Tip of the Day
When purchasing monitors, if your primary consideration
is a
monitor's actual display size, be careful unless
you are buying
an LCD flat-screen monitor. Most other monitors
are advertised as
15" or 17", but they really do not have that
size of a display!
As with TVs, the length diagonally from the monitor's
top-left
corner to its bottom-right corner determines
a monitor's size.
Monitors, however, normally show borders around
their display
areas. Thus, a 17" monitor may have a small border
around its
display area, making the true display size on
the monitor 16" or
even less.
My problem was the space it had to fit in on my
desk. A 17"
flat-screen is perfect for me. When you
install the monitor,
make sure you don't have to tilt your head to
view it.

Today's Highlight in History
On this day in 1942, Japanese soldiers occupied
the American
islands of Attu and Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands
off Alaska, as
the Axis power continued to expand its defensive
perimeter.
Having been defeated at the battle of Midway--stopped
by the
United States from even landing on the Midway
Islands--the
Japanese nevertheless proved successful in their
invasion of the
Aleutians, which had been American territory
since purchased from
Russia in 1867. Killing 25 American troops upon
landing in Attu,
the Japanese proceeded to relocate and intern
the inhabitants, as
well as those at Kiska.
America would finally invade and recapture the
Aleutians one year
later-killing most of the 2,300 Japanese troops
defending it--in
three weeks of fighting.

Gambling On Internet Wins A Vote
The state of Nevada has passed legislation that
sets the wheels
in motion for the legalization of online gambling.
The bill was
passed by the Nevada legislature at the last
possible moment
despite significant resistance from several state
senators who
said the legislation unfairly benefits the behemoths
of the
casino industry.
Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn favors the introduction
of online
gambling but will examine the bill before deciding
whether to
sign the legislation into law, a spokesperson
said. If the bill
does become law, the casino industry still faces
an uphill battle
to establish online gambling operations because
terms of the
federal Wire Act are unclear on the legality
of Internet gambling
and would likely need clarification from the
courts.
The casino industry also must prove it is capable
of keeping
minors from accessing gambling sites, along with
residents of
states that outlaw gambling.

An intrepid photographer went to a haunted castle
determined to
get a picture of a ghost which was said to appear
only once in a
hundred years. Not wanting to frighten off the
ghost, the
photographer sat in the dark until midnight when
the apparition
became visible.

There IS a difference between natural fluoride
contained in
plants and ground water and the sodium or calcium
fluoride that
is added separately to water supplies and to
toothpastes. One is
