Follow up on the Baby Bird

Thought it might be time for an update. The bird that had fallen
out of its nest that we took it in and cared for, is doing very
well. “Baby” as we call her is about 4 months old now, has found
other Starlings in our area, and has pretty much reverted to the
wild.

While we have a bird feeder in the yard, she primarily eats
insects and other pests. We have set up a feeding station on the
back porch for her, and in addition to what she captures on her
own, we provide her cutworms which we buy over the Internet.

She is highly territorial and chases other birds from her feeding
station if she is in the area. While she doesn’t land on us
anymore, she does allow us to get very close to her, and visits
three or four times a day to “chow down” and take a bath in our
fountain. When she visits she keeps up a non-stop chatter, almost
as if she is telling us what she is doing.

We have quite a few birds that “winter over” with us as we do
provide food and water for them all year long.  I imagine that as
long as we also provide food for Baby, she will stay as well.

                          Tip of the Day

Warm Boot

Every once in awhile, your computer will act up and not function
properly.  Restarting your computer will normally solve most
problems.

A "Warm Boot" is when you simply restart your computer without
actually turning it off. While this will clear up many "Windows"
problems, it does not actually reset all the components in your
system.  If this doesn’t resolve your problem, it may be
necessary to actually shut down your computer and turn it off.

This process is called a "Cold Boot" and forces all components in
your system to reset. Be sure to wait at least 30 seconds, before
restarting your system.  If you have cable access, you may also
wish to turn off your modem as well.

After completing any upgrade or update to your system, even
if it is not required, always perform a “cold boot”. This is the
best way to make sure that the changes you made are going to
work.

                   Today's Highlight in History

First Barrel Ride Down Niagara Falls

On this date in 1901,  daredevil Annie Edson Taylor initiated a
famous stunt tradition when she went over Niagara Falls in a
wooden barrel. Taylor, who performed the feat on her birthday,
went over the 175-foot-tall Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side
of Niagara inside a barrel five feet high and three feet in
diameter. A leather harness and cushions lined the barrel to
protect Taylor during her fall, and she emerged shaken but unhurt
in the river below.

Taylor hoped that after the stunt she could make a fortune
touring the world, displaying the famous barrel and relating the
adventure. Although the stunt did receive international
attention, Taylor reaped few financial rewards and died in
poverty after 20 years as a Niagara street vendor.

Food For Thought By Dr. Kevin Nunley

Advertising Ideas

The most difficult part of advertising is often just coming up
with the idea.   Even the most successful writers can get stuck
at times. Here are some ways to produce advertising ideas that
SELL!

First of all, it is important to get the facts.  You need to know
specific facts about the product as well as facts about the
audience you want to target.  Get all of the information you can!
Read magazines, flyers, newsletters, and even junk mail.  Also,
talk with people.  Go to classes and seminars or attend meetings.
You never know when the information you learn will be useful.

Try using a checklist.  When you're stuck for an idea, a
checklist can help you come up with different possibilities or
strategies. You could make a checklist for headlines, or a
checklist for why people buy products. This will help you get
headed in the right direction.

Get feedback.  The way you see your ideas may be completely
different than the way others see them.  Show your rough ideas to
others. Or, have someone look at your finished copy and give you
their opinion on how it might be improved.

Try teaming up.  If you are a copywriter, you could team up with
an art director.  Or if you are an entrepreneur you might team up
with a corporate manager.  A partner can expand upon your ideas
and could make them even better.

Sleep on it! Sometimes you need to just put the problem aside.
You're probably thinking about it way too much.  You might be
surprised when the perfect idea comes to you "out of the blue."

                             Flivver
                        By Tommy Sessions

Hi, Tommy.

I had two new tires put on the front of my Toyota Camry the
other day.  They told me I had to have the front end aligned.  I
guess they convinced me, I let them do it.  They charged me
extra for it.  Now I'm wondering if it really needed it or was
that just a sales pitch to get some more money.  What is your
opinion on this?  Thank you for writing the Flivver column.
Barb, OK USA

-----

Hello Barb, from OK USA !

No, this was not just a sales pitch to get more money. You didn't
say what condition the old tires were in...I mean, were they
wearing on the sides or just getting slick?

You really should have the front suspension aligned at least
once a year no matter what shape your front tires are in.

Just say the old tires were beginning to wear on the inside
treads just a little. If you don't have the front end aligned,
the new tires will start wearing there also. The price of a front
end alignment is far less than a new set oftires every six
months. :-)

On some vehicles they need to align the rear of your vehicle,
also.  That not only saves the tires, but helps with the handling
of the vehicle.

You have no way of knowing when your vehicle's toe-in/out
gets out of alignment until you see the 'wear-marks' on the
tires...it's too late to save the tires then.

You did the right thing by letting them align it after putting
the new tires on.

Did this help?

If you are having problems with your vehicle just email me with
the problem.  If I don't know the answer, I'll find someone who
does and get back to you.

Thanks:

Parish Repairs
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Because our former small-town parish was not a wealthy one, our
pastor was dependent on parishioners for upkeep and maintenance
of  the church.

Once he asked my husband, Sam, to rewire the confessionals. The
only way to reach the wiring was to enter the attic above the
altar and crawl over the ceiling by balancing on the rafters.
Concerned for my husband's safety, I waited in a pew.

Unbeknownst to me, some parishioners were congregating in the
vestibule. They paid little attention to me, probably assuming I
was praying.

Worried about my husband, I looked up toward the ceiling and
yelled, "Sam, Sam -- are you up there? Did you make it okay?"

There was quite an outburst from the vestibule when Sam's hearty
voice echoed down, "Yes, I made it up here just fine!"

Three cowboys were hanging out in the bunkhouse.  "I know that

about that new foreign car he bought as soon as he gets back."

"Not Tex," said the second.  "He'll always be just a good ol'
boy.  When he walks in, I'm sure all he'll say is hello."

"I know Tex better than any of you," said the third. "He's so
smart, he'll figure out a way to do both.  Here he comes now!"

Tex swung open the bunkhouse door and shouted,

"Audi, partners!"

                      Health Tip of the Week
                       by Dr. Earl Mindell

Are probiotics considered to be drugs?

Probiotics are potentially the miracle cure of the future. They
are good bacteria that are indispensable for good digestive
health. Probiotics are currently considered a food product, but I
wouldn’t be surprised if pharmaceutical companies are researching
the possibility of regulating this supplement as a drug.

Countless clinical studies have proven that probiotics can
prevent and cure many common illnesses, particularly intestinal,
bowel, and bladder infections, GERD, and even colon cancer.

Strict probiotic supplements are “alive” and have a short shelf
life. I suggest that you stick to the refrigerated brands that
contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which promote the growth
of good bacteria. Additionally, I recommend taking them between
meals for optimum effectiveness. You can also look for a balanced
nutritional supplement that contains a probiotic blend to improve
your digestive health.

                 Motivational Tip For The Day
                        by Jan Tincher

Do you enjoy learning?  That's great!

Because your brain grows stagnate when it's not learning, when
it's not challenged.

You are never too old to learn.  If you don't exercise your brain
muscles, it's the same as if you don't exercise your body
muscles.  They deteriorate with disuse.  Believe me on this.

Find something to be enthusiastic about every day, and live a
long healthy life.

=== Factoid Of The Day ===

A wedding custom in early Yorkshire, England, involved a plate
holding wedding cake. It was thrown out of the window as the
bride returned to her parental home after the wedding. If the
plate broke, she would enjoy a happy future with her husband. If
the plate remained intact, her future was bleak.
