Tip of the Day

Copying the Links

Have you ever visited a Web site that you just had to share it with someone else? Maybe the site had an awesome picture on it or maybe even a video. Either way, you can manage it so your friend can see the site and it's easy!

First, you can just do a simple copy and paste. Go up to the address bar in your Web browser, highlight the link, right click on it and choose Copy - or if you use the keyboard shortcuts like I do - hit Ctrl and C. Then go to your e-mail program and open up a  new message box. Place your cursor in there, right click again and click on Paste - or Ctrl and V. The Web link will then appear in the e-mail. You can then include the link to the site in addition to your message.. If you want to paste the link in another program (like Word, for instance), just do the same exact thing.

Now, if you are on a site and see a picture you would like to share, right click it and select Copy.
You can then paste it in your email or any other place you wish.

Today's Highlight in History

Commander at Pearl Harbor canned

On this day in 1941, Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel was relieved of his command of the U.S. Pacific Fleet as part of a shake-up of officers in the wake of the Pearl Harbor disaster.

Admiral Kimmel had enjoyed a successful military career, beginning in 1915 as an aide to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He served admirably on battleships in World War I, winning command of several in the interwar period. At the outbreak of World War II, Kimmel had already attained the rank of rear admiral and was commanding the cruiser forces at Pearl Harbor. In January 1941, he was promoted to commander of the Pacific Fleet, replacing James Richardson, who FDR relieved of duty after Richardson objected to basing the fleet at Pearl Harbor.

If Kimmel had a weakness, it was that he was a creature of habit, of routine. He knew only what had been done before, and lacked imagination-and therefore insight-regarding the unprecedented. So, even as word was out that Japan was likely to make a first strike against the United States as the negotiations in Washington floundered, Kimmel took no extraordinary actions at Pearl Harbor. In fact, he believed that a sneak attack was more likely at Wake Island or Midway Island, and requested from Lieutenant General Walter Short, Commander of the Army at Pearl Harbor, extra antiaircraft artillery for support there (none could be spared).

Kimmel's predictability was extremely easy to read by Japanese military observers and made his fleet highly vulnerable. As a result, Kimmel was held accountable, to a certain degree, for the absolute devastation wrought on December 7. Although he had no more reason than anyone else to believe Pearl Harbor was a possible Japanese target, a scapegoat had to be found to appease public outrage. He avoided a probable court-martial when he requested early retirement. When Admiral Kimmel's Story, an "as told to" autobiography, was published in 1955, Kimmel made it plain that he believed FDR sacrificed him-and his career-to take suspicion off himself; Kimmel believed Roosevelt knew Pearl Harbor was going to be bombed, although no evidence has ever been adduced to support his allegation.

Do You Really Need To Buy More Software?
by Cavyl Stewart

It has been estimated that most people only use about 10% of the features included in any given software program. That’s quite a shame not to mention a tremendous waste of both time and money. The good news is there is a “cure” for this software ailment.

What normally happens is a new piece of software is bought and installed. Then the user begins playing with the software until he/she figures out most of what they want to know at that particular moment in time. And the rest of the features? They go uninvestigated and unused.

All of this results in a huge amount of wasted time and money… something no small office/home office needs. Many small business owners have even been known to spend hundreds of dollars on a software program that actually duplicates part or all of a program they already own.

For instance, did you know that Microsoft Word can be used as an email program? Did you know Word can also be used as a Web design program? How about a spreadsheet? Yes, it has some of those abilities, too.

For those small offices that don’t do complicated calculations or who only need limited HTML abilities, buying Microsoft Word (at around $200) beats buying Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Dreamweaver for over $800.

What should you do? Simple! Learn more about the software programs you use. No, I’m not suggesting you read through every mindless user’s guide. What I am suggesting is that you take advantage of the free and paid tutorials online. Spending just an hour to go through a few of them every week can shed a lot of light on the software you already use and save you from potentially having to buy yet another expensive program.

Another example is the contact management software called ACT!. This software does track your business contacts, but it also does much more. It performs as an address book. It includes an email program. It functions as a calendar/appointment log complete with a reminder feature. So, rather than buying a specialized email program and calendar/appointment log, you can just buy ACT! and save about $300.

By unlocking the hidden potential of the software you already have - instead of buying new programs for each, individual feature you need - you can save your small business thousands of dollars.

Before you purchase another piece of software, take some time to use the “help” feature or to browse through some online tutorials. Then make a log of each program you already own and what it has the ability to do. You will likely discover that some of the software you already own is capable of handling the job.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Christmas Tree
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Two goobers went deep into the frozen woods searching for a Christmas tree.

After hours of subzero temperatures and a few close calls with hungry wolves, one goober turned to the other and said,

"I'm chopping down the next tree I see. I don't care whether it's decorated or not!"

At the day-care center where I work, some of the children were telling me about their siblings.

"My brother takes horseback-riding lessons," bragged one.

"My sister takes gymnastics," said another.

Not to be outdone, the youngest piped up, "My sister takes antibiotics!"

Our new office computer system was down as much as it was working. My co-worker Cathy decided to stay late one evening to catch up on the work that had accumulated. On her way home, a police officer stopped her for speeding. "What a perfect end to an awful day!" she exclaimed. "Our computer is up, then down -- up, then down. I stay late to catch up, and now this!"

The officer was unaffected by Cathy's griping and he went to his car to prepare a citation. After what seemed an eternity, he returned with her license and registration. As he handed them to her, he smiled and said, "Our computer is down."

Riddle

A man that had committed a horrible crime was put in a prison. This prison was on an island in the middle of a  large lake. There weren't any boats, cars or vehicles of any kind on the island. Yet the man escaped and made it all the way to shore. How did he escape?

Do you know the answer? If not, look for the solution later in this newsletter.

by Susan Kemp

Tasty macaroni and cheese

12 ounces elbow macaroni
3 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups milk (1 %)
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus additional for serving, if
desired
1 can (15 ounces) crushed tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

In a pasta pot, put 3 quarts water. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook it according to the package directions, until al dente. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, melt the 3 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Stir in the 1/4 cup flour and cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Add the 2 cups milk and bring to a simmer. Cook 3 minutes, or until thickened. Stir in the 1 cup Parmesan cheese, the 1 can crushed tomatoes, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, stir to combine, and simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
