Tip of the Day

Holiday Shopping

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Many consider it the "official" beginning to the holiday season. Most retailers online as well as online will usually provide massive discounts on their products. Most of us will use our credit cards and there are a few common sense rules we should follow.

As a number one rule never give your credit card number to a website that doesn't have a secure connection. This is identified by one of two things an “S” at the end of “http” (https) or a padlock in the lower right portion of your I.E. browser. This doesn't mean if you go to a website and you don't see either of these indications of a secure connection, that you're unsafe. Let me explain, you really only should see these signs when you go to check out, this is, where you are putting your sensitive information (billing information). With this security in place your transaction is safer than handing a clerk your card at a department store.

All of this in mind, let's talk about some other things you can do to protect yourself online and be a safe as possible. There are a couple of things on your end that you can do to stop the possibility of online theft. Two things you can do and we've talked about before is only work with reputable sites. What type of card and how you use it can be a huge barrier for would be thieves as well. For instance, it's better to use a true credit card and not a debit card for online shopping. Better yet, dedicate one credit card to nothing but online sales.

The credit card manufacturers also offer online protection for your safety. They use security features like generating an extra number just for that transaction or have lists of vendors that support their own security measures.

Discover Card has, without a doubt, one of the best online security features of all the major credit card players. They have something called "single use card numbers". Here's basically how it works: When you find something you want to get online, you simply find the total out. From there you activate their software and Discover will generate a single use credit card number for you. This number is then invalid and of no use to anyone. This is a great idea and it doesn't matter if the vendor you're purchasing from accepts this feature or not, all you have to worry about is it supporting Discover card—no extra support.

I would have to say that VISA has the next best online shopping protection, with a password feature. When you go online and make a transaction a window will pop up and ask you for a password to approve the payment. This sounds great but vendors have to comply, which means this can hurt the amount of online vendors that actually support this feature. VISA does have a lot of vendors you can choose from, but it still lacks an all-encompassing secure transaction to anywhere like Discover card. *Some banks do offer one time use VISA numbers to their customers.

Mastercard is the same setup as Visa without the vendor support, which makes this feature even more unappealing. MasterCard, from what I could see, didn't make this process easy for merchants and I think you notice the difference in vendor support. It does you no good to have this security feature activated on your account and have nowhere online authorized to buy from. *Some banks do offer one time use Master Card numbers to their customers.

American Express Offers no online purchasing protection that I could find, not even a link on the home page about protecting yourself-online. Maybe someone should tell them what their competition is up to, because they haven't even started the race.

Online purchasing doesn't have to be filled with fear and doubt. Just by keeping your eyes open and choosing one of the safer methods of payment you can all but eliminate the threat of online theft.

Today's Highlight in History

FDR establishes modern Thanksgiving holiday

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a bill officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

The tradition of celebrating the holiday on Thursday dates back to the early history of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies, when post-harvest holidays were celebrated on the weekday regularly set aside as "Lecture Day," a midweek church meeting where topical sermons were presented. A famous Thanksgiving observance occurred in the autumn of 1621, when Plymouth governor William Bradford invited local Indians to join the Pilgrims in a three-day festival held in gratitude for the bounty of the season.

Thanksgiving became an annual custom throughout New England in the 17th century, and in 1777 the Continental Congress declared the first national American Thanksgiving following the Patriot victory at Saratoga. In 1789, President George Washington became the first president to proclaim a Thanksgiving holiday, when, at the request of Congress, he proclaimed November 26, a Tuesday, as a day of national thanksgiving for the U.S. Constitution. However, it was not until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to fall on the last Thursday of November, that the modern holiday was celebrated nationally.

With a few deviations, Lincoln's precedent was followed annually by every subsequent president--until 1939. In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt departed from tradition by declaring November 23, the next to last Thursday that year, as Thanksgiving Day. Considerable controversy surrounded this deviation, and some Americans refused to honor Roosevelt's declaration. For the next two years, Roosevelt repeated the unpopular proclamation, but on November 26, 1941, he admitted his mistake and signed a bill into law officially making the fourth Thursday in November the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day.

