Tip of the Day
Just For Vista?
Windows Defender automatically comes along with Vista, but you can also download a free version of it for earlier Windows operating systems. The free version of Windows Defender is available for Windows XP SP2, as well as, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. (It will only work with the last two if you validate it through the Windows Genuine Advantage program first though).
Now, I know you're probably wondering how the free version stacks up next to the Vista version, right? Well, as far as I can see, it seems to work just as well. If you download Windows Defender to an earlier operating system, it will run through all the same scans, etc. that it does for Vista. It's obviously going to work a little better for Vista, because it's the security program that was made specifically for it, but if you're looking for something new for an older Windows computer, the free download will do the trick! So, if you're not using Vista and would like to download the free version of Windows Defender, you can do so right here. <http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/microsoft-defender.html> I hope you enjoy it!

Today's Highlight in History
Battle of Ream's Station, Virginia
On this day in 1853, Confederate troops secured a vital supply line into Petersburg, Virginia, when they halt destruction of the Weldon and Petersburg Railroad by Union troops.
The railroad, which ran from Weldon, North Carolina, was a major supply line for General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. For more than two months, Lee had been under siege at Petersburg by General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac. Grant had tried to cut the rail line in June and again in August. On August 18, his troops succeeded in capturing a section of the track, but the Confederates simply began to stop the trains further south of Petersburg and haul the supplies by wagon into the city.
Grant responded by ordering his troops to tear up the track and move further south. Soldiers from General Winfield Hancock's corps tore up eight miles of rail, but Lee moved quickly to halt the operation. On August 25, General Ambrose P. Hill's infantry and General Wade Hampton's cavalry were ordered to attack the Federals at Ream's Station, and they drove the Yankees into defensive positions. The Union earthworks, hastily constructed the day before, were arranged in a square shape that was too small and so Confederate shells easily passed over the top. The green troop in Union General John Gibbon's division was unnerved by the bombardment, and a Confederate attack broke through the Yankee lines. The Union force retreated in disarray.
Hancock's corps lost 2,700 men, most of whom were
captured during the retreat. Hill and Hampton lost just 700. The battle
was a stinging defeat for Hancock's proud Second Corps, which had held
the Union line against Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, and was considered
among the best in the Army of the Potomac. Gibbon and Hancock blamed each
other for the disaster, and both soon left their positions in the Second
Corps.
Trivia

Quote of the Day
"Memories and mistakes should be guideposts, not hitching posts."

Woman in Business
Whether you are officially a sales person or not, you are spending a lifetime in selling to others what you want to see happen. We are motivated to accomplish what "we" want to accomplish.
If you think you are not a sales person, think again. When you have to sell the kids on taking the garbage out, that's a sales job. When you want to sell your spouse on helping you do something, that's a sales job.
You are always selling something to somebody even if it doesn't seem like you are. So, if there is a secret to increase your results ratio in getting what you want, wouldn't you want to know what that secret is? Well, of course you would want to know.
Here is a concept we are going to be working on over the next few weeks that will help you sell successful results in your everyday activities both on the job in your career and at home with your families.
We start with knowing what our own behavioral styles are in the DISC that is described in the following section. Then we need to pay attention and conclude what the person's behavioral style is that we are trying to sell a concept to.
Once you know your styles and their styles, then you blend those styles together, adapting your behavioral styles to their behavioral styles to communicate on their terms not yours and you will be more successful at getting others to do what you want them to do.
Wishing You the Very Best!

A Little Humor to Start
the Week
Dog Growth
=-=-=-=-=-=
A distraught dog owner called his vet pleading for an immediate appointment. He explained that his dog had a large growth or swelling near the corner of its mouth. The vet told him to bring the animal right over. When the man came in, the vet examined the dog as the man stood by, anxiously waiting. At last the vet turned to him and asked, "Do you have any children?"
"Oh, good grief, is it contagious?" the man gasped.
"No," the doctor answered. "It's bubble gum."

As a professor at the Air Force Institute of Technology, I taught a series of popular courses on software engineering. The program was highly competitive and difficult to get into, but one student made our decision whether to accept him quite simple.
When asked to fax over his college transcript, the student told me, "Well, I would, but it's the only copy I have."

My 50-something friend Nancy and I decided to introduce her mother to the magic of the Internet. Our first move was to access the popular "Ask Jeeves" site, and we told her it could answer any question she had.
Nancy's mother was very skeptical until Nancy said, "It's true, Mom. Think of something to ask it."
As I sat with fingers poised over the keyboard, Nancy's mother thought a minute, then responded, "How is Aunt Helen feeling?"
