who try to start an online business to supplement their income are a perfect example. Initially they were full of hope and energy and everything seemed to be on track. But when they didn’t immediately reap the benefits of their efforts, they wrote it off as a bad experience.

They were sweating the petty things. If it was a good opportunity when they started, what has changed? If you can’t stand rejection, being in business is not for you. Don’t live in the past. Today’s rejection, is not the end of the world. Rather, try to figure out why your efforts are not working, and plan for tomorrow.

In The News

China Unblocks Wikipedia

Following the recent unblocking of the English-language version of Wikipedia in China, users in the country can now access the Chinese version of the Web site. Chinese officials made no comment about the change, but Andrew Lih, a Chinese-American academic who specializes in Wikipedia, said in his blog that he believes "consensus among the authorities determined the benefits of Wikipedia far outweigh the risks."

China is notorious for blocking content it considers subversive, such as material on democracy or human rights. Paris-based Reporters Without Borders has routinely criticized Internet companies that make concessions to Chinese authorities' demands to censor online content. Those companies, including Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft, have argued that the benefits of having a presence in the country justify the concessions.

Reporters Without Borders said that Wikipedia, which made no changes to its content to satisfy Chinese authorities, has shown that no such compromises are necessary. "The Chinese government is pragmatic," the group said, "and does not want to do without foreign businesses in the Internet sector."

11 Questions You Must Ask When Looking for a Home Based Business
by: AnnaLaura Brown

1. How much is the start up cost? Are there ongoing costs? If so how much? This is especially important if you very low on funds and now days who isn’t? Often a business can cost more to start that what it may appear to begin with. It is also important however, to realize that you have to spend money to make money.

2. What kind of training and support is there? The training and support offered by a company will make a huge difference in your success. Do you have a quality up line with good ethics and leadership skills. Are they dedicated to helping you succeed? If the training materials and company leadership are good, you will grow your business faster and it will be easier.

3. What are the rules for advertising your business? Many businesses have rules regarding how and where you can advertise. In some cases you may have strict limitations and in others you may be able to do more or less whatever you want. In any case, it is very important to know and understand what you can and cannot do. For example, the company names are often copy-writed and therefore you are not free to use them in your advertising without permission.

4. What are your options for promoting and running your business? Are there any restrictions on what you can do? This is important because some companies have restrictions on this and the more restrictions the harder it will be for you to be successful. Also the more options you have for selling your products and or promoting your opportunity the easier it will be and the more money you will make.

5. What is the income potential? Some businesses have more income potential than others and before you invest your time and money into one you should understand how much you could expect to make.

6. How long have they been in business? A brand new company has no track record and it can therefore, be unstable. A company which has already been in business for a few years has the advantages of new opportunity along with stability while an older company already has a lot of reps and customers and it may be more difficult to find your own.

7. What is their Better Business Bureau record? If its perfect then you know you are dealing with a great company. If its less than perfect but it still has a good record then you know it is reliable. If its record is bad then stay away. It is probably a scam.

8. What are their products like? Are they high quality? High quality products will endure and sell better than products of a questionable quality.

9. Is the product consumable? Will people reorder the products? Consumable products offer the business owner more money because people will reorder and buy more. Non consumable products can only be sold once and then you have to go out and find more customers.

10. What are the quotas or ordering requirements? If you are required by the company to buy a large quantity of products on a regular basis then it can be difficult to maintain the business or it can be financially stressful if you need to temporarily stop working your business. The last thing you want is a basement full of unused products.

11. Are the products affordable? The majority of the population must be able to afford your products. The more expensive it is the harder it will be to sell, because less people will be able to afford it.

4 Ways to Start a Sales Letter

Over the years, writers have found that there are certain types of openings in direct mail that are more effective than others. These work just as well for email letters and for web sites.

Here are some of these ideas to keep in mind when you are trying to structure your opening.

1) State the offer. This is so simple many people never think of it. Put the offer right at the top of your page in a headline or bold type. The offer includes the product that is for sale, its price, the terms of the sale, and the guarantee.

2) Announce it! If you have something new, start your letter with this important information. Nothing gets attention and builds excitement like the word NEW. I always put it in all capitals to give it added excitement.

3) Flatter the reader. There is nothing a customer likes more than to feel as though they are set apart from "the crowd". Describe the type of person who would probably be one of your best customers. Tell why the way they feel, work, think, or play is important and deserves attention. Use the word "YOU" as often as you can.

4) Use a provocative quote. Quote a famous person or a customer. The quote should arouse curiosity. It should make the reader want to find out more about your product.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Security
=-=-=-=-=

On a business trip, I approached a security checkpoint at the airport. The National Guard shift was rotating, and a guard, in full uniform, was in line in front of me.

As like everyone else, the soldier was ordered to go through the metal detector. So, as he did so, he handed his M-16 rifle to security personnel along with other items such as handcuffs and a flashlight.

Still, the alarm sounded when he walked through. Further inspection revealed a little Swiss army knife inside one of his pockets.

"Sorry, Sir, but this item is prohibited," security said to the soldier.

Then, taking the knife away, the airport worker handed him back the M-16.

Because I had forgotten the dates for the birthdays and anniversaries of a number of my friends and relatives, I decided to compile a list on the computer and have the dates highlighted on screen when the machine was turned on. I went to a number of computer stores to find a software program that would do the job but had no luck at the first few. I finally found one where the clerk seemed experienced.

"Can you recommend something that will remind me of birthdays and anniversaries?" I asked.

"Have you tried a wife?" he replied.

-----

Doug and Bill were at the racetrack. Doug says, "You know, if you win $600 on a race, the track tells the government."

Bill says, "Well it could be worse."

Doug replies, "What could be worse than telling the government you won $600?"

Bill sighs, "Telling your spouse."

A New York family bought a ranch out West where they intended to raise cattle. Friends came to visit and asked if the ranch had a name.

"Well," said the would-be-cattleman. "I wanted to call it the Bar-J. My wife favored the Suzy-Q. One son liked the Flying-W, and the other son wanted the Lazy-Y. So, we're calling it the Bar-J-Suzy-Q-Flying-W-Lazy-Y Ranch."

"But where are all your cattle?"

"So far, none have survived the branding."

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

You can usually have everything you want if you KNOW what it is that you want, and then you do the same thing others have done to achieve it.

Sounds simple, doesn't it?

It is. If you get rid of your doubts and have faith in yourself to accomplish what you set out to, you can do it. Your subconscious will move you forward or hold you back, depending on how you have programmed -- and continue to program -- it.
