A Message from Bob

Now that the "hoopla" from the Super Bowl is over, we can finally sit back and not be pestered every few minumtes while watching TV. I found the "contest" to pick the best ad ludicrous. If I don't want to be interrupted by ads while watching the game, what makes you think I'm going to sign-on to a web site to watch them again. Duh - wonder what marketing genius came up with that. Well the Patriots gave a new meaning to the word "choke" and "Big Blue" prevailed.

Now, the campaigns can get our full attention. Here a Hillary, there a Hillary, everywhere a Hillary, Hillary.While jokes and cartoons about her have been around for a long time, they are also starting to surface about Obama. This go around ( thank goodness) we don't have to put up with Teresa Heinz Kerry. And then there are the Republicans. At least Mitt Romney had enough sense to put that behind him. And now it looks like the Billionaire mayor of NY may join the ranks as a spoiler - shades of Ross Perot. Well the primaries will soon be behind us but then comes the main event. November 4th can't come around too soon in my book.

In addition to the notification, you can also read the Newsletter directly from your email. If the Newsletter doesn't get through the sp*m filters, at least you will be able to read it on the web. You will receive the Notification and (hopefully) the entire Newsletter in your email. Click below to receive it also directly in your email.

Should You Buy a Refurbished Computer? by Syd Tash

OK, Santa has come and gone, and he did not see fit to leave you a shiny new PC.  How rude.  Oh well, … maybe next year.  Now you may be thinking of your options.  Should you buy a new computer? Or a refurbished model?

Generally, I do not think buying a used computer is a good idea. Often, you are buying someone else’s problems.  A refurbished machine is supposed to be restored to like-new condition, but you have no way to tell if this is really so.  Second-hand laptops can be even more problematic.  Repair costs are usually higher than with desktop models to begin with, because everything is so packed together in a small space, making it harder to work on.  Also, laptops by their nature get moved, bumped and jolted around quite a bit.

Many people buy too much computer for their needs.  If money is tight, look for a new budget machine.  Watch for sales.  Be aware, though, that these low-end computers can be expensive or impossible to upgrade, may have a limited number of ports, etc.  Another possibility to save money is to keep your old monitor and printer, if they still work.  Just buy the new computer itself.  Are you buying for a student?  You might find a juicy discount on a new machine at the campus bookstore, or on the manufacturer’s Web site.  Look online for savings or free upgrade coupons.

Before going for the refurbished unit, here are a few additional points to keep in mind:

1. Shop around and get an idea of the cost of a new, similar computer first.  Then make sure you get a big discount on that used model.  Apple sells refurbished laptops on its site here: http://store.apple.com   Dell and Hewlett-Packard do the same;

2. Make sure you get a written warranty, and read it carefully BEFORE shelling out your cash;

essa3. Check to see if you are getting the manual, other documents and especially the installation CD and the original CDs for the other applications on the computer;

4. Insist on using the computer for perhaps an hour, at least, to do different tasks (unless of course you are buying online).  Surf the Web, check your email, etc.  This will provide you with some assurance that it basically works;

5. Be extra cautious if buying at online auctions.  Check the seller’s reputation carefully.

Refurbished machines are not necessarily of poor quality.  Be patient, be careful, and you can find yourself a good machine that will last for years.

Get One That Will
by Bob Osgoodby

We receive such a tremendous amount of unsolicited commercial  email (sp^m) in our In-Box everyday, we can certainly understand  why some people become "Anti-Spam" crusaders.  Since the majority  is sent with phony return addresses, it is virtually impossible  to track down.  While there are ways to find out where it  originated, it is usually an exercise in futility, as most come  from professional spam houses who own their own servers, and  aren't about to shut themselves down. Most people simply delete  the clutter, or create filters with their email package to  automatically get rid of a lot of it.

Over 80% of all email sent is sp^m and the CAN-SPAM Act, signed  into law by President Bush in December of last year, simply is  not having any positive effect. What a waste of resources and our  time! To add insult to injury most Internet Service Providers  (ISPs), in their sometimes overzealous efforts to protect us from  this, attempt to filter out unsolicited email and wind up  deleting valid email.

