Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob Osgoodby

The Internet Has No Magic

When starting a business, there are many factors which must be considered. If mistakes are made along the way, the business may not flourish.

There are basically three things that those in an online business must do.    First - you must pick your program carefully.  If you get involved with the wrong one, you will not succeed. Just because a program has been around a long time, does not necessarily mean it will work for you. Some of the affiliate programs on the web are played out.

You should also avoid the programs that make money mainly by garnering new recruits. At some point the new recruits will slow down and the program will go the way of most Ponzi or pyramid schemes.

Secondly, you must advertise. A one time or sporadic ad will not get customers. Exposure, Exposure, Exposure gets the customers.  It is a common maxim in advertising that it takes 5 to 7 exposures to an ad to get someone to react.  Your copy must also be geared toward your target market.  It must be well written, makes an offer that gets someone's attention, and allows immediate feedback. If you are consistent in your advertising, experiment with your copy until you start getting responses.  If your ad doesn't pull, change it - couldn't be simpler.

Let's stick with exposure for a minute.  It takes a dedicated person to place their free classified ads on an ongoing basis. Miss a week here and there and you are committing a big mistake. You are not being consistent.

Consistency means that you advertise on a regular basis.  Let's face it - any advertising program must use multiple ways to reach their audience.  Search out those publications which are geared toward your target market, and contract with them on a "long term" basis. Many offer discounts for ongoing ads. When someone sees your ad in different places, they start to pay attention.  Enough exposure and they just may contact you for further information.

Which brings us to the third step in your program.  If you don't use some type of auto-responder, you are simply not serious in your advertising efforts.  The auto-response presents the details to them about your offer.  They not only get your response within minutes, but you get their E-mail address for follow-up purposes.

You can get auto-responders from a number of places, but perhaps the simplest is using the Eudora email client.  If someone sends an email to a specific address, or with a specific subject line, it can automatically file it in a follow up folder and send back a canned response.

The final step is the actual close, and you must have the proper tools.  You must have a way to immediately close the deal and for the prospect the make payment. You can use a number of resources including your own merchant account, online checks or a service such as PayPal.

Advertising on the Internet has no magic.  Unless it is done properly, however the world will NOT beat a path to your door. You must use the same techniques and procedures that you would use in any offline advertising campaign. Those that do will have a successful business.

In The News

A New TV in your Future?

A lot of folks will be shopping today for a new TV in preparation for tomorrows Super Bowl. To help you out, here are a few of the terms you will enacounter, and what they mean.

Cathode-ray tube (CRT). The picture tube inside traditional TV sets.

Digital TV. Any set that can receive a TV signal that's recorded and transmitted much like a computer file. Digital cable TV services offer extra features such as electronic program guides. Eventually, all analog TV signals are expected to be converted to digital.

High-definition multimedia interface (HDMI). A cable that allows the easy transfer of high-quality digital and audio signals between a TV and another device, such as a DVD player.

High-definition television (HDTV). TV sets that have a very clear picture due to the high number of lines of detail on screens. Traditional TVs have 480 lines. HDTVs have more than that, although the exact number varies. Top-of-the-line HDTVs have 1,080.

Liquid-crystal display (LCD). A common technology used to make flat-panel TVs. The other is plasma.

Rear projection. TVs with small internal projectors that project images on the screen. The technologies vary, but include digital-light processing (DLP) and silicon crystal reflective display (SXRD).

Rear-projection TVs typically offer large screens at low cost. But they are often more than a foot thick, vs. a few inches for flat-panel TVs.

Happy Shopping.

Computer Security Tips
by Syd Tash

I'm often asked, "Why do I need the 5 layers of protection (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spyware, custom HOSTS file, Windows update) you always recommend?  I have a great anti-virus program".

Well, there are many threats, such as spyware, malware and worms, that anti-virus programs just are not designed to detect.  So you also need several other programs to safeguard your computer.  And don't depend too much on your Windows operating system to protect you, even if you keep it up to date.

Statistics show that it takes Microsoft about 13 days to fix a flaw or vulnerability in Windows.  So the advantage of 5 separate layers of security is that, even if one is weakened, the others will probably protect your computer.  It's called defense in depth, and it's proved its worth for years.

Trivia

Centuries ago, it was believed that those who wore diamonds were protected from harm. Diamonds were considered lucky charms for the wearer, counteracting the effects of unfortunate astrological events and endowing him or her with charm and the ability to attract others. Plato wrote about diamonds as living beings, embodying celestial spirits.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Goin’ Fishin’
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A fisherman from the city was out fishing on a lake in a small boat. He noticed another man in a small boat open his tackle box and take out a mirror. Being curious the man rowed over and asked, "What is the mirror for?"

"That's my secret way to catch fish," said the other man. "Shine the mirror on the top of the water. The fish notice the spot of sun on the water above and they swim to the surface. Then I just reach down and net them and pull them into the boat."

"Wow! Does that really work?"

"You bet it does."

"Would you be interested in selling that mirror? I'll give you $30 for it."

"Well, okay."

After the money was transferred, the city fisherman asked, "By the way, how many fish have you caught this week?"

"You're the sixth," he said.

The Wisdom of Children

When your dad is mad and asks you, "Do I look stupid?" Don't answer.

Never tell your Mom her diet's not working.

Stay away from prunes.

Don't pull Dad's finger when he tells you to.

Never let your three-year-old brother in the same room as your school assignment.

If you want a kitten, start out by asking for a horse.

Felt-tip markers are not good to use as lipstick.

Don't pick on your sister when she's holding a baseball bat.

When you get a bad grade in school, show it to your Mom when she's on the phone.

-----

I don't think I'll ever have a mother's intuition. My sister left me alone in a restaurant with my 12-month-old nephew. I said, "What do I do if he cries?"

She said, "Give him some vegetables."

It turns out that jalapenos are not his favorite.

-----

Parents are expected to participate in their children's education, and my friends were no exception. They gladly help their fifth-grade son, Andrew, whenever he's stumped.

One day after school, Andrew ran into the house waving a paper in the air. "Hey, Mom, great news! There were only three mistakes on my math homework," he announced.

"You made one, Dad made one and I made one!"

-----

To write with a broken pencil is pointless.

Stupid Signs

"Not dishwasher safe."

-- On a remote control for a TV.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Do you make mistakes?

Instead of thinking about all the mistakes you've made, how about if you figure out the *types* of mistakes you've made? No doubt you'll find there is a pattern. Patterns can be changed. If you find yourself saying, *I always do this!* and it's not what you *always* want to do, change it.

Knowledge is power, but not until it's applied. Use that knowledge to your advantage. Change your *mistake*
pattern. Feel the power!
