Tip of the Day
Many older electrical systems only have a two-conductor
outlet.
Most newer ones have a three-conductor outlet
and the round one
is a ground.
When hooking up your computer, never use a ground
eliminator.
These adapters let you plug a three-pronged adapter
into a two-
conductor outlet. They bypass the ground, however,
making your
computer more susceptible to surges.
If you have two-conductor outlets they may however
be grounded.
Take the plate off an outlet and see if there
are three wires
coming into the outlet box. If there is
a third (bare) wire
connected to the metal box, that is a ground.
It is safe to use
a two-conductor adapter that has a ground wire
(usually green)
sticking out the side. This wire should
have a connector that
looks like the letter "U". Connect this
to the screw that holds
the protector plate on the outlet.
To be completely safe, you should check the "fuse
box" or the
circuit breaker panel for that plug. If
that has a corresponding
ground wire, it is safe to use that type of adapter
with a ground
wire. If in doubt, have someone who is
knowledgeable about
electricity change the outlet.
My house was built in 1837, and while we have
upgraded the
electrical system, I still had some of those
old fashioned
outlets. We got by for a number of years
with the grounded
adapters, but have since changed them.
Using an ungrounded outlet for your computer is
a risk you
shouldn't take, and if there is a power surge
- you will not be a
happy camper.

Today's Highlight in History
On this date in 1923, Firestone Tire and Rubber
Company of Akron,
Ohio, began balloon tire production. The company
had previously
experimented with large-section, thin-walled
tires with small
bead diameters for special purposes, but none
had been put on the
commercial market.
Firestone had become the country's largest producer
of tires when
it received the contract to supply Henry Ford's
Model T's with
tires. The company remained on top of the tire
industry,
challenged for supremacy only by Goodyear. Balloon
tires provided
better handling and a smoother ride for car drivers.
In balloon
tires, an inner tube is fitted inside the tire
and inflated.
Firestone's innovation also ushered in the era
of the flat tire.
People may have had problems with their cars
before 1923, but
none had yet enjoyed the pleasure of standing
by the roadside
watching their hissing tire deflate-along with
their hopes of
arriving on time.

Lawsuits Challenge Anonymous Speech Online
Companies, executives, and others who have been
the subjects
of anonymous criticism online are fighting back
with lawsuits.
Civil liberties advocates and those named in
these lawsuits
claim that the targets of the criticism are trying
to impinge
upon the right to free speech.
"People will stop talking if they worry what they
say will make
them wind up in court," said Lauren Gelman of
the Electronic
Frontier Foundation. However, those who have
found themselves the
targets of anonymous online criticism say the
Internet does not
override traditional libel and slander laws.
It is easy to track down a person who has written
something on
the Internet, and most ISPs do not fight court
subpoenas issued
against their subscribers. For example, after
Yahoo! released the
name of an anonymous Ohio man who had used the
Internet to
criticize his employer, he was fired.
Recent court rulings have fallen somewhere in
the middle on the
issue, and there have not yet been any definitive
rulings.
However, the increase in lawsuits against anonymous
critics has
led to an explosion in sales of software that
uses third-party
servers to keep writers anonymous.
