Tip of the DayInternet Explorer 7
IE 7 has been out for about a year now, and many folks have not yet installed the new version. IE 7 does have a lot of great new features and the main three categories that the IE 7 features land under are "Makes everyday tasks easier," "Dynamic security protection" and "Improved platform and manageability." Those sound pretty good, right? Well, let's check out the rest of the details.
As for making your everyday tasks easier to handle, you'll get a more clean and streamlined interface. In turn, all of that makes the most common browsing tasks on the Web much easier. There is also a search box at the top of the new browser, so you can start searching instantly. Along with those, there's tabbed browsing, a favorites center, available RSS feeds and even a page zoom option. Sounds decent enough, don't you think?!
The next big thing with IE 7 is its security. The new browser comes with high end security features that will help keep your computer safer from spyware and other types of malware. It's also designed to help protect against identity theft on certain Web sites and phishing acts. Just some of the new security options include an Active X Opt-in, a security status bar, a phishing filter, an easier way to delete your browsing history, an address bar protection area, URL handling security, add ons in the disabled mode, etc.
Now, if you ask me, that's a lot of good changes! Check it out and be happy with what you do have! That's really all I can say.

Something to Think About by Jan Tincher
Gossip. It hurts more than you know.
Have you heard the old adage, *Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see?* It's true.
Think back to the times you got in trouble, when you repeated what you heard and it turned out not to be true. When you told someone what you saw, but later realized that what you thought you saw didn't actually happen the way you thought.
Keep the old adage in mind the next time you pass on what you heard or what you think you saw. Gossip. It really does hurt more than you know.

Food for Thought
Reach Isn't Everything in Ezines
In advertising, the number of people who see your ad is called "reach." You might figure the more subscribers an email newsletter reaches, the more results your ad will generate. Not exactly.
Some of the Internet's biggest ezines often don't get very good response. One client told me, "I advertised in a 'zine that goes to 600,000 and didn't get a single reply." On the other hand, some smaller ezines (like this newsletter) always pull well for advertisers.
Why? A lot has to do with how closely people read an ezine. Ezines that consistently provide valuable iformation on a particular popular topic tend to do best. Readers open each issue eagerly expecting helpful or interesting information they can put to work now.
One of the Net's most effective ezines is AIM (and I'm not just saying this because the owners of AIM also publishes my daily tips newsletter). AIM consistently features great articles on Internet business. Their audience reads each article carefully and responds to ads in big numbers.
An ezine that is all or mostly ads won't pull as well for you unless the ads are all focused on a topic that readers want info on. For example, classic car collectors would appreciate an ad sheet filled with ads selling hard-to-find cars

Trivia
We think of salt as a flavor-enhancer, but did you know it's a fire-enhancer too?
According to John J. Fortman, professor of chemistry at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, salt will
make the flames in your fireplace burn a brighter yellow. To get this effect, which can last up to a half-hour, place small newspaper-wrapped packets of salt on the logs before lighting. For green flames, use another household staple, borax. Both salt and borax contain ions, which produce colors when heated.

Repeated emails to her with copies of her ad and her credit card receipt were sent to her but were unanswered. The number she gives in the ad belongs to Global Cash Flow Network. A call to them told the story. Before doing business with this company I recommend that you do a "Google" on Global Cash Network and make up your own mind - Bob

GrinsHalloween
=-=-=-=-=-=A couple was invited to a swanky masked Halloween Party. She got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone.
He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed, and there was no need of his good time being spoiled by not going.
So he took his costume and away he went.
The wife, after sleeping soundly for one hour, awakened without pain, and as it was still early, she decided to go to the party.
In as much as her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him.
She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice chick he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there.
His wife sidled up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new stuff that had just arrived.
She let him go as far as he wished; naturally, since he was her husband.
Finally he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and had a little fun.
Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behavior.
She was sitting up reading when he came in and asked what kind of a time he had.
He said, "Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there."
Then she asked, "Did you dance much?"
He replied, "I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening.
But I'll tell you... the guy I loaned my costume to sure had a real good time!"

The Dollar Stretcher
by Gary ForemanI live in the Midwest and am bracing for the high cost of heating my home this winter. My question is about buying/using a space heater. Is there a way to find out if running an electric space heater would be cheaper than the gas I use to heat the home? Is there a formula for this? How would I figure it out. I've taken all the other precautions such as insulation, furnace tune-up, weather-stripping etc. I figure I can keep the heat turned to about 67 - but a space heater might be good for the family room-kitchen, the area we use the most. Thanks,
Cheryl R.-----
Cheryl appears to be serious about reducing her heating bills. And, she's right. According to the Federal Trade Commission, nearly half of our utility bills goes to heating/air conditioning. So controlling those expenses is worthwhile.
Cheryl can compare heat generated from gas or electric. To get a fair comparison we'll determine the cost to generate 1 million BTU's of heat with both fuels.
A furnace with a seasonal heating efficiency of 80% will use 12.5 therms to produce the million BTU's. MGE (Madison Gas Electric in Madison WI) was charging consumers $1.50 per therm in October, 2005. We'll use them as our example. At a cost of $1.50 per therm heating with gas would cost $18.75 (12.5 therms X $1.50).
An electric heater would consume 293 kilowatt hours to produce the million BTU's. At a cost of $0.11 per kWh (also from MGE) that's $32.58.
So heating with electric is more expensive than natural gas. And, that's usually the case since a lot of electric is generated by burning natural gas.
But, Cheryl's recognized that gas vs. electric is only half of the equation. Could heating a smaller area (kitchen/family room) with a higher cost fuel (electric) be a good idea?
In our example electric generated heat is 70% more expensive than gas generated heat ($32.58 / $18.75). As long as her kitchen/family room area is less than 30% of the cubic footage of her house she'll save money by using the space heater to heat it and turning down the thermostat on the furnace.
Remember that this is just an example. We've made some assumptions. For instance, furnaces are measured based on their AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). It's also known as "seasonal heating efficiency." We chose a furnace rated at 80% efficiency. Cheryl's could be more or less efficient. That would affect how many therms of gas are consumed.
The selection of space heaters will make a difference, too. There are a number of types available.
According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources a radiator-type heater could be best for Cheryl. It works well in a room that gets constant use. And, since the surface area isn't extremely hot, there's less danger of someone (think children) getting burned.
There's also a formula that Cheryl can use to figure the cost of running a space heater. She'll need to know the size of the space heater in watts. Divide that by 1,000 to get kilowatts. So a 1500 watt heater is 1.5 kilowatts.
Multiply the answer by the number of hours per day the heater is in use to determine how many kilowatts are used per day. Suppose that it's running from 8am until 10pm. She'd multiply 1.5 kilowatts by 12 hours and be using 18 kilowatts per day.
Her electric bill will show how much she pays per kilowatt. Let's use our $0.11 rate. The 18 kilowatts per day multiplied by $0.11 costs Cheryl $1.98 per day to run the heater.
Make no mistake, the furnace is the most efficient way to heat the entire house. But, according to the National Association of Home Builders the average home is 2,200 square feet. That's a lot of space to heat.
And, if you'll study your home, most homes do not have someone in every room 24 hours a day. Each family has a pattern of use. One or two rooms might be in use for much of the day. Other rooms rarely are used except for sleep. Cheryl might find that she can lower the thermostat on the furnace to 60 degrees and use space heaters to raise the temperature in occupied areas.
Chances are that a lot of us don't want to go through all the calculations. You really don't need to. If you only have one or two rooms occupied, it will almost certainly be cheaper to keep your thermostat lower and put a space heater in the occupied rooms. Just remember to take the appropriate safety precautions when using space heaters.
