Is MS Word Spilling Your Secrets?
by Syd Tash

MS Word is said to be the most popular word processor in the world.  But unless you are careful, it could be revealing all kinds of information behind your back.  You need to pay attention to security with Word, just as you do with your computer.

Say you use Word to create and share documents and projects, or to make submissions on jobs or real estate.  The recipient can see all the changes you made while developing the document, including dates, who wrote it, initial information (such as the price you are willing to pay), and all changes (such as your revised price), and more.  Sometimes this data is necessary for legal or other purposes.  And sometimes not.

Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to largely prevent these problems and subsequent embarrassment if the wrong people see this type of info.  Depending on your version of Word, here are a few things you should do to secure your data:

*Before starting to create the document, turn off the Track Changes tool.  Click Tools, Track Changes.  In earlier versions of Word (2000 & before) click Tools, Track Changes, Highlight Changes and clear the box marked “Track Changes while editing”. Notice that the letters TRK at the bottom of your screen are now greyed out.

*Fast Save speeds things up when you save a document, because it saves only the changes.  But you should turn this feature off, to prevent deleted text from being saved as well.  Click Tools, Options, Save tab and clear the “Allow fast saves” box.  Click OK.

*You might want to remove all personal information from a document before sending it out.  Click Tools, Options, Security tab.  Under Privacy options, click “Remove personal information from file properties on save”, and click OK.  In earlier versions, click Tools, Options, User Information tab, and delete the text in the boxes.  Click OK.

These three simple steps will remove much of your tracks and changes in Word.  Additional data remains, and can be cleaned up with specialized software.  Go here to have a look.  Excel and PowerPoint are equally guilty when it comes to retaining your data; you can clean those programs' files as well at this site.

Enjoy the Benefits
by Bob Osgoodby

Can you make money on the Web? If you listen to the people selling bulk email addresses, you are sure of it. In the cold light of day however, the only people making money from this operation are the people selling the addresses. But the unsuspecting queue up and plop down their hard earned cash only to find that 15 million people really aren't interested in buying their program.

So where are they going wrong? They may not have a product or service that is of interest to anyone, let alone 15 million. But the hucksters who promote this, compare it to a "scatter gun" and say you will "hit" some prospects. "One tenth of one percent", they claim, "could bring you hundreds of thousands of dollars", and this is true if you have something people are willing to buy.

But there is also one thing they neglect to tell you. Do you have any idea how long it would take to email 15 million people?  Most ISPs have limits on the number of emails you can send at one time – usually around 50 or so at a time – let’s be liberal and say 1000 a day. At that rate it would take about 41 years, working 7 days a week. But don’t worry about that – your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will most likely have cancelled your account for spamming in the first week or so. And guess what? When your account is cancelled, if your web site is hosted by them will also go away.

But they say that they will do the mailing for you. You will certainly get a copy of your ad. But did the other 14,999,999 get it? Was it sent at all? You have no way of knowing. If it was, your web site under the best of circumstances, will most likely be black listed.  When a web site is black listed, no one who uses that ISP will be able to send or receive email. How long do you think your ISP will tolerate that?

A cursory examination of the web will reveal numerous programs that consist primarily of people trying to sell something that they got hooked on. Basically they are trying to recover their money by finding other suckers that are just as dumb as they were.

Are there good programs on the web? Sure, but for goodness sake, use some common sense. Just because it is on the web doesn't make it an automatic money generator. You must have a product, service or opportunity that will pass the basic credibility test. If people don't think it is a good deal, they will simply "click away".

But there are people making money - they have found their "niche market". So what is your niche? Is there something that you know a lot about, perhaps a hobby? Can you produce a product that might be of  interest to others?

If you want to make a living on the internet, you must find your niche. One of the things that always frustrates someone who does have a product, is the lack of time to sell it. Why not approach a few people who do have a good product, and offer to have them represent you for a piece of the action? Someone who has an existing "mall" might be a good candidate. Since you will be controlling the delivery of the "goods", it will be pretty hard for them "beat" you out of the money due.

Finding a niche is key on the "net". Those that do, with reasonable advertising, can enjoy the benefits.

A Little Humor for the Weekend

Fairy Tale:
=-=-=-=-=-=

One day, long, long ago, there was this woman who surprisingly, did not whine, nag or complain........

But this was a long time ago.....

and it was for just ONE day.

The End

-----

The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it.

The next day the kids came back and one by one began to tell their stories. There were all the regular type stuff, spilled milk and pennies saved. Then teacher realized, much to her dismay, that only Little Johnny was left.

"Little Johnny do you have a story to share?"

"Yes ma'am. My daddy told a story about my Aunt Karen. She was a pilot in Desert Storm and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory and all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol and a survival knife."

"She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break and then her parachute landed right in the middle of twenty enemy troops. She shot fifteen of them with the gun until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands."

"Good Heavens!" said the horrified teacher.

"What kind of moral did your daddy tell you from this horrible story?"

"Stay away from Aunt Karen when she's drinking."

This fellow had owned this large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back forty which he modified so you could swim in it; had it fixed up nice, picnic tables, horseshoe courts, basketball court, etc.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond as he hadn't been there for a while and look it over. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond.

One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the pond, I only came to feed my alligators."

-----

"Grandma, when you and Grandpa had your first baby, did Grandpa ever handle the middle-of-the-night feeding?"

"No. I always did that."

"That must have been before you had women's liberation."

"No" she replied, "it was before we had baby bottles."

Motivational Tip For The Day
by Jan Tincher

Use it or lose it!

Did you know that courage unused, diminishes? That commitment unexercised, leaves? That passion unexpressed is no longer passion?

Find your courage every day and use it. Watch it grow. Commit to do something every day, and you will find more good things to commit to.

Every day let your passion grow. Never let it diminish. Encourage your passion, and watch as your family, your
profession, your respect for yourself and others, flourishes.

Solution for the riddle

Sal’s mother. (His son-in-law’s mother-in-law was his wife; her mother-in-law was Sal’s mother.)

Doctors can be frustrating. You wait a month-and-a-half for an
appointment, and he says, "I wish you'd come to see me sooner."

That's it for now.
