A Message from Bob

Friday Rant

Bob,
“We sometimes have to overrule the majority when it is clearly out of tune with current reality.  At one time the majority supported slavery, being strongly influenced in that opinion by the Bible.  I think you'd now agree the majority was clearly wrong.

A majority at one time was convinced the earth was flat. Apparently it is not.

In 1843, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes was the first person to state that doctors should wash their hands before touching patients. He was ridiculed by the vast majority of physicians.

Surprisingly, this is still a problem, but fortunately for all of us the majority is gradually being overruled. History shows that progress has been more often accomplished by far sighted individuals and minorities (extremists?), very seldom by the masses.”

Cheers,
Guy

-----

Maybe there is something here that I don’t see. H.L. Mencken, when he was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun papers said “Democracy is pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance,” which would certainly tend to support your point.

There are many things that one can point to in the history of the world where people had misconceptions about things. Many times, because of the number of people who believed in them they became fact in their minds, and acted as if they were.

You give a few examples of when the majority was wrong and a few far sighted individuals proved them so. But how did they do it? Education – not force. All the legislation in the world will not convince someone that the earth is round if they believe it is flat.

The majority of people in Europe were overruled when Hitler decided to “purify the Arian Race.” Look at the consequences of that. Would we have gone to war with Iraq if the truth, purported by a few,  were known about the non-existent “weapons of mass destruction?”

If I disagree with you, we either settle it or agree to disagree. The Courts Mandate – they don’t Educate. If you or I don't follow the madates of the Court, we will be punished. While they certainly should interpret the existing laws on a “case by case” basis, it is not their job to make the law. It is the job of the Legislature. They have the power to create, amend, and change laws.

The court is the authority that adjudicates legal disputes and dispenses civil, criminal, or administrative justice in accordance with the rules of law. They are not empowered to make laws, but it seems lately that they have been attempting to do just this.

Since I began with a quote from H.L. Menken, it seems appropriate to end with one. “A judge is a law student who marks his own examination papers.”

Tip of the Day

Airport Security

You've talked about laptops going through airport security before, but what about other electronic devices, such as flash drives and CDs? Can those be damaged when going through the security line?

With Christmas and New Year's right around the corner, I'm sure a lot of you will be traveling via airplane to go visit your family and friends. And along with everything else, you'll probably be taking certain devices, such as your digital camera, cell phone, MP3 player or even possibly a flash drive. No matter what you take with you, it's vital to know what you need to do to keep all of those things safe while you travel. Keep reading for some helpful suggestions!

The biggest concern when it comes to traveling with your electronic devices is the airport security line. It's always been a fear that when you send your media through the X-ray machine, everything you have saved will be erased or damaged. For example, if you send your digital camera through, will all of the pictures you have saved be demolished? Or, how about your MP3 player or iPod? Will all of your songs be erased with one quick swipe? It's scary to think about that happening, but luckily, it rarely does.

Fortunately, most airports think about that kind of thing beforehand. Airport X-ray machines actually emit an electromagnetic energy, which is not magnetic at all. Therefore, they cannot damage or destroy any electrical equipment. This goes for laptops, CDs, DVDs, PDAs, memory cards, floppy disks, flash drives, external hard drives, MP3 players, iPods, digital cameras, cell phones and just about anything else you can think of. So, just to make sure we're clear, let's go over all of those in a little more detail. Here we go!

The metal detector that you walk through is a different story. Metal detectors can sometimes damage electronic devices, so you'll want to make sure you don't try to carry any sensitive device through one.

Did you know...

Almost every weekday morning, Kleenexes are handed to the commuters in front of Japan's rail and bus stations for free. The tissues are distributed by workers of the companies whose messages and advertisement are printed on the packages. The reason for this... most public bathrooms do not have paper towels or toilet paper!

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented.
It was ruled "Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden"...
and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

A Little Humor for the Weekend

Dog Fight
=-=-=-=-=-=

Two farmers where discussing who had the meanest dog. One who had a very mean looking Doberman insisted that his was the meanest and that it could lick any other dog in the county. The second just looked at his mangy old yellow dog and said that he would wager his against any dog in the country.

Well, after some animated discussion they finally decided to let the dogs fight it out.  After a very short snarling match the old yellow dog leapt on the Doberman and killed it outright.

The first farmer was aghast. His dog had been beating other dogs for years and had never had more than a small scratch or two. He turned to the other farmer and asked, "What kind of dog did you say yours is?"

The first farmer replied, "Well before he lost his tail, we called him a Mountain Lion!"

-----

I was at a baseball game in Yankee Stadium, when I decided to get myself a hot dog. As I stood up, my husband asked me to buy him a beer. The young clerk at the concession stand asked to see verification of age.

"You've got to be kidding," I said. "I'm almost 40 years old."

He apologized, but he said he had to see some ID, it was policy.

When I showed him my driver's license, the clerk served me the beer. "That will be $6.25, please." he said.

I gave him $7.00 and told him to keep the change. "The tip's for carding me," I said.

He put the change into his tip cup and replied, "Thanks."

And as I walked away, I heard him add, "Works every time."

-----

Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post.

"Don't worry," my husband reassured me. "I'll have him trained in no time."

For several days, my husband patiently "trained" our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach him a lesson.

The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.

Family dinner was an enjoyable weekly ritual for us. Although my Mother was in her late 80's she certainly still had the ability to clearly say what was on her mind.

This was the first dinner on my sister's beautiful new dining room furniture. As we all sat enjoying good food and conversation Mom kept squirming in her chair. Finally, my sister asked, "Are you alright? Are you uncomfortable?"

Without looking up from her dinner Mom replied, "No, the chair is."

Motivational Tip For The Day
by Jan Tincher

What is the quality of your experiences?

If you put all your experiences together in the puzzle called life, does it show inner success?

Inner success always shows in outer success. The more you work on yourself, your thoughts, your attitudes, your faith, the more inner success you will cultivate.

The more inner success you cultivate, the more outer successes you reap.

What a coincidence, huh?

Here is an article that will help:  Are You Programmed?
