Tip of the Day

Wallpaper Color

Do you like to use your own pictures for your computer's desktop wallpaper? You know, as long as you have the picture saved on your computer, you can right click on your desktop, choose Properties, click on the Desktop tab and hit the Browse button to search for it. When you find the one you want, select it and then you just hit OK for the picture to become your wallpaper.

Well, when you do this, you can also choose for the picture to be centered on your screen, stretched out across your whole monitor or tiled. Most people like to have it centered, because the others make the picture look a little distorted sometimes (depending on its size). To center your picture, choose Center under the Position drop down menu. So, once you have the picture centered, what about the rest of your desktop screen?

You might also want to change the background color.  Choose a color that goes well with the colors in the picture. For example, if you have a picture of your favorite football team as your wallpaper, you may want to use one of their team colors for your background.

Today's Highlight in History

Krakatau explodes

On this day in 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurred on Krakatau (also called Krakatoa), a small, uninhabited volcanic island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw five cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.

Krakatau exhibited its first stirrings in more than 200 years on May 20, 1883. A German warship passing by reported a seven-mile high cloud of ash and dust over Krakatau. For the next two months, similar explosions would be witnessed by commercial liners and natives on nearby Java and Sumatra. With little to no idea of the impending catastrophe, the local inhabitants greeted the volcanic activity with festive excitement.

On August 26 and August 27, excitement turned to horror as Krakatau literally blew itself apart, setting off a chain of natural disasters that would be felt around the world for years to come. An enormous blast on the afternoon of August 26 destroyed the northern two-thirds of the island; as it plunged into the Sunda Strait, between the Java Sea and Indian Ocean, the gushing mountain generated a series of pyroclastic flows (fast-moving fluid bodies of molten gas, ash and rock) and monstrous tsunamis that swept over nearby coastlines. Four more eruptions beginning at 5:30 a.m. the following day proved cataclysmic. The explosions could be heard as far as 3,000 miles away, and ash was propelled to a height of 50 miles. Fine dust from the explosion drifted around the earth, causing spectacular sunsets and forming an atmospheric veil that lowered temperatures worldwide by several degrees.

Of the estimated 36,000 deaths resulting from the eruption, at least 31,000 were caused by the tsunamis created when much of the island fell into the water. The greatest of these waves measured 120 feet high, and washed over nearby islands, stripping away vegetation and carrying people out to sea. Another 4,500 people were scorched to death from the pyroclastic flows that rolled over the sea, stretching as far as 40 miles, according to some sources.

In addition to Krakatau, which is still active, Indonesia has another 130 active volcanoes, the most of any country in the world.

Trivia

In the Middle English, the word "minister" meant "lowly person."
It was originally adopted as a term of humility for men of the church.

Quote of the Day

"Anyone can become angry. That is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and in the right way - that is not easy."

Pat – first of all be very careful who you entrust your money to. Many of the “opportunities” out there are thinly disguised scams. A good starting point to find out about online businesses, is at: http://www.entrepreneur.com/

Women in Business

Business And You
by Debbie Solomon

What is the Hottest and Most Achieved Phenomenon going on in the cyberworld today? YOU GOT IT!.....Starting your Own Business!

It is so much easier to start your own business these days. You do not need $1,000's of dollars of overhead just to get started. Most people these days only need a computer with internet access. There are more home businesses starting everyday. The percentage rate is increasing faster
than Gas prices are rising. THAT IS BIG!!!

So, now you realize the concerns so many people are now encountering. With Home businesses increasing so rapidly, how are YOU going to compete with that?  That is Keyword...COMPETE! It is a dog eat dog world out there and everyone is out to get a piece of that American Dream.

How can you beat the competition? Get to know them. Once you have your business plan laid out, your product line in order...the next step is to research your competition. See what they are
doing. Get ideas, write them down. A lot of businesses are giving away FREEBIES. Everyone loves Freebies. Can't go wrong with that.  Look for FREEBIES that NO other competitor has. Look for specials that will enhance your product line. Be DIFFERENT! The main reason you research other competitors is to do exactly the opposite.  Sound strange? The last thing you want to do is to be like your competitors. Why are they going to buy from you when someone else has the same thing?

A Word Of Warning.....Do NOT be a COPYCAT!!! You will notice a lot of competitors with great graphics, great selling strategies and a great site. This does NOT mean you will be able just copy what they do! I see so much of that and it is sad. How will you be DIFFERENT if you do what everyone else is doing? You can have a very common product, add some twists to it and have one of the highest traffic generated sites for that target market.

But where do you come up with these ideas and twists? It is called surfing the NET! You will be amazed of what you can find out there. Here are some example of being DIFFERENT:

**FREE E-Books is Great...but very common.  The Twist....Write Your OWN E-Book. Share your experience.

**Give away FREE Vacations. There are tons of company's that are striving to have businesses
market them on their site in exchange for FREE Vacations.  The Twist....Look for a different kind of Vacation giveaway.  Not only an island giveaway. Look for a unique vacation setting.

**Collect helpful Tools that are related to your product or service and Give them away.
The Twist...Create a Members only site with these tools and offer FREE Access.

**Write your own newsletter. The Twist...ADD Humor!

**Start your own Discussion Forum relating to your product line or service. Offer help!
The Twist....Offer everyone in the forum a FREEBIE just for joining in on the discussion!

Are you getting the idea? All these ideas are very common.  But none of them are your own. Add those twists. It will keep you energized. It will excite your prospects.

Owning a business online or offline can really be boring if you let it. SO DON'T LET IT! Use your imagination.

Your business is YOURS! NO one else's. NO one can tell you what you can and cannot do. Create your dreams!  Have the business you love and most of all just ENJOY IT!

James was almost 29 years old. Most of his friends had already gotten married, and James just bounced from one relationship to the next.

Finally a friend asked him, "What's the matter, are you looking for the perfect woman? Are you THAT particular? Can't you find anyone who suits you?"

"No," James replied. "I meet a lot of nice girls, but as soon as I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them. So I keep on looking!"

"Listen," his friend suggested, "Why don't you find a girl who's just like your dear ole Mother?"

Many weeks passed before James and his friend got together again. "So James. Did you find the perfect girl yet. One that's just like your Mother?"

James shrugged his shoulders, "Yes I found one just like Mom. My mother loved her, they became great friends."

"Excellent!!! So, are you and this girl engaged, yet?"

"I'm afraid not. My Father can't stand her!"

The young lady said to Grandpa, "I noticed that when you sneeze, you put your hand in front of your mouth, are you afraid of spreading germs?"

"Of course not," explained Grandpa. "How else can I catch my teeth???"

"Cooking for the Empty Nest"
Recipe of the Week
by Susan Kemp

Easy meatballs

1 1/2 pound Ground meat (not cheap stuff)
1 can Campbell's Onion Soup (do not dilute)
3/4 cup crushed corn flakes

Mix together well in bowl. Form into 12 meatballs and bake in
muffin pan, ungreased, for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Remove
from oven and scoop out and put in bowl. These are also
excellent with spaghetti sauce. If you need to keep them warm,
use another can of Onion soup heated and poured over the
meatballs. Kids like these because they cannot see peppers or
onions or etc. They are also good with gravy.
