Tax Rebate Scams

Starting today, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment.

Be aware that identity thieves are already pushing scams involving the stimulus payments. At least one telephone scam is making the rounds using the proposed rebates as bait. Some people have received phone calls about the economic stimulus payments, in which the caller impersonates an IRS employee. The caller asks the taxpayer for their Social Security and bank account numbers, claiming that the IRS needs the information to complete the processing of the taxayer's payment. In reality, the IRS uses the information contained on the taxpayer's tax return to process stimulus payments, rather than contacting taxpayers by phone or e-mail.

An e-mail claiming to come from the IRS about the "2008 Economic Stimulus Refund" tells recipients to click on a link to fill out a form, apparently for direct deposit of the payment into their bank account. This appears to be an identity theft scheme to obtain recipients' personal and financial information so the scammers can clean out their victims' financial accounts. In reality, taxpayers do not have to fill out a separate form to get a stimulus payment or have it directly deposited; all they had to do was file a tax return and provide direct deposit information on the return.

Today's Highlight in History

Mutiny on the HMS Bounty

On this date in 1789, three weeks into a journey from Tahiti to the West Indies, the HMS Bounty was seized in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian, the master's mate. Captain William Bligh and 18 of his loyal supporters were set adrift in a small, open boat, and the Bounty set course for Tubuai south of Tahiti.  By remarkable seamanship, however, Bligh and his men reached Timor in the East Indies on June 14, 1789, after a voyage of about 3,600 miles. Bligh returned to England and soon sailed again to Tahiti, from where he successfully transported breadfruit trees to the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Christian and his men attempted to establish themselves on the island of Tubuai. Unsuccessful in their colonizing effort, the Bounty sailed north to Tahiti, and 16 crewmen decided to stay there, despite the risk of capture by British authorities. Christian and eight others, together with six Tahitian men, a dozen Tahitian women, and a child, decided to search the South Pacific for a safe haven. In January 1790, the Bounty settled on Pitcairn Island, an isolated and uninhabited volcanic island more than 1,000 miles east of Tahiti. The mutineers who remained on Tahiti were captured and taken back to England where three were hanged. A British ship searched for Christian and the others but did not find them.

In 1808, an American whaling vessel was drawn to Pitcairn by smoke from a cooking fire. The Americans discovered a community of children and women led by John Adams, the sole survivor of the original nine mutineers. According to Adams, after settling on Pitcairn the colonists had stripped and burned the Bounty, and internal strife and sickness had led to the death of Fletcher and all the men but him. In 1825, a British ship arrived and formally granted Adams amnesty, and he served as patriarch of the Pitcairn community until his death in 1829.

Quote of the Day

"Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved.  The real milestones are less prepossessing.  They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave.  Our lives are measured by these."

Information Products for Dummies by Sarah Pine

A recent trip to the book store opened my eyes vastly in terms of product creation. Any one who has been to a book store knows about the Dummies series. It seems almost like a dumb idea in itself really, teach people some fairly simple things they should already know. However, we take for granted that everyone already knows what we do.Each person contains pockets of information that others would love to have.

When it comes to the internet you have to think that many people do not even know how to use their computers to begin with. I know it sounds crazy but flick on a tv and you will see the video professor dvd products designed to help the computer illiterate get online or type papers. The Dummies series has mastered this art in that it has honed down just about everything you would like to know and compressed the information in a user friendly book.

James Brausch recommends you created a DVD in order to do something very similar. Even better than a book, a DVD can show you exactly what you need to do in order to perform a certain task. What you really need to do is stop and take a look at what your pockets of information are. Can you provides tips and tricks in web hosting, article writing, traffic building, seo? If you are not an internet marketer maybe you have tips and tricks related to weight loss, healthy living, automotive repair, or just about anyting else.

There is no reason why you can not set up your own website and create your own Dummies series. In fact if you do not know how to set up a site or create a product page there are others that have created dummy type products to help you! My first product was one such item that shows site owners how to host blog carnivals to increase their traffic.

Get started today and you could have your own site and products tomorrow. If for some reason you have never run across the for Dummies series do a Google search and you will be amazed at how many topics come up. What does that mean to you? It means you have an endless array of possible product ideas. Good luck.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

A Real Person
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Manning the computer help desk for the local school district was my first job. And though I was just an intern, I took the job very seriously. But not every caller took me seriously.

"Can I talk to a real person?" a caller asked.

"I am real," I said.

"Oh, I'm sorry," the caller said. "That was rude of me. What I meant to say was, could I talk to someone who actually knows something?"

-----

A woman went to her doctor and said, "I want to have my husband committed."

"Well, it's not that simple. You need proof that he's mentally incompetent."

"He goes ice fishing."

"Okay. Close enough for me."

-----

A businessman had a tiring day on the road. He checked into a hotel and, because he was concerned that the dining room might close soon, left his luggage at the front desk and went immediately to eat.

After a leisurely dinner, he reclaimed his luggage and realized that he had forgotten his room number. He went back to the desk and told the clerk on duty, "My name is John Roberts, could you please tell me what room I am in?"

"Certainly," said the clerk. "You're in the lobby."

Riddle

Four cars come to a four way stop, all coming from a different
direction. They can't decide who got there first, so they all go
forward at the same time. They do not crash into each other, but
all four cars go. How is this possible?

Do you know the answer? If not, look for the solution later in this newsletter.
