Tip of the Day

Making a Point

I am referring to a system restore point.and yes, you should make one! I know I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but I've been getting several e-mails about it lately and besides that, it's just a very important topic. I figured now would be a good time to go over it again. So, if you've never done this before, let's do it!

In Windows XP, there is a feature called the System Restore. What it does is revert your computer back to a previous time; back before you made a big mistake on your computer or before somethingt messed a lot of things up. It's like a button that you can push to get your computer back to the way it was beforehand. To do this, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

Now, XP does automatically create restore points for some situations, but it's best to make them yourself also, just in case. Check the button next to "Create a restore point" and click Next. Then you just need to type in a description for your point. It could be anything from an installation to an update and so on. Just use a few common words so you and your computer can recognize it. When you're done, click Create and you'll be all set. The date and time will be added to your restore point, so your computer will have all the information it needs to get your computer back to normal.

Today's Highlight in History

Georgia’s governor escapes imprisonment

On this day in 1776, Georgia’s royal governor, Sir James Wright, escaped from his residence in Savannah to the safety of a waiting British warship, the HMS Scarborough, anchored at the mouth of the Savannah River, and returns to London. Governor Wright had been taken into custody and placed under house arrest nearly a month earlier on January 18, 1776, by Patriots under the command of Major Joseph Habersham of the Provincial Congress.

Parliament had taken control of Georgia from its corporate charter-holders in 1752. Georgia’s founders had hoped to establish a colony of worthy, poor white men able to defend the wealthy slaveholders of South Carolina from the Spanish in Florida. Their vision of an economically viable Southern colony without slaves failed. The trustees legalized slavery and alcohol in a last-ditch effort to save their colony between 1750 and 1752. Wright, who practiced law and held a large plantation in South Carolina, was serving as that colony’s agent in London when he was appointed lieutenant governor in 1760. Upon moving to Georgia, he sold much of his South Carolina property and invested in Georgia. Wright became Georgia’s third royal governor in April 1761.

Wright was the only colonial governor and Georgia the only colony to successfully implement the Stamp Act in 1765. As revolutionary fervor grew elsewhere in the colonies, Georgia remained the most loyal colony, declining to send delegates to the Continental Congress in 1774.

Although briefly removed from power, Wright organized a military action and retook Savannah on December 29, 1778. He then resumed office as royal governor on July 22, 1779, remaining in office until July 11, 1782, when the British abandoned Georgia for good. Wright then moved to London, where he died three years later.

Woman in Business

How to be Successful Working from Home!
by Michele Miller

So, you’re interested in starting a home business?  How can you make it happen?

Many people only dream of working from home and don’t think it’s really possible for them to do so.  Sometimes it’s the fear of failure that holds people back.

I’m here to tell you IT IS possible and you can make money and enjoy working form home, you just have to be willing to try.

First of all, you have to have a business idea. Let’s look at some legitimate home business ideas to begin with; let’s get some ideas going here…

Web design, Graphic design, Internet marketing, Secretarial Service, Medical Transcriptionist, Home Parties, (there’s lots of these around and you can definitely make good money if you stick with them), Pet Sitting, Errand Runner, Copywriter, Real Estate, Photographer, Caterer, Furniture Maker, Candle Making, Wedding Consultant, Computer Tuition, Music Lessons, Insurance Agent.

There’s loads more, but as you can see, it is possible to find something you enjoy that can be a great home business.  You might have to take some classes to begin with if you don’t have a skill.  It depends what you are looking for.

The trick with any home business is to ease your way into one.  Keep your regular job while you “develop” your home business.  Start your business part-time and let it build.  When it reaches the point where you are making enough money, you can quit your regular job.  This way, you won’t be taking risks and depending on a new business to support you right away.

All the above mentioned businesses are relatively low cost start-up businesses.  Forget having to invest hundreds of thousands just to start your own business.  Some of the most successful businesses were started on a shoe-string, or thereabouts…

So now you’ve got some ideas, what else do you need?

You need DISCIPLINE AND MOTIVATION.  That’s as important as your business idea.  You need to be a go-getter kind of person to have your own business.  You need to be willing to get things off the ground yourself, and often willing to work for no financial return at first, or very little financial return.  It helps to have vision; you have to sow the seeds to see the flowers.  Overnight success is quite rare.

