Today's Highlight in History
On this date in 1904, Byron J. Carter received
a U.S. patent for
his "friction-drive" mechanism. The friction-drive
replaced the
conventional transmission to provide more precise
control of a
car's speed. A newspaper at the time of the device's
release
explained that the friction-drive mechanism "used
friction discs,
instead of gears, so arranged as to be instantly
changed to any
desired speed.
The discs also change to forward or backward movement,
and can be
used as a brake to stop the machine by reversing
the lever."
Carter's friction drive never really caught on,
however.
Conventional transmissions served their purpose
adequately, and
the friction discs proved to be susceptible to
poor road
conditions.
Carter's ingenious design did, however, attract
the attention of
William Durant, General Motor's megalomaniac
expansionist leader.
He bought the Cartercar design thinking it might
turn into
something big; it never did. The technology involved
in the
friction-drive is, however, related to today's
disc brakes.

University Sues Adult Web Site
The University of North Carolina (UNC) has filed
a suit claiming
that the Web site uncgirls.com is in violation
of federal
trademark laws. An archived version of the site
displayed a
picture of the campus, Chapel Hill street signs,
and pictures of
partially naked women.
The suit claims that the use of "UNC" in the name,
as well as the
lettering and the colors used, imply a connection
with the
university and are therefore misleading. Jack
Erickson, named in
the suit, denies responsibility, claiming that
the Web site was
turned over to another Web designer. UNC wants
the domain name
and $100,000 in damages.
The Big East athletic conference won a similar
case earlier this
year when the owner of bigeast.com handed over
the URL to the
conference.
