Tip of the Day

Scratch on YOUR LCD

If you have an LCD screen for your computer monitor whether it be a laptop or a desktop monitor, they're nice to have, but, unfortunately they can easily be damaged if something happens to hit it just right. The most common thing with LCD screens is a scratch. So, how do you get rid of a scratch?

Now, there are varying views on how to fix a scratch on an LCD screen. This method seems to work for me about the best out of all the other suggestions, but it's possible it won't work for you.

First, clean off the surface of your screen with a soft piece of cloth. Next, the best thing to do (even if it does seem a little weird) is use some petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) to fill in the scratch. The Vaseline's density matches better to the LCD material than anything else, so it will fill in all of the gaps more efficiently. Just rub some on the scratch and then wipe off any excess. Don't press too hard when you're doing that though. You want to make sure some of the Vaseline stays there.

This method seems to work about the best out of all the other suggestions I've tried, but it's possible it won't work for you. Just be very careful and make sure you get enough of the jelly inside the scratch. If you do that, it should work like a charm and the scratch will be gone forever. If it doesn't seem to work for you, you can always use a cloth to clean the Vaseline off the screen. It's at least worth a try, don't you think?!

Today's Highlight in History

Your Show of Shows debuts

Comedy program Your Show of Shows, hosted by Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca, first aired on this day in 1950. Although the show lasted only four seasons, it became a classic of television's golden era, featuring comedy by future stars Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Woody Allen, and others. The program featured 90 minutes of live comedy every week, and the series was one of television's Top 20 hits for three of its four years.

A common misconception is that Woody Allen wrote for Your Show of Shows; he in fact wrote for its successor program, Caesar's Hour, which ran from 1954-1957.

Carl Reiner has stated that the time he spent on Your Show of Shows was the inspiration for The Dick Van Dyke Show; Your Show of Shows also inspired the 1982 film My Favorite Year, produced by Mel Brooks, and the play Laughter on the 23rd Floor written by Neil Simon.

Woman in Business

CONSISTENCY COUNTS
by debbie solomon

What is the definition of consistency?
    1.) agreement; harmony; logical connection
2.) agreement with what has already been done or expressed; conformity with previous practice.

The word conformity is the key. People strive on consistency, and when that is broken, people tend to get confused, and even discouraged. We do not like change, and when a business completely changes its conformity of previous practice, clients will shy away.

Now we are not talking about visual consistency. It is always practical to keep your site fresh and new, with up to date features and specials.  Consistency is the way you practice your professional etiquette.

Here are some example of what needs to maintain its consistency:

1.) If you publish a newsletter or ezine, and the publication is issued on a certain day of the week, or time of the month, make sure you always publish when you say you will. People expect to see it and if they don't, it shows that you lack consistency, and if you lack in this area, what other areas do you lack in?

2.) If you do follow ups once a week, make sure you keep it at once a week. Not twice a week, or once every other week. If you are too busy to keep to that kind of schedule then you are too busy to perform a professional business.

3.) If you answer your mail every day, make sure you do it every day.  People will email you with a question and expect an answer within a certain time period. If you do not answer with in that time period that you normally answer your mail, people will get discouraged, and walk away. They will think you don't care.  If for some reason you cannot get to your mail (on vacation, etc...) Make sure you let people know. Send out a mailing or turn on an autoresponder letting people know when you will get back to them.

4.) If you promise to ship a product within a certain amount of time, and people know to expect it in that time frame, make sure you process that order and get it out when promised. If you don't, you will lose any future purchases from that person.

5.) We all make mistakes. It is human nature. No one is perfect. If you do make a mistake, overlook an important order, or call-back, Be honest, and let the individual know that you did make a mistake. People tend to respect you more if you admit to a mistake and do
everything you can to accommodate the person due to any inconvenience. Covering up and making excuses just makes you look bad. Do you honestly think that people cannot see through lies? It is the most transparent act, and it won't work.

Consistency in a business is probably the most valuable asset you can have. Once that is broken, the chance your business will go on a steady decline is very probable.

If your business practices maintains its consistency, you will gain respect, build a professional reputation for your business, and you can grow as a person, knowing that you always maintain your business etiquette by always being consistent with your practices.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Feeling Old?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

About 15 years ago, my brother and I were shopping in a record store in the downtown plaza. He was trying to find music recordings related to the concert known as "Woodstock" from the 1960's. The teen-aged clerk asked if she could be of assistance.

"Yes, I'm trying to find recordings of Woodstock," he explained.

The young lady looked very puzzled and I knew she had no clue, but I had no idea how badly she had no clue until she spoke...

"Woodstock? You mean Snoopy's little buddy?"

-----

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and more piercings than they wanted to count.

Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."

"Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

-----

My wife and I run a small restaurant where we often name our specials after our employees. Dishes like: "Chicken Mickey," after our dishwasher who gave us the recipe, and "Rod's Ribs," after a waiter who had his personal style of barbecue.

One evening after rereading the menu, I broke with this tradition and changed the description of the special we had named after our chef. Despite her skills and excellent reputation, somehow I didn't think an entree named: "Salmon Ella" would go over big with our customers.
