Missing Email

If you are not getting email from someone or from a newsletter that you wish, you should also the sender's e-mail address to your Address Book. This will help your e-mail to see that incoming mail from certain senders is A OK! To do this in Outlook Express, find the e-mail from the sender you want to add to your book, right click on the message and choose "Add this sender to address book."

For AOL e-mail, view a message from the sender you want to add and find the "Address to Address book" icon on the far right side of the window. Click on the icon and then choose Save.

For Hotmail users, view a message from the sender and click on "Save Address" on the right hand side of the toolbar. It will then prompt you to enter some details about the sender if you want. Click OK when you're done.

Yahoo! users just need to view a message from the sender and click on the "Add to Address Book" icon. Once that is done, the sender's e-mail address will come up in a different text box and you just need to click on "Add to Address Book" again to finish.

If you use Thunderbird e-mail, go to your Inbox and double click the name or the address in the "Sender" column. The e-mail message will then come up on your screen in a separate window. Now, right click on the sender's name or address and choose "Add to Address Book." Then click OK to finish.

And last, but not least, if you use Microsoft Outlook, go to your Inbox and double click on the name or address in the "From" column. This will bring the message to its full screen size. Next, right click on the sender's name or address, choose "Add to Outlook Contacts" and then click OK.

Now, if you've gone through all the above instructions and you're still having trouble getting the e-mails you're expecting, you may need to contact your ISP about the problem. Sometimes other people who use the same e-mail client as you continuously complain about certain e-mails being spam. Well, those certain e-mails just might be our newsletter or the other e-mails you do want. So, if enough people complain, an ISP will sometimes block that e-mail so that no one can get it. But, if you talk to your ISP, they might be able to set up some specific rules just for your account so you can start getting the e-mails you want again.

Something to Think About by Jan Tincher

Do you make mistakes?

Instead of thinking about all the mistakes you've made, how about if you figure out the *types* of mistakes you've made? No doubt you'll find there is a pattern. Patterns can be changed. If you find yourself saying, *I always do this!* and it's not what you *always* want to do, change it.

Knowledge is power, but not until it's applied. Use that knowledge to your advantage. Change your *mistake* pattern. Feel the power!

Food for Thought

Getting Your Email to Go Through

Have you had trouble getting email from people who say they sentit? Or your messages aren't getting to others?
As servers try desperately to filter out the ever increasing onslaught of spam, more than a few non-spam messages are gettingmopped up as well.

Here are a few simple ways to get around the problem.

1. Get one or two different email addresses. Get a Hotmailaddress. Use the free address your ISP provides you. When a customer calls saying, "didn't you get the five emails I sent you?" suggest they send again to one of your other addresses.

2. The same idea works in reverse. When a customer can't get your messages, ask if they have a different address. Chances are their server is filtering out a lot of their mail and they'vealready considered the additional address solution.

3. Watch for attachments getting blocked. Many people are keeping out viruses sent by attachment by refusing all attachments or those over a certain size. I paste the document into the body of the message in those cases.

4. Ask your site host to reduce the level of filtering on your email. Many can do this. Of course, you'll get more spam, but you will also get fewer cases where customers can't get email toyou.

The  secretary thought a moment, and then replied,

The man replied, "I have a flat tire."

The Dollar Stretcher

Repaying Student Loans

I consolidated my student loans a few years ago and was in forbearance for the last few years. Now, I'm starting to repay them at around $450 per month. I asked for a lower payment for the next few years (paying off credit card debt) and they told me the lowest they could go is an interest-only payment at around $400 per month. At that rate, it is estimated that I will finish paying off my loan in about 30 years. Is this possible or am I getting swindled by this company somehow? My loan is about $50,000, but I can't imagine $400 per month is only towards interest. Help!
Anna

Like Anna, many former college students have found out that repaying student loans can put a financial crimp in your lifestyle. According to Nellie Mae, the average student owes $18,900 at graduation.

Many former students find that their first jobs don't pay enough to make loan repayment easy. Some even think that student loans can be "forgiven." The government's student aid site <http://studentaid.ed.gov> states "Federal student loans are real loans, just like car loans or mortgage loans. You can't just get out of repaying a student loan if your financial circumstances become difficult..." In fact, in almost all cases, student loans are one of the few debts that even bankruptcy doesn't eliminate.

Fortunately, the borrower does have some options. Anna has used "forbearance." That's a temporary postponement or reduction of payments so the borrower can handle other financial difficulties.

She also "consolidated," which is refinancing one or more student loans. The length of the loan is often extended from the original 10 year plan to as long as 30 years.

Let's look at Anna's current situation. The consolidation stretched out the amount of time it takes to repay the loan, but it also increased the interest rate. Could her payments really be $400 for interest only? Consolidated loans have an interest ceiling of 8.25%. Anna can do a rough calculation on her own.

A $50,000 loan at 8.25% would require $4,125 a year ($50,000 x 0.825) to cover the interest. That works out to $343.75 per month ($4,125 / 12 months). So the loan company might be overcharging Anna. They should be able to explain exactly how they calculate her payments and show her the math they used to get the answer.

They should also be able to help her compare different loan repayment plans. For each, she should find out the interest rate, monthly payment and the total amount that she'll have to pay to close the loan. The lowest monthly payment might not be the best option. It's possible that a shorter term would have a lower interest rate and might not significantly increase her payment.

What other options are there? It might not work for Anna, but volunteering can reduce the debt. Find out about Americorps, the Peace Corps, VISTA, and the Army Reserve or National Guard. Some social service, medical and teaching jobs can reduce or even eliminate student loans. Check with your loan servicer to find out what's available.

If Anna owns a home with sizeable equity, she might have another option. A home equity loan could offer a lower interest rate and lower payments than the student loan. Before she makes any move in that direction, she'll want to study it carefully.

Anna may want to look at her lifestyle. Between student loans and credit cards, it appears that she's having trouble living within her income. She'll want to take corrective action now. Generally, too much debt is a problem that doesn't get better by itself. If left alone, it will only get worse.

Anna may be wondering if it was worthwhile getting her degree. Studies show that money borrowed to get an Associates Degree or Bachelor's at a public university will pay off. According to the Employment Policy Foundation, a bachelor's degree is worth an extra $2.1 million over a lifetime.

But, financing post graduate work on student loans can be dangerous. Some areas, like teaching, have pay scales that make it hard to repay significant amounts of student loans. In any case, we hope that her income grows quickly enough to make it a little easier to repay those student loans.

Keep on Stretching those Dollars!