Trivia

Woman in Business

Tap into your Higher Intelligence
By Dr Jill Ammon-Wexler

When we think of intelligence, IQ immediately comes to mind. But IQ may in fact be the most limited aspect of our human intelligence.

Early in the 20th century, the concept of IQ came roaring to the forefront of psychology and education. IQ tests quickly became a popular means of measuring human intelligence.

IQ scores were used to sort people into “levels” of estimated intelligence. The theory was: The higher a person’s IQ, the brighter they were.

The Discovery of EQ

Then in the 1990’s science writer Daniel Goldman wrote a book summarizing years of neuroscience research. The research included in his book “Emotional Intelligence” packed a tremendous impact. His book raised emotional intelligence (EQ) to an equal standing with IQ.

IQ vs EQ

IQ is a measure of our familiar “straight-line, analytical intelligence.” Emotional intelligence (EQ), on the other hand, is driven by feelings and intuition. EQ is “associative thinking,” as it allows us to discover associations between our actions, and the results.

And as author Goldman pointed out, our emotional intelligence (EQ) also controls our ability to fully use our IQ intelligence. This occurs because if the areas of the brain in which we “feel” are damaged we are less able to think effectively.

There is a huge gap between IQ’s straight-line logic and EQ’s associative thinking and our amazing human capability to think “outside the box.” Neither IQ nor EQ are adequate to explain the full richness of our human intelligence.

The Discovery of HQ

The modern discovery of an even more complex human intelligence first unfolded in the 1990’s, when two neurologists Wolf Singer and Rodolfo Llinas began to investigate our brain’s mysterious electro-magnetic fields.

Their work led to the discovery of a previously unidentified form of human intelligence a very surprising higher intelligence (HQ) that causes our entire cortex (our “thinking center”) to vibrate like a bowl of jello in a single coherent frequency.

During the past few years, exciting research using such high-tech equipment as fMRI and PET scans has proven that these higher intelligence (HQ) whole-brain vibrations are the aspect of our brain we use to aspire to higher levels of achievement and conciousness.

Our higher intelligence (HQ) is the aspect of our intelligence that allows us to create meaning in our lives -- to reach beyond our rational and emotional thinking.

The secret is to literally exhaust your rational (IQ) and associative (EQ) intelligences in your search for an answer. Then take a break -- a nap or walk. Your relaxed (and probably exhausted) surrender will bring a wholly unexpected answer to your question. The great creative genius Albert Einstein claimed to have his greatest HQ insights in the shower.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Potato Salad
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

On my way to a picnic, I stopped at a fast-food place to order a quart of potato salad.

"We don't sell it by the quart," the clerk snapped.

"Okay, then give me two pints, please," I replied.

I'm proud to say I held my tongue when she asked, "Do you want it in one container?"

Tommy had reached school age. His Mother managed with a blast of propaganda to make him enthusiastic about the idea. She bought him lots of new clothes, told him of the new friends he'd meet and so on. Came the first day, he eagerly went off and came back home with a lot of glowing reports about school.

Next morning when she woke him up, he asked "What for ?" She told him it was time to get ready for school.

"What, again ?" he asked.

-----

When the family car developed a slight knock, the husband asked his wife if she had bought regular or premium gas, but she couldn't remember.

"You probably got the cheaper gas," he said. "That could account for the engine running so rough."

"No, the gas wasn't cheaper!" she replied indignantly.

"Well, how much did it cost?" asked the husband.

"It cost the same as always," said the wife. "I bought the usual ten dollars worth."

-----

On my first day working at the gas station, I watched a senior co-worker measure the level of gasoline in the underground tanks by lowering a giant measuring stick down into them.

"What would happen if I threw a lit match into the hole?" I joked.

"It would go out," he replied in a very factual manner.

"Really?" I asked, surprised to hear that. "Is there a lack of oxygen down there or some safety device that would extinguish it before the fumes ignited?"

"No, the force from the explosion would blow out the match." "

forward at the same time. They do not crash into each other, but
all four cars go. How is this possible?