There is no such thing as a perfect filter.  If a certain  blocking technique is installed, the sp^mmers quickly find a way  around it.  Face it – this is their business. They will quickly  go out of business if their email is not delivered. But, if  someone sends a legitimate email that happens to trigger one of  the filters of the receiving ISP, it will never be delivered. To  make matters worse, neither party will ever know it wasn’t  delivered, as most ISPs simply dump it into hyperspace.

They do this in two ways.  The receiving ISP either blocks the  Internet Service Provider (IP) address of the sender, or their  actual email address.  If they block the email address, and let’s  assume it’s yours, this means that you can’t send any email to  anyone using that ISP. This is a harsh penalty for an innocent  mistake.

Last year, AOL reported it blocked over 500 billion (Yes that’s a  Billion) email messages, and regularly blocks 75-80% of all  incoming mail. Additionally AOL blocked all CI Host customers' IP  addresses, the numeric addresses that identify a computer user on  the Internet, for almost two weeks until CiHost got a restraining  order against AOL.  What were the consequences of this?  Over  200,00 people (mostly businesses) using CiHost’s Servers could  not communicate with anyone using AOL. It is reported that a  class action suit for loss of business against AOL is being  considered. Is this arbitrary blocking wrong?  You bet your life,  but it is a common practice used by ISPs to block sp^m.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

Never – and that is a very long time – use your primary email  address on the web.  If you frequent chat rooms, bulletin boards  or have ads for your business, do NOT use your primary email  address. These places are where the sp^mmers usually find their  victims.

Before signing up with an ISP, it is a must to determine their  privacy policy.  One of the MAJOR ISPs, who most diligently  blocks spam, actually sells their members email addresses to  sp^mmers, who then have carte blanche to send you their junk.

Keep your primary email address private.  Get some free email  addresses such as Hotmail or Yahoo for your travels throughout the web.  Get another for the publications you wish to receive.  But be careful of some of the free ones - their delivery rate is not always the best. Don’t  think that different user names from AOL will solve this problem, either  as if they block an email address sent to one, it is  automatically blocked for all.

If you sign up to receive a Newsletter and don't get it, or it  suddenly stops arriving, one of the legitimate articles most  likely triggered the Spam Filter of your Internet Service  Provider. Some of the articles discuss actual offers on the web  and may use some of the terms they block.  For example, if an  article is discussing a known scam, it has to refer to some of  the words that they might use to block the actual scam.  Once it  is blocked, you may never get it again.

You can ask your site host to reduce the level of filtering on  your Email, or to never reject something sent through the email  address of the publisher.  Many can do this. If your ISP cannot  or will not honor your request, the solution is simple – get one  that will.

A Little Humor for the Weekend

Gift Disappointment
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The rich aunt was disappointed and said to her nephew, "I'm sorry you don't like your gift. I asked you if you preferred a large check or a small check."

"I know, Auntie," the nephew said contritely, "but I didn't know you were talking about neckties."

During a magazine and newspaper subscription drive, our son Philip, a paperboy, learned about good salesmanship.

His supervisor had instructed the kids to maintain a positive attitude, even when turned down. One potential customer told Philip, "I've got papers and magazines strewn all over the place -- I don't need any more."

Philip's reply? "Well, how about a subscription to Good Housekeeping?"

There was once a man from the city who was visiting a small farm, and during this visit he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a most extraordinary manner. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, and the pig would eat the apples off the tree directly.

The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was satisfied, then he would start again with another pig. The city man watched this activity for some time with great astonishment.

Finally, he could not resist saying to the farmer, "This is the most inefficient method of feeding pigs that I can imagine. Just think of the time that would be saved if you simply shook the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!"

The farmer looked puzzled and replied, "What's time to a pig?"

Motivational Tip For The Day
by Jan Tincher

Do you take responsibility?

Take responsibility for any change you want to make in your life. Condition yourself to take the initiative to succeed in whatever change you want.

Don't use words like: "I know this won't work, but I'll *try* it anyway." Just condition yourself to go ahead and do it!

Reprogram yourself, *condition* yourself, to succeed. Condition that new pattern until it's consistent, then your success will be consistent!
