Registration

Many people will receive either software, or a new computer this Christmas Season. When entering the serial number for a program you're installing, use the number keys that are above the letter keys on your keyboard. Sometimes the numbers on the keypad at the right side of your keyboard are interpreted as different characters. This will prevent the serial number from being accepted even though it looks right.

If the serial number was sent to you via email, copy and paste it and you can be sure it is right.

Today's Highlight in History

Continental Congress creates a Continental Navy

On Friday, December 22, 1775, the Continental Congress creates a Continental Navy, naming Esek Hopkins, Esq., as commander in chief of the fleet.  Congress also named four captains to the new service: Dudley Saltonstall, Abraham Whipple, Nicholas Biddle and John Burrows Hopkins. Their respective vessels, the Alfred, Columbus, Andrew Doria and Cabot, became the first ships of the Navy’s fleet. Five first lieutenants, including future American hero John Paul Jones, five second lieutenants, and three third lieutenants also received their commissions.

The new Admiral Hopkins, as he was dubbed by George Washington, was a Rhode Islander of some standing. His brother was Stephen Hopkins, the state’s governor. Esek Hopkins had married well and used his wife’s fortune to buy a ship. It proved a wise investment. He added to his wealth working as a privateer during the Seven Years’ War. In his new position, Congress promised to pay him “125 dollars per calendar month”; they also informed that he could look forward to some “share of the prizes allotted to the captors.” Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina designed Hopkins’ personal standard, which flew from the first navy fleet. The yellow flag bore the image of a coiled snake and the Patriot motto, “Don’t Tread on Me.”

Hopkins’ first assignment was to assess the feasibility of an attack on British naval forces in the Chesapeake Bay. After sailing south with his meager force of eight ships, Hopkins decided that victory in such an encounter was impossible. He sailed to the Bahamas instead, where he attacked the British port of Nassau, a decision for which he was relieved of his command upon returning to the continent

Trivia

The poem commonly known as The Night Before Christmas was originally titled
"A Visit From Saint Nicholas". This poem was written by Clement Moore for his children and some guests,
one of whom anonymously sent the poem to a New York newspaper for publication.

Quote of the Day

"Iron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold weather becomes frozen:
even so does inaction sap the vigors of the mind."

Woman in Business

* Life Is Education--a Louise Hay quote by Sandy Karn

I saw a poster note in an office this week that said Life is Education.  I have contemplated that ever since and isn't that the truth?

Life is an education as we're paying attention to life and it is an education when we're not.  We have opportunities early on in our learning in our life's journey to listen carefully from within to the real messages in life, but if we're not paying attention, going into concern which slows us down, getting worried which can shut down our thinking and most importantly letting fear paralize us, we will learn from all this as well, but the lessons get harder and harder when we do these things and prolong our learning.

If we learn early and stay focused on what is important and can access all the resources we have within us and around us, our lessons seem to be less painful, but if we don't, unfortunately, those lessons can create a lot of havoc in our lives.

I would like to think that we're listening, staying out of fear and holding onto faith because faith is the direct access to the truth and the truth will set you free as we have heard a thousand times.  Since results don't lie, I have noticed that for whatever our reasons, we have to be reminded to stay out of fear so we might have a better chance for a smoother ride.

It doesn't mean we WILL have a smoother ride by staying out of fear, but we just might have more solutions to our problems to choose from if we do.

Wisthing You the Very Best!

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Polar Bear
=-=-=-=-=-=

A Polar bear walks into a bar and says to the bartender,
"I'll have a gin......................... and tonic."

The Bartender says,
"What's with the big pause?"

The bear answers,
"I don't know. My father had them, too!"

There once was a czar in Russia whose name was Rudolph the Great. He was standing in his house one day with his wife. He looked out the window and saw something happening. He said to his wife,"Look honey. Its raining."

She, being the stubborn type, responded,"I don't think so, dear. I think it's snowing."

But Rudolph knew better. So he said to his wife, "Let's step outside and we'll find out."

Lo and behold, they stepped outside and discovered it was in fact rain. And Rudolph turns to his wife and replies, "I knew it was raining. Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!"

My mother was recently on a flight returning from Utah. As the plane was a small puddle jumper, the flight attendants were required to demonstrate the life vest, the oxygen mask, etc. instead of turning on a video.

After they finished their presentation, one of them said "To those of you who listened, thank you. To those of you who ignored us, good luck."

Last October, after much deliberation, I bought a magnolia tree from our local nursery. After only a few weeks I noticed that the leaves had started to shrivel and the tree appeared to be on its last legs in spite of my tender care.

So I took some leaf samples and marched back to the nursery to demand an explanation or get my money back.

"I know exactly what's wrong with your magnolia," said the manager.

"Good!" I exclaimed. "What's it suffering from?"

You can imagine how stupid I felt when he simply said, "Autumn."

"Cooking for the Empty Nest"
Recipe of the Week

Chicken Burger Goulash

This is a nice and healthy alternative to ground beef. Or if you wish you can substitute ground turkey for the chicken – both are good.

1 lb of ground chicken
1 can of stewed tomatoes
1 medium onion chopped
1 green pepper chopped
rice
salt & pepper

Brown chicken, drain & put aside. Cook onions & green pepper until tender. Add cooked chicken & tomatoes. Stir together & heat until hot. Add salt & pepper. Serve over cooked rice. I use one of the quick rices, the kind you can microwave. I put the rice in the microwave while I am cooking the burger mixture. It takes 15-20 minutes to fix the meal. I fix a salad with it.
