Cloudeight Smileycons
If you've used Cloudeight Stationery before, you've probably heard about their Smileycons, right? Well, lucky for all of us, Cloudeight recently released a free version of their popular emoticon program. In case you're not sure what Smileycons even are, allow me to explain. The best way I can think of to describe them is "suped up emoticons!" Cloudeight has definitely pushed to their limit this time, offering hundreds of smileys in all shapes and sizes, different colors, different seasons, an array of themes and so much more. You can see a sampling of them in the screenshot below.
You can use Smileycons for your e-mail stationery needs, in instant messenger programs, in message board forums and basically, anywhere else you can think of. It's pretty much known that Cloudeight has the nicest smileycons on the Web today and best of all, they're free, they don't include any adware or spyware and they are all Vista compatible as well. It just doesn't get any better than that. You can check them all out for yourself by downloading them right here. http://smileycons.com/

Today's Highlight in History
Red Baron killed in action
On this date in 1918, in the skies over Vauz sur Somme, France, Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious German flying ace known as "The Red Baron," was killed by Allied fire.
Richthofen, the son of a Prussian nobleman, switched from the German army to the Imperial Air Service in 1915. By 1916, he was terrorizing the skies over the western front in an Albatross biplane, downing 15 enemy planes by the end of the year, including one piloted by British flying ace Major Lanoe Hawker. In 1917, Richthofen surpassed all flying ace records on both sides of the western front and began using a Fokker triplane, painted entirely red in tribute to his old cavalry regiment. Although only used during the last eight months of his career, it is this aircraft that Richthofen was most commonly associated with and it led to an enduring English nickname for the German pilot--the Red Baron.
On April 21, 1918, with 80 victories under his
belt, Richthofen penetrated deep into Allied territory in pursuit of a
British aircraft. The Red Baron was flying too near the ground--an Australian
gunner shot him through his chest, and his plane crashed into a field alongside
the road from Corbie to Bray. Another account has Captain A. Roy Brown,
a Canadian in the Royal Air Force, shooting him down. British troops recovered
his body, and he was buried with full military honors. He was 25 years
old. In a time of wooden and fabric aircraft, when 20 air victories ensured
a pilot legendary status, Manfred von Richthofen downed 80 enemy aircraft
and is regarded to this day as the ace of aces.

Recycling At Your Day Care by Fiona Lohrenz
I have attempted to be as 'green' as possible, both in my personal life and at my child day care, for quite some time now. Before the advent of curbside collection I was dividing my waste and making the fun filled fortnightly trip to the recycling center for offload. It took a bit of effort but I figured it was the least we wasteful, polluting humans could do in an attempt to preserve our environment.
Running a day care has been a great opportunity to try to educate the next generation in environmental awareness. The kids are aware of, and involved in, the daily routines that make up our recycling efforts and that’s in addition to incorporating same into their class lessons. They know what the different bins are for (paper, plastic, glass etc), are aware of our compost heap and how it works and are constantly reminded not to waste water or electricity.
Promoting this awareness in the kids is a lot easier than you might think and can be made into a fun learning game (who knows where paper comes from, which bin does this pot go into?). Children are like little sponges and they are open to new concepts and ideas. Plus they carry this enthusiasm home and can often play a part in changing the mindset of those around them (several parents have told me how they were remprimanded by their preschooler for putting a recyclable object in the garbage). I love it!!
Parents send in lunches for the kids at our center and we encourage them to consider the packaging they use/purchase. We offer information on choosing more environmentally friendly options e.g. buying yogurt in large, cardboard pots instead of the small plastic ones, getting raisins in bulk instead of small cardboard boxes, reusing juice bottles etc. Plus, the kids help make up charts, sticking on pictures of recyclable containers.
A large array of educational toys require batteries for sound and lights etc….a lot of batteries. You can save money and reuse your batteries when you buy a battery recharger. Alternatively, take a trip to your local battery recycler with your stash of old, dead batteries.
We can make a huge difference with a little extra thought and effort and a variety of small changes. As day care operators we have a fantastic opportunity to mould little minds, to make environmental awareness second nature to kids. We can be proud when we hear that our preschoolers are reprimanding adults on issues green!!

Tourist
=-=-=-=
An American tourist was visiting a small village in Ireland when there was a sudden gust of wind which blew his hat off into the middle of a nearby pond.
Walking over to a local, who was sitting beside the pond, the tourist asked, "Say, son, how deep is this pond?"
"Oh, only a few inches," replied the local.
After taking his shoes off and rolling his trousers up over his knees, the tourist stepped into the pond to retrieve his hat and, within a few seconds, was completely submerged in the water. Swimming out to the middle of the pond he finally reached his hat, and then struggled back to edge.
Climbing out, he turned to the local and screamed, "Hey you, I thought you said that pond was only a few inches deep!"
"Well," shrugged the local, "the water only comes
half way up that duck over there."

I met a man who had been married for 66 years.
"Amazing. 66 years!" I said. "What's the secret to such a long, happy marriage?"
"Well," he replied, "It's like this. The man makes all the big decisions and the woman just makes the little decisions."
"Really?" I responded. "Does that really work?"
"Oh, yes," he said proudly. "66 years, and so far, not one big decision!"

Because my mother had a habit of losing her cordless phone, I bought her a phone with a clip on it so she could attach it directly to her belt. A few days later, I walked into my mother's home and found her standing in the middle of the living room, halfway dressed. That didn't strike me as odd so much as the fact that she was holding her pants to the side of her head and speaking into them.
"Don't look at me that way," she yelled. "The phone started ringing and I couldn't figure out how to undo this stupid clip!"
