We are back in NJ for the holidays to visit family and friends. Shoveled snow yesterday for the first time in three years. It has been rather mild in the past when we were here, but I do understand why we opt for a warmer climate.

Secure and Manage Your Passwords
by Syd Tash
Most everyone who surfs the Net eventually signs up for Web mail and a bunch of other services and programs. That means, of course, a legion of login names and passwords to remember. Coming up with good and secure passwords is a bit of a job that we have discussed before. Remembering them and keeping them safe can be a job and a half!
Let us review what a secure password actually is. It should be six to ten characters in length, including a mix of upper and lower case, punctuation and numbers, if permitted. Here is an example: Pa9!*x5. I avoid zero and one, and the letters o and l and I, to prevent confusion. Do not use your name, phone number, dog’s name, favorite restaurant, nearby landmark, or in fact any recognizable word. Some people use PassWOrd (or the like) as their password. Bad idea.
Of course, the harder your password is to guess, the harder it is to remember, and the more likely you are to find yourself tearing your hair out. So, first of all, let’s go to a site that will generate a set of three random passwords for us. Go here - https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm. You will get a 64 character string suitable for use as a key or passphrase in your wireless router, as well as two 63-character passwords. Take a 6 – 10 character portion of the second or third examples to create a strong password.
Next, go to RoboForm at: http://www.roboform.com/ to find a great password manager. Download and install the free version, which should be sufficient for most users, at least at first. Now when you go to one of your password-protected sites, RoboForm will ask you if you want to save your login info as a Passcard. Say Yes. The next time you go to that site, RoboForm will autofill the login fields for you. So you only have to remember one master password, to launch RoboForm. Make it a good strong one, and keep it hidden and safe.
Obviously, if someone gets this master password, they will have access to your, errr, … everything. So never leave your PC unattended while RoboForm is running.
RoboForm has many other features you can play with. There is a password generator and a secure area for important notes and information. RoboForm2Go can be installed on a memory stick or USB drive, which is great when using public or shared computers. When the USB drive is removed, no trace of RoboForm should remain on the computer. You can even set up one-click procedures to launch your browser, go to a particular login page, fill the ID and password fields and log in. Now that’s my idea of helpful technology.

Realize Your Goals
by Bob Osgoodby
It doesn't matter how great your product is or how wonderful your service, if you don't have customers, all you have is a skill, or a product. People don't go into business normally as a hobby, although a lot of hobbies do turn into a business. The trick however, is to turn it into a positive cash flow to realize your goals. If you're serious about doing business, you must plan for the long run. Successful businesses don't normally just happen. They are the result of long hours of planning, and a great deal of work.
There must also be a "war chest" of funds available until a positive cash flow is achieved. One of the major problems that many encounter when starting up, is that they overextend their financial resources. No matter what your business, or how it is run, you must be able to meet current bills when they come due.
Every business has its peaks and valleys. During the Holiday Season for example, retailers have their peaks. Other businesses may suffer however, but even during the "lean" times they must still meet their monthly obligations.
Some may argue that the economy is what is causing turmoil and business failures. A business that does fail however, most likely has overextended themselves, to the point that their cash inflow wasn't enough to cover their expenses. When their "war chest" was depleted, they were gone. How does this affect the small entrepreneur? Can we learn a lesson from this?
Let's examine a program that the average person can get into. A number of companies were founded that were simply "Ponzies" in disguise. The majority of their cash inflow was the result of signing up new members. When the cash flow from new recruits dried up, so did the investment of those who had joined.
Are there legitimate companies out there - sure and many have a great track record. They don't rely on attracting high priced recruits, but have a legitimate product or service that they offer. If you are going to get involved in one of these companies, that should be a major concern.
So - assuming you found such a company, it is time to investigate the feasibility of you going into business with them. They provide the product or service, and you must set yourself up in business. Here is where the cash flow comes into play.
Can you afford the monthly amount you pay them? Can you afford to promote your relationship with this business without immediate income? If the answer to either question is "no", you'd be well advised to reconsider.
If the answer is "yes", how are you going to promote it? Most companies recommend you exhaust your "warm market" first. Your "warm market" is your circle of family and friends that you might convince to join in with you. Eventually however, you are going to exhaust this market and must start seeking people outside that circle.
One way to attract new people is in the online arena. While this will not replace the "face to face" contact that is necessary, if it is done correctly, it can add a valuable source of additional income.
Many people make the mistake of using a web site supplied by their company. While this can be a valuable tool, it really ties you into their product. If you get your own site, you can use it to highlight your offerings. It is of course necessary to advertise your web site, and ezines and newsletters usually give you the best return on your investment. With a modest investment on your part, you can realize a decent return.
Usually, for less than a few hundred dollars, you can get a web site and advertise in ezines targeted to your potential market. Most people can afford this without counting on their cash intake to cover the expenses. Determine what you can spend out of pocket to make something like this work. Then, as your cash flow improves, expand your advertising to include a broader market.
While this is a modest start, it doesn't put you in the position where you must realize income to make expenses. Above all be patient and realize it will take time and effort to realize your goals.

