Today's Highlight in History
On this date in 1775 at about 5 a.m., 700 British
troops, on a
mission to capture Patriot leaders and seize
a Patriot arsenal,
marched into Lexington. They found 77 armed
minutemen under
Captain John Parker waiting for them on the town's
common green.
British Major John Pitcairn ordered the outnumbered
Patriots to
disperse, and after a moment's hesitation the
Americans began to
drift off the green. Suddenly, the "shot heard
around the world"
was fired from an undetermined gun, and a cloud
of musket smoke
soon covered the green.
When the brief Battle of Lexington ended, eight
Americans lay
dead or dying and 10 others were wounded. Only
one British
soldier was injured, but the American Revolution
had begun.

Bill To Permit Gambling Sites
On Internet Pushed In Nevada
The Nevada Assembly's Judiciary Committee has
unanimously
passed legislation that would legalize online
gambling in Nevada.
The full Assembly may vote upon the bill as soon
as this week.
Should the bill receive the Assembly's approval,
it would move to
the state Senate. Gov. Kenny Guinn (R) has not
yet decided
whether he will sign the bill if it reaches his
desk, according
to a spokesman for the governor. Just a few years
ago such a bill
would have faced significant opposition from
the gambling
industry.
However, this bill has both industry and political
support. The
bill calls for the Nevada Gaming Control Board
and Nevada Gaming
Commission to craft a legal framework that would
permit online
gambling to flourish without breaking federal
law, including laws
regarding age authentication.

Hesperidin Stops Bleeding Gums
Bioflavonoids are naturally occurring nutrients
usually found in
association with Vitamin C. They are essential
for the absorption
and processing of Vitamin C within the human
body. Present in the
white pulp of citrus fruits, bioflavonoids are
also found in
plums, blackberries, blackcurrants, apricots,
buckwheat,
cherries, cranberries and rose hips. Bioflavonoids
have been
recognized as protectors of capillaries, the
tiniest blood
vessels in the body.
Hesperidin is one of the bioflavonoid compounds
found in oranges,
lemons and grapefruits. Hesperidin deficiency,
in particular, has
been linked with abnormal capillary leakiness
(as well as other
ailments). It helps repair sensitive gums that
may bleed when
brushing teeth, for example.
Bioflavonoids were first identified by Dr. Albert
Szent-Gyorgi,
the "father" of biochemistry, who was awarded
the 1937 Nobel
Prize in Medicine for isolating Vitamin C. In
the process of
treating an associate who suffered from bleeding
gums, Dr. Szent-
Gyorgi's thought was that his patient had a Vitamin
C deficiency.
He gave him raw, unprocessed Vitamin C, and it
rapidly cleared up
the bleeding gums.
Later, a similar patient was treated with a pure
solution of
vitamin C, and Dr. Szent-Gyorgi expected quicker
success, but
instead, the pure solution had no effect. He
then tried the
unprocessed solution, with good results as before.
This success
led Dr. Szent-Gyorgi to discover bioflavonoids.
He tried these by
themselves and reported that they worked. He
dubbed them "Vitamin
P" because of their ability to easily permeate
cells.
