Computer Security Tips

Keep Windows Updated – Carefully!

As you know, one of the essential steps in protecting your computer is to keep the operating system up to date.  If you have a Windows XP or Vista machine, you must keep it current by visiting the Microsoft Windows Update site once a week or so, or by making the updates automatic.

Operating systems previous to XP – such as Win 95, 98 & Me – are no longer supported by Microsoft, and are becoming dangerous to use on today’s Internet.  If you have one of these, try to update to XP or Vista.

On the second Tuesday of every month, Microsoft releases a bunch of patches, or fixes for Windows.  But emergency fixes can be released at any time, which is why you should check regularly.

But it is important to follow the right procedure. First, you must use the Internet Explorer browser for the update, not another one like Firefox.  Next, never follow a link to the Update page from an email; never try to update your computer starting in an email you received, even (or especially) if it seems to have come from Microsoft.  Why?

Because from time to time, the hackers send out floods of spam emails looking almost exactly like the Windows Update page.  If you click these update buttons, you will get a virus or Trojan infection, which can take over your computer and put it at the complete control of the hacker.  In other words, your PC has become part of a botnet.  And remember that Microsoft never sends out such update notices.

So what is a conscientious surfer to do?  Simple. Click Start, Windows Update, or Start, All Programs, Windows Update, and update your machine.  Download and install all critical updates.  The rest, such as drivers or additional features, are optional.

While we are on the subject of updates, the word is Microsoft will release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP in the next little while, possibly this fall. Watch for it.  Service Pack 1 for Vista will probably have to wait till next year.

Email Protocol
by Bob Osgoodby

Anyone who sends large amounts of email, must develop a strategy to ensure its’ successful delivery. You must not only consider who you are sending it to, and how they got on your distribution list, but also the actual content of your articles and their length.

Let’s examine a typical distribution list. Someone fills out a form on a web site and requests to receive the publication. If that is the method, the safest way is to send them an email to which they must respond to, to be included on the list. Another method is to establish a business relationship with someone, at their initiative, in other words they contact you first. You now have the right to communicate with them.

So far, all well and good, however equally important you must be able to remove bad addresses from your distribution lists. What’s a bad address? Simple it doesn’t exist. It may be the result of of several things – it could be poor typing skills - a bored “miscreant’ having fun at your expense, or someone who has let their free email account expire.

Why you might ask, what’s a few bad addresses, when you can simply filter the return notices to your trash. Big Mistake – Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will keep score and actually block your email address. Now you can't send anything to anyone at that ISP. This is all done automatically with their computers without the benefit of human intervention, and is designed to prevent the “harvesting of addresses” off the web. This is a fact of life that must be dealt with in any emailing plan.

The next most important consideration is your content. If you’re writing about the care and nurturing of your flower garden or taking care of your pets, your only consideration is the quality of the information you provide. But if your articles cover Business, Online or Offline, or have anything to do with the Internet or Web Sites, or doing business from your home, it’s a whole different story.

Because of the content, it is almost impossible to provide information without violating some anti-spam filters used by various ISPs. Some ISPs simply delete the email, and neither party is notified that it wasn’t delivered. Others return it as undeliverable and that email address gets removed from the distribution list. Others may "black list" your email address or your ISP. This is all done automatically with their computers without the benefit of human intervention. Is this fair? No - not to legitimate publishers. Does it stop some "spam?" Some, but the professional spammers quickly figure out how to get around their filters, and it really doesn't solve that problem.

How do the ISPs do this? They assign “spam points” to words typically used by spamsters. “Work at Home,” “MLM,” or anything to do with money will quickly stop your email from being delivered. Spam Cop required that legitimate publishers have an “opt out” method in the email, but many ISPs will impose “spam points” for doing that.

Some ISPs will not deliver an email if it exceeds the number or size of emails they allow. This is especially true with the free email addresses such as Yahoo or Hotmail. If for example, you go on vacation and don’t check your email address for a week or so, there is a good chance you will find it has been discontinued when you return.

Email is an important marketing tool for businesses and for communication with friends and loved ones. It is also a source of information that people wish to receive. Much of this legitimate email is being trashed by the ISPs, and not letting anyone know it was trashed. This is not right. At the very least, they should notify the sender and give them the capability of appealing their decision.

How are we attempting to get around this? We send a short note to our subscribers the day the Newsletter is published with the Table of Contents, and a clickable link to the publication. While it doesn’t solve the bad address problems, it should get by all the spam filters used by the ISPs, and those that wish to receive the publication, will.

A Little Humor for the Weekend

Life Insurance
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Mary was discussing the various aspects and possible outcome of the insurance policy with the clerk at the Insurance Agency. During the discussion, she asked. "Suppose I take the life insurance for my husband today for a million dollars, and tomorrow he dies? What will I get?"

The clerk eyed her suspiciously and replied, "Probably a life sentence."

Two kids are talking to each other. One says, "I'm really worried. My dad works twelve hours a day to give me a nice home and good food. My mom spends the whole day cleaning and cooking for me. I'm worried sick!"

The other kid says, "What have you got to worry about? Sounds to me like you've got it made!"

The first kid says, "What if they try to escape?"

Judi tried to sell her old car. She was having a lot of problems selling it, because the car had 250,000 miles.
One day, she told her problem to a friend she worked with at a salon. Her friend told her, "There is a possibility to make the car easier to sell, but it's not legal."

"That doesn't matter," replied Judi, "if only I can sell the car."

"Okay," said Judi's friend. "Here is the address of a friend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him I sent you and he will turn the counter in your car back to 50,000 miles.
Then it should not be a problem to sell your car anymore."

The following weekend, Judi made the trip to the mechanic.
Two weeks later the friend asked Judi, "Did you sell your car?"

"No," replied Judi, "why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it!"

A couple of blondes went on vacation in Colorado. they flew to Denver and rented a car to sight see. One of the sights was a bridge that was more than 1,000 feet above the river.

Walking out onto the bridge, they noticed it swaying in the wind. Soon after, a car went past and the wood-plank roadway moved beneath their feet.

"I don't think I want to drive the car across this bridge," one blonde said to the other.

"What are you worried about?" the second replied. "It's a rental.".

Motivational Tip For The Day
by Jan Tincher

Do you know how to make good things come into your life?

Acknowledge the good things that have come into your life already.

Every day, write down three things that you enjoyed that day, no matter how mundane.

Then, write down three things you liked about each of those three things you enjoyed.

Watch as your life changes and suddenly you have more than three good things to acknowledge. Enjoy life! Live life!

Love life! Pass it on.
