Tip of the Day

Emailing a Picture

Just yesterday, I had a phone call from someone who wanted to send me a picture she had taken with her digital camera.  While the answer is  basically simplistic, if someone has never done it, it can be a challenge.

Now doing this on the phone, I had her go to "Windows Explorer" and,  find the image she wanted to send.. Now that was the easy part.  When we went to attach it to her email, I told her what to do, and to select the file she had just saved. Try as she might, she couldn’t find the file.

OK – back to "Windows Exploer".  This time I had her write down the directory and file name she was saving. Back to the email and it went without a  hitch.

Unless you do something all the time, it is best to have paper and pencil available when doing something new. That way you don’t have to trust  your memory, when you are 5 or 6 steps away from what you did.

Today's Highlight in History

Lincoln is shot

On this date in 1865, John Wilkes Booth shots President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford's Theater in Washington.

Five days earlier, Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered his army to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The war was nearly over, although there were still Confederate forces yet to surrender. The president had recently visited the captured Rebel capital of Richmond, and now Lincoln sought a relaxing evening by attending a production of Our American Cousin starring Laura Keene. Ford's Theater, seven blocks from the White House, was crammed with people trying to catch a glimpse of Grant, who was rumored to be in attendance. The general and his wife had cancelled abruptly for an out-of-town trip.

Lincoln occupied a booth above the stage with his wife; Henry Rathbone, a young army officer; and his fiancýe, Clara Harris, daughter of New York Senator Ira Harris. The Lincolns arrived late for the comedy, but the president was in a fine mood and laughed heartily during the production. At 10:15, Booth slipped into the box and fired his .44-caliber single-shot derringer into the back of Lincoln's head. Rathbone rushed Booth, who stabbed the soldier in the shoulder. Booth then leapt from the president's box to the stage below, breaking his leg as he landed. He shouted, "Sic semper tyrannis!" ("Thus ever to tyrants!"--the Virginia state motto) and ran from the stage. There was a pause, as the crowd initially thought the unfolding drama was part of the production, but a scream from Mrs. Lincoln told them otherwise. The stricken president was carried from the box to a house across the street, where he died the following morning.

Booth was one of the most famous actors of his day, and Lincoln had seen him perform. He was a Maryland native with southern sympathies who hoped to aid the Confederacy by taking out the Union's political leadership in one night. With Confederate president Jefferson Davis still free and General Joseph Johnston's army still alive in the Carolinas, Booth thought the Confederate cause was not yet lost. He sent George Atzerodt to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson and Lewis Paine to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward. Atzerodt could not muster the courage to carry out his assignment, but Paine burst into Seward's home and stabbed him as lay sick in bed. Although seriously wounded, Seward eventually recovered.

Woman in Business

Top Five Blog Lies Brought to Light by Sarah Paine

Using BlogSpot or Wordpress will bring guaranteed traffic. It is hard to admit when something is just not as easy as one would like it to be and this is just one of those things. Whether you use a free site, a paid site or a blog, traffic does not fly in upon publishing a site. If this were that easy everyone would be an internet millionaire. Traffic building takes time and effort both of which will require plenty of energy.

There are products available for purchase that can allow the blog owner to see income in the thousands every day. Remember what your mother told you...if it sounds too good to be true than it is. It is as simple as that. Anyone that promises you the world in a day is just trying to pry open your wallet. The likelihood of ending up more broke than when you started is imminent. Do not buy into the hype here, there are some great tips and tricks out there however, none work instantly. Save your money and put the work in, it is the only way.

On to the next falsehood, bloggers can outrank other sites simply because their site is a blog. Who does not love a blog? We all do, that is precisely why your are reading this right now. Search engines certainly have love for blogs as well yet, they love distinct content even more. Whether you decide to create a sales site or blog the need to write fresh content and create back links will over power any possible page rank cheat you can think of. Yahoo, Google and Msn think so too which is why their algorithms will gladly rank a website with relevant content higher than any stale blog out there.

