Tip of the DayThe Role of Visual Effects
You might probably think that today, with computers built with really heavy parts, such as 1024 MB RAM or mega power machines, there is no need to worry about the visual status of your Windows XP components. On the other hand though, even if you're using the most professional computer, it's nice to know how much control you have over the way your Windows interacts with the visual effects and how these effects can play a role in slowing down your computer's performance.
Windows XP's visual effects center can be set to three main ways. The first one is when you are sure of your computer's capabilities and want to enjoy the most visual effects by setting the level to the maximum. The second option is when you prefer to have a faster running machine than having visual beauty and the third one is when you want to select something in between. For example, you want to select your own customized visual preferences for your computer.
To change these, begin by pressing Start on your taskbar and opening the Control Panel.
After entering the Control Panel, select the System icon. (You must be in the classic Control Panel view for this). When the System Properties window pops up, please select the Advanced tab.
As you can see, since we are now concerned with Windows' performance, continue with exploring the Performance section by pressing the Settings button. The Performance Options window will appear and as the name applies, this is the exact place we were just talking about. You are provided with many options in defining the way the items, files and folders are shown on your screen while dealing with them. If not already opened, please select the first tab of Visual Effects. As you can see, there are four main options available and a list of several checkboxes present in a small window.
By default, Windows automatically selects the first option, meaning that it has full control and is free to select the way visual effects and elements are applied to your computer's settings.
The second option is for folks with powerful computers and the ones wanting to enjoy the maximum visual beauty of the icons and items of their computers. When you select this option, all the option checkboxes are automatically selected.
The third option injects a sort of speed to your computer's performance by deselecting all the option checkboxes. Please note that by selecting the third option, you might experience a little bit of an "uglier" working environment, because your files and folders will not be displayed that much.
Finally, the fourth option allows you to select the options the way you like and prefer. In fact, it's a sort of personalizing your overall computer's visual behavior.
This is the part of your Windows XP that is related to the way of displaying your computer's items and you now know that in addition to boosting your computer's RAM and CPU power physically through the upgrading of your computer's hardware parts, there is a small inner place in your computer that you can access to help speed things up a little.

Something to Think About by Jan Tincher
What is essential to developing lasting relationships?
Kindness and sensitivity. That makes sense, doesn't it?
When you are kind to others, you soon find yourself being sensitive to their needs, their wants. Develop kindness and see what happens.
Look around your life. What goes around, comes around. Now, guess what? People are kind and sensitive to you.
What kind of relationships do you build with kindness and sensitivity? Solid ones. You've attracted the kind of friend that you ARE. Doesn't that feel good?

Food for Thought
Creating a Successful M-L-M Business
There was a time when Multi-Level-Marketing was a dirty word to many people. It conjured up images of uncle Eddy inviting neighbors over for dinner only to hound them mercilessly to join his organization.
The Internet and America's sharp move toward home-based business has changed much of that. Today M-L-M companies have huge operations that rival any of America's large corporations. Members don't have to bug friends and neighbors because they can find plenty of opportunity seekers online.
I've watched the M-L-M industry for years. Lots of people don't make money at it because--surprise--they don't work very hard to make their business a success. On the other hand, I know plenty of folks who worked with determination and were earning six figures within a few years.
Here are some things to consider when setting up your M-L-M business:
1. Consider how much the business will cost you each month. If one opportunity requires you to buy $50 in product each month while another wants you to purchase $200 in product, pick the one you can easily afford month after month.
2. Get into a business that sells consumable products or services. You want customers who use it up and come back for more month after month. Repeat product sales is where the big checks come from.
3. Come up with a marketing routine that keeps you motivated. Talk to people you meet, network online, send out postcards, talk to groups. Find what works best for you, then do it, do it, do it long after anyone else would have given up. In business, being stubborn is an asset.

GrinsWinter Home
=-=-=-=-=-=-=We purchased an old home in northern New York State from an elderly widow. Winter was fast approaching and I was concerned about the house's lack of insulation. "If they could live here all those years, so can we," my husband confidently declared.
One November night, the temperature plunged to below zero and we woke up to find our interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the old lady to ask how they had kept the house warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up.
"For the past 30 years," he muttered, "they've gone to Florida for the winter."

Two farmers where discussing who had the meanest dog. One who had a very mean looking Doberman insisted that his was the meanest and that it could lick any other dog in the county. The second just looked at his mangy old yellow dog and said that he would wager his against any dog in the country.
Well, after some animated discussion they finally decided to let the dogs fight it out. After a very short snarling match the old yellow dog leapt on the Doberman and killed it outright.
The first farmer was aghast. His dog had been beating other dogs for years and had never had more than a small scratch or two. He turned to the other farmer and asked, "What kind of dog did you say yours is?"
The first farmer replied, "Well before he lost his tail, we called him a Mountain Lion!"

There was once a small boy who banged a drum all day and loved every moment of it. He would not be quiet, no matter what anyone else said or did. Various attempts were made to do something about the child.
One person told the boy that he would, if he continued to make so much noise, perforate his eardrums. This reasoning was too advanced for the child, who was neither a scientist nor a scholar.
A second person told him that drum beating was a sacred activity and should be carried out only on special occasions. The third person offered the neighbors plugs for their ears; a fourth gave the boy a book; a fifth gave the neighbors books that described a method of controlling anger through biofeedback; a sixth person gave the boy meditation exercises to make him placid and docile. None of these attempts worked.
Eventually, a wise person came along with an effective motivation. He looked at the situation, handed the child a hammer and chisel, and asked, "I wonder what's inside the drum?"

The Dollar Stretcher
by Gary ForemanThe other day I needed to replace two tires on the family mini-van. I went to a tire place that a friend had recommended and I had used to replace four tires on another one of our cars. They had treated me well the first time and I even told them that's why I was back with the van.
They wrote out the order. I handed over the keys and found a place to sit and read while they did the work. Then an interesting thing happened. One of their guys came over to ask if there was a reason that the tires had such widely varying tire pressures. The reason he was asking was he wanted to upsell me to filling the tires with nitrogen.
Two things about this struck me as odd. Cars are my hobby, so I read a lot about them. Recently, I had read that nitrogen really doesn't do much for the average driver. The vehicle in question was a nine-year-old family minivan. No one could confuse it with a performance car.
Secondly, I had checked the air pressure just one week earlier before my wife took a short trip in the van. I may not be the ultimate mechanic, but I do know how to use a tire gauge. So either my tire gauge was bad, or his gauge was bad, or he was lying to me to upsell the nitrogen.
I'll check my gauge to see if it's correct. Maybe there was nothing going on beyond the normal upsell. And, if that's the case, there's really nothing wrong with that. I'm free to say "no" and that's exactly what I did.
But, it is a reminder of how we're continually exposed to upsells, especially this time of the year when we're buying a lot of electronics. Retailers often make more profits selling extended warrantees than they do selling the item.
So shop carefully. The money you save may be your own!