A Little Humor for the Weekend
Ooops

I was trying to mow the lawn before my husband got home from work, but our electric lawn mower refused to cooperate. It would run fine for a few seconds, then cut off, run again, cut off. Finally, I gave up and waited for my husband.
He had a good laugh when he diagnosed the problem. Instead of plugging in the mower using a three-prong adapter, I'd hooked up the cord through the Christmas-tree light blinker control.
-----
My wife asked me to help wrap Christmas presents this year, but I was watching football and declined to help. She then informed me that if I didn't help, I'd be in big, big trouble, so I helped.
However, she didn't tell me to put tags on them, so I think I may be in trouble anyway.

An American couple was fond of England and of all things richly historic and aged. They decided to retire to London, where they hoped to buy a castle. Though that proved out of their price range, they did find a wonderful house, quite ancient, with a long and noble history.
They found this house during their July vacation. They sold their house in Chicago and in November they crossed 'the pond' to retire.
To their horror, they found that their new home was abysmally cold.
They immediately set about trying to get a central heating system installed. Sadly, they were told by contractor after contractor that, in a house that old, it simply wasn't feasible.
"I was afraid it would come down to this," the husband finally said.
"What, honey?" the wife asked. "We can't have archaic and heat it, too."
-----
When I stopped the bus to pick up Chris for preschool, I noticed an older woman hugging him as he left the house. "Is that your grandmother?" I asked.
"Yes," Chris said. "She's come to visit us for Christmas."
"How nice," I said. "Where does she live?"
"At the airport," Chris replied. "Whenever we want her we just go out there and get her."

Riddle
A bus driver was heading down a street in Colorado. He went right past a stop sign without stopping, he turned left where there was a "no left turn" sign, and he went the wrong way on a one-way street. Then he went on the left side of the road past a cop car. Still - he didn't break any traffic laws. Why not?
Do you know the answer? Scroll down for the solution.
There is no time like the present

Motivational Tip For The Day
by Jan Tincher
How to raise your level of self-acceptance:
Pick a role model, someone you respect and has the same values you do. Then, pattern your life and work after that Person's.
Develop good work habits. Get the job done and get it done in excellence.
Take responsibility for your life. Stand up for yourself. Don't complain and don't explain. *Don't explain unless you are teaching.*
Always speak positively.
Be very aware of your image. If you want respect, continually act like someone who deserves respect.
TIP: If you don't think you can respect yourself today, look back through your life and find something that you did that you can respect yourself for. If there's nothing there -- don't laugh, sometimes there isn't -- then do something you can respect yourself for doing every day. Make a list of things you respect about yourself -- it's OK if you only start off with one -- and add to it daily. The more you respect yourself, the more others will respect you.
Remember, if you haven't done it before, that doesn't mean you can't do it now.