The second to last fib is one of the most important to pay attention to as you could be wasting hours of your precious time. Ok here goes, taking one blog post and plastering it into every article directory under the sun will increase your page rank like nothing you have ever imagined. No one wants to read the same thing six hundred times which is why Google is certain to delete every duplicate aside from the original entry it spiders one by one. There are tons of article submitters that take the same article and send it out if you pay thirty to one hundred dollars. Save your time and your money and make sure the content that is sent is unique.

The grand finale is taking advantage of blogs assists in avoiding auto responder subscriptions that cost money. Sure you can do without email marketing if you do not mind throwing cash into the wind. It is extremely important that you draw visitors in time and time again. Why? Well put yourself in the shoes of a customer, how many times do you need to come across a product before you buy? If you said once, chances are your are fibbing to yourself. Marketing research points to the fact that the average consumer will need to see the product multiple times before buying. The fact is it doesn't matter what type of site you are running, to boost long term revenue you will need to use an auto responder. Keep each of these ideas in mind to give yourself a reality check and save a few bucks.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Starting To Date
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Alan asks, "I know you're crazy about that little daughter of yours, Steve. What are you going to do when she starts to date?"

Steve says, "I figure I'll take the first young man aside, put my arm around his shoulder, and pull him close to me so that only he can hear. Then I'll say, "Do you see that sweet, little young lady? She's my only daughter, and I love her very much. If you were thinking about touching, kissing, or being physically affectionate to her in any way ............ just remember ............... I don't mind going back to prison."

I was in New York's Grand Central Terminal on my way to visit friends in Connecticut. I had never taken the trip before and was wondering if I needed to switch trains in Stamford.

Walking to the train, I saw the conductor and asked, "Do I need to change?"

"No," he replied immediately. "You're fine the way you are. Your bag matches your shoes and your earrings are the same color as your outfit. Very coordinated."

We used to play spin the bottle when I was a kid. A girl would spin the bottle and if it pointed to you when it stopped, the girl could either kiss you or give you a dime.

Riddle

Janie’s friends were chipping in to buy her a wedding shower present. At first, 10 friends chipped in, but 2 of them dropped out. Each of the 8 had to chip in another dollar to bring the amount back up. How much money did they plan to collect?

Do you know the answer? If not, look for the solution later in this newsletter.

"Cooking for the Empty Nest"
Recipe of the Week
by Susan Kemp

Boiled Peanuts

Boiled peanuts are a traditional snack in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, northern Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. Pronounced "bald peanuts" by diehard Southerners. They are an acquired taste, but according to southerners, they are totally addictive.

Judging from the many variations on recipes for boiled peanuts, there appears to be no wrong way to boil green peanuts. The important thing is the many tastings needed to determine when they are done. You must taste test the boiled peanuts for saltiness and firmness, as some people prefer soft nuts to firmer ones.

4 to 5 pounds green (raw) peanuts in shell
4 to 6 quarts water
1 cup plain salt

Wash unshelled peanuts thoroughly in cold water until water runs clear; then soak in cool, clean water for approximately 30 minutes before cooking.

In a large pot, place soaked peanuts and cover completely with water. Add 1 cup of salt per gallon of water. Cook, covered, on high heat for 4 to 7 hours.

NOTE: the cooking time of boiled peanuts varies according to the maturity of the peanuts used and the variety of peanuts. The cooking time for a 'freshly pulled" or green peanut is shorter than for a peanut that has been stored for a time.

Boil the peanuts for about 4 hours, then taste. Taste again i 10 minutes, both for salt and texture. Keep cooking and tasting until the peanuts reach desired texture (when fully cooked, the texture of the peanut should be similar to that of a cooked dry pea or bean).

Remove from heat and drain peanuts after cooking or they will absorb salt and become over salted.

Peanuts may be eaten hot or at room temperature, or chilled in the refrigerator and eaten cold, shelling as you eat them.

Freezing boiled peanuts:
Prepare peanuts as indicated above. Drain, allow to cool, and freeze in airtight containers. They keep indefinitely.
