Internet Tip of the Week
by Bob Osgoodby

Smoke and Mirrors

As with all businesses, online or off, it takes more than a casual approach to truly make a business work. Many beginning opportunity seekers are misled by the hoopla and marketing pitches.  If anyone is trying to start a business on the Internet, they must approach it as a real business.

The number one priority is to get your own web site, and you should avoid the free ones, which immediately mark you as an amateur.  The price of web space today is extremely affordable, and there are tools available to help put together your own site. With a little experimentation, you can have it up and running quickly.

Build your web site based on your interests, and over the long term it will be much more successful.  It should be filled with useful information and resources. Look for experts in your field to work with you in exchange for exposure. Keep the content of constantly updated, which will encourage repeat visits.

Build a mailing list by having your guests register at the site. This mailing list is a valuable marketing tool, but your efforts here should be low key.  It could take the form of a newsletter geared toward your target market, and include a column that you write - you can have your ad in the author's resource box.  Don't make it a thinly disguised pitch for your product or service, but give good solid information, which will be useful to your readers.

If you are going to be involved with an Affiliate Program, be careful with your selection.  Look for programs that pay well, and have a solid reputation. Most importantly, pick one that you believe in, and use their products or services yourself.

Don't use their affiliate links as your primary web presence. The web site will never get listed in the search engine directories, such as Google!. While the sites supplied by the affiliate program are well designed, many are basically Smoke and Mirrors, aimed at making their affiliates feel they have joined the "big time". The prospects of getting visitors to it are slim, unless it is a direct result of your marketing efforts.

With your own site however, and with a strong informational approach, you stand a good chance of getting a decent ranking with the search engines. Smoke and mirrors may gather a few prospects, but a well thought out approach will provide what is necessary for achieving long term success utilizing affiliate programs.  You may just generate that needed second source of income.

In The News

Astronaut will run Boston Marathon in space

Zooming through low-Earth orbit at 17,500 mph, Suni Williams completes the standard marathon distance every 5.4 seconds.

Williams is registered for next month's Boston Marathon, even though she'll be stuck on the international space station when the rest of the field lines up for the 111th edition of the race. So the U.S. Navy commander will run the equivalent distance on a treadmill — 210 miles above Earth, and tethered to her track by bungee cords so she doesn't float away.

Computer Security Tips
by Syd Tash

People sometimes ask me, even today, why I insist so much on having a full suite of security programs on your computer, and keeping everything up to date.  So today I have a short, cautionary tale for you, showing what can happen if you don’t follow this advice:

This is the story of a computer technician, no less, who removed all the security programs from his computer because he wanted a few examples of spyware for his class presentation.  After 10 minutes, his computer had multiple toolbars and endless pop-up windows.  After 45 minutes, the computer simply crashed.

The next day when he tried to boot up, he found over 100 viruses and several thousand spyware infections.  It took 2 weeks to clean the machine - but he had to reformat his hard drive and reinstall Windows, thus losing any data he had not previously backed up.

Don't let this happen to you.  Keep all your security programs up to date, do your daily scans on a regular schedule, don't open unexpected attachments, avoid phishing scams and public computers, back up important files, and try not to download anything such as screensavers.  Windows already has lots.

Stay alert and use common sense on the Web.  Even the best security programs will not protect you unless you think before you click!

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Obituaries

His four children were gathered around Mr. Staley's deathbed.

As the eighty-year-old man seemed to doze off in a blissful sleep, the children started to discuss the final funeral plans. One wanted to spend a hundred dollars for a coffin, a second thought a plain wooden box would do, and the third was even ready to dump the remains into a paper sack. All agreed there was no reason to spend much money, as their father would never know the difference.

Mr. Staley stirred. Having heard every word, he thought it was time to set the record straight. "Children," he said, "I've never told you this and never wanted to, but I can't go to my final resting place with this burden. My darling children, your mother and I were never married."

His oldest son was aghast. "You mean we're....."

Mr. Staley said, "Yup. And cheap ones too!"

After a long day on the course, the exasperated golfer turned to his caddy and said, "You must be the absolute worst caddy in the world!"

"No, I don't think so," said the caddy. "That would be too much of a coincidence."

Bill and Moe had started with only five hundred dollars between them, but they had built up a computer business with sales in the millions. Their company employed over two hundred people, and the two executives lived like princes.

Almost overnight, things changed. Sales dropped sharply, former customers disappeared, the business failed, and personal debts forced both into bankruptcy. Bill and Moe blamed each other for the troubles, and they parted on unfriendly terms.

Five years later, Bill drove up to a decrepit diner and stopped for a cup of coffee. As he was discreetly wiping some crumbs from the table, a waiter approached. Bill looked up and gasped.

"Moe!" he said, shaking his head. "It's a terrible thing, seeing you working in a place as bad as this."

"Yeah," Moe said with a smirk. "But at least I don't eat here."

The server had to be taken offline on an emergency basis to fix a major problem and restore corrupted data. The group responsible did a wonderful job of minimizing downtime and keeping everyone informed about the progress, reports a technician there.

But once it's all over, one particularly clue-challenged middle manager sends along a request for handling the next crisis. "Any chance we can conduct these activities over the weekends? This was not a good thing to have happen during the standard workweek."

You don't have to explain something you never said.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

The Law of Giving

The best way to keep the flow of giving going smoothly is to decide right now that any time you come into contact with someone, you will give them something. It doesn't have to be anything of monetary value. You could give them your love, attention, affection, or appreciation.

The spiritual value of that has enormous possibilities, but the thing to remember is *what goes around, comes around.*

Enjoy your day!