You can help yourself stay motivated by making a “to do list”, and “working your business” every day in some small or big way.  It doesn’t really matter as long as you have a “plan” and keep chipping away at it until it happens.

You hear people say all the time that you need to set your goals, well you do, and a “to do list” will enable you to cross off things as you work through them, giving you a feeling of accomplishment as well.

Okay, what else do you need?

CONFIDENCE

As you begin starting your own business, you may come across negative people who will discourage you and make you feel less confident.  You must ignore these people and only let yourself focus on the positive.  One day these people will eat their words.  Try to find people who want the same out of life as you do and mix with them.  If you can, find yourself a mentor in the field you are going in to.  This is a great help.  You will be able to stay motivated about your future goals if you have someone to share them with.  A mentor will also give you insights into your business and hopefully share with you how to avoid certain mistakes along the way.

The last thing you need is FAITH – in yourself.  So go ahead, start a home business – You won’t look back!

A Little Humor to Start the Week

You know you are suffering from "Empty Nest Syndrome" if.....
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

You have thrown out the better part of the last several one-gallon jugs of milk, but still can't bring yourself to buy the one-quart cartons.

You called the power company and asked them to check your meter, because the hot-water bill has been way too low.

You suddenly realize that you no longer need to include video late fees as part of the monthly budget.

You are shocked when you notice you can push the buttons on the car radio and KNOW what station you will get.

The bottle of shampoo has been in the shower so long you are starting to think it might be a mystical experience - kind of a loaves-and-fishes thing.

They've been gone three years and you still cook enough for your husband to have seconds and thirds ... and fourths.

You still walk through the living room in the crouched position with your picking-up hand brushing the floor, even though it encounters no dirty socks.

You ask the mechanic to check why your car is costing so little to run.

Your cupboards overflow with uneaten school lunch treats.

You still hide your best make-up.

A blonde goes out for a walk. She comes to a river and sees another blonde on the opposite bank.

"Yoohoo" she shouts, "how can I get to the other side?"

The second blonde looks up the river then down the river then shouts back,
"You already are on the other side."

-----

A Sunday school teacher asked her children, as they were on the way to church service,
"And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?"

One bright little girl replied,
"Because people are sleeping."

-----

It was the beginning of term at a primary school in Brooklyn. The teacher asked the children their names one at a time, and for each to spell their name out loud.

When she came to a young Pakistani boy and asked his name, he replied, "Ravashanka Vankatarataam Bannerjee."

"How do you spell that?" asked the teacher.

"My mother helps me," said the little boy.

Riddle

You have ten stacks of identical looking gold coins.

Nine of the stacks contain all real gold coins, and one of the stacks is made up entirely of fake gold coins. Each real gold coin weighs exactly 1 gram, while each fake gold coin weighs exactly 1.1 grams. Using a scale, how can you determine the stack of fake coins?

RULES: You can use to take only one measurement. For example, you stack what you want on the scale, press a button, and get a readout of the weight. You can do this only once, and once the readout is displayed it does not change if you remove any coins. You can mix the coins up in their stacks, separate them, mark them, whatever. How do you find out for sure which stack contains the fake gold coins?

Do you know the answer? If not, look for the solution later in this newsletter.

"Cooking for the Empty Nest"
Recipe of the Week
by Susan Kemp

Swiss Creamy Chicken

Chicken Breasts
1 Can Cream of Chicken Soup
1 Cup White Wine
4-5 Slices Swiss Cheese
Stuffing Bread Crumbs (Pepperidge Farm has great seasoned bread
crumbs)
Melted Butter

Spray casserole dish with non-stick spray, lay chicken breasts inside dish. Lay slices of swiss cheese on top of chicken. In a separate bowl, mix white wine and soup together. Pour this mixture of chicken and cheese. Sprinkle bread crumbs on top. Pour melted butter over and bake until chicken is done. I like to add a little more white wine than the recipe calls for so there is more mixture and then serve all over white rice.

Solution for the Riddle

On the scale, place one coin from the first stack, two from the second stack, three from the third stack, and so on up to ten. Press the button to get the readout of the total weight. The number in the decimal place of the scale readout tells you how many of the fake coins are on the scale, and also which of your stacks contained the fake coins.
