Tip of the Day

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

I will go over what exactly carpal tunnel is, what some of the symptoms are and how all of you could be affected by it. Let's get started!  It is basically the result of a compressed nerve in the wrist area. The affected nerve is called the median nerve and it is in charge of delivering sensations to the thumb and all of the other fingers, minus the pinky. The term carpal tunnel actually comes from the passageway of bones and ligaments in the wrist that the median nerve goes through. If the median nerve is compressed, it could result in numbness and different levels of pain.

A lot of different symptoms surround the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, including pain, numbness and tingling. Some people even suffer from lack of strength in their grip and burning sensations in the wrist and hand areas. Severe cases of the syndrome also include the inability to sense hot and cold.

The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can start to flare up when your wrist or arm has been compressed or has been in the same position for a long period of time. It could be caused by sleeping with your wrists flexed all night, using a mouse or keyboard for too long without taking a break or it can even be caused by falling and landing on your wrists the wrong way. Keeping your wrists in the same position without rest can definitely cause carpal tunnel.

Studies show that women are more likely to have carpal tunnel than men, mostly because their arms and nerves are smaller. It's also said that certain occupations carry a big risk for this type of injury. Some of those include assembly line workers, typists or anything that requires you to do the same task over and over again. As you can see, using your computer for an extended amount of time without rest can be troublesome. If you fall into that category, you can take steps to avoid the carpal tunnel injury. For example, you should take plenty of breaks. If you just take five minutes out of every half hour to flex your wrists and relax your muscles, you'll be much better off in the end. Doing that can really save you from some pain later on.

If you feel any of the above symptoms, you'll want to consult your doctor. Your doctor will probably start out with a treatment plan of rest for approximately two weeks. Surgery is used as a last resort, but you should do all you can beforehand to make sure it doesn't come to that. Certain drugs, acupuncture and massage therapy have also been used in treatment plans. You should also ensure that arthritis isn't causing your pain and if it is, be sure to treat that first.

Now, if you fear carpal tunnel because you use your computer on a regular basis, there are some things you can do to combat it. First, try switching to an ergonomic keyboard. They are split and angled so that your fingers rest more naturally on the keys. On a standard keyboard, you have to twist your wrists outward, which puts more strain on your carpal tunnel area. An ergonomic keyboard helps you position your wrists for a more comfortable feel, which minimizes the pressure. There are ergonomic mice you can use as well and you can find those and the keyboards at any regular computer store

Something to Think About by Jan Tincher

Do you know how to make sure your next meeting will go well?

Here are four ways to insure that it does.

Get the needed information.

Observe winning role models -- watch people in action. See how the more successful ones get their point across with the least amount of fuss.

Simulate the real thing -- practice what you will say and how you will say it. In your mind, speak directly to the person or people you want to hear it. Make sure you are open to what they each have to say, and even visualize what their thoughts will be.

Visualize the outcome -- relax and go through the scenario again. Make sure you see yourself as very successful when the meeting is over. Keep that feeling you get when you see your successful picture.

Food for Thought

Headlines--How to Say a Lot in a Few Words

What is the most important part of your ad? Well, consider the fact that most people don't read ads, they glance at them or skim over them. When they do this, they usually notice only one thing, and that is what prompts them to read further.

The first thing people notice about your ad is the headline. That means you have to say the most powerful, motivating thing you can in the headline, a task that is made difficult by the fact that you have to be brief and concise.

So what can you say in a few words that will catch the reader's attention? Here are a few tips for how to say a lot with a little:

*Speak directly to the reader by addressing them as "you." Readers don't pay much attention until they feel that something is addressing them directly.

*Offer something free in the headline. Then people will have to read on to find out how to get this free something.

*Use statistics and specifics. For example, if you sold weight loss supplements, your headline could read: Proven to Help 96% of Users Lose Weight Permanently.

*Start with a testimonial in quotation marks. People don't always want to hear what advertisers have to say, but they want to hear what regular people have to say.

Swamps of Louisiana

A New York boy was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin.

"Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight?"

The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."

I had always talked about my job a lot at home, and my young daughter had always expressed great interest. So I thought it would be a treat for her to spend the day with me at the office. Since I wanted it to be a surprise, I didn't tell her where we were going, just that it
would be fun. Although usually a bit shy, she seemed excited to meet each colleague I introduced. On the way home, however, she seemed somewhat down.

"Didn't you have a nice time?" I asked.

"Well, it was okay." she responded. "But I thought it would be more like a circus."

Confused, I asked, "Whatever do you mean?"

She said, "Well, you said you work with a bunch of clowns, and I never got to see them!"

Early one morning, I was awakened when one buzzed my barracks.

I ran through the possibilities, but couldn't identify it. Intrigued by what kind of helicopter it could be, I sprinted to the window just in time to see the single engine, twin-bladed main rotor lawn mower come into view.

The Dollar Stretcher
by Gary Foreman

You can survive the current economy

I enjoy watching the old westerns on TV. One thing I've learned is that if you're going to be a gunfighter, you need to always know what's happening around you. Failure to do that could put you in the Boot Hill cemetery.

Right now our economy is a little like the Wild West. Sometimes it seems like there are no rules. Or that whoever  has the most guns gets to make his/her own rules. So we might be wise to learn something from that old gunslinger and watch carefully what happens around us. We might keep our finances from an early burial. So here are 12 things to watch out for in 2009.

Watch for old pricing rules to become obsolete. You're going to have to pay attention to prices in the new year. Some prices will be trending up, while others slide down. And, some will change direction during the year. Now, more than ever, it's important to know your prices. Shop around for any major item <http://www.stretcher.com/menu/topic-a.htm#buying>. Use a grocery pricebook <http://www.stretcher.com/menu/topic- g.htm#groceries-PriceBook> to keep track of food prices.

It's a good time to challenge your assumptions. Just because you always bought a specific brand or store doesn't mean that you should continue. Challenging times cause companies to do things they wouldn't normally do. Some may drop prices significantly. Others could lower quality. Just because you've known a product or company for years doesn't mean that they can't change. In fact, you should expect it to happen.

Watch for ways to save a few dollars. Even if it's only a dollar or two a day. With an increase in uncertainty, it's much more likely that you could need a few extra bucks in a pinch.

Watch out for inflation in 2009. As the government pours money into the economy, some prices are bound to rise. It probably won't happen until people are comfortable that they can spend their money again. When they do, we'll all remember why government borrowing is dangerous.

Watch for opportunities to strengthen your position at work. Learn new skills. Be flexible. Do anything you can to make yourself valuable to your employer.

Watch for ways to help your friends and family. Even if you don't have money to spare, you can help. Volunteer to help with a plumbing problem. Or save them the expense of a trip to the store by offering to pick up a few items for them.

Watch out that you don't put your family in jeopardy helping others. It's nice to be generous, but things like co-signing a note could put your finances in a world of hurt.

Watch for opportunities. Even in the most challenging times, there are some opportunities. You'll need to think creatively, and it might take some work. But I bet that there's someone who owns an unoccupied "fixer-upper" home that would be willing to let a family live in it while repairs and upgrades were made in trade for rent.

Watch your stress levels. When finances are tight it's easy to get stressed-out. Letting that stress build up will only make things worse. Don't sacrifice your mental or physical health or marriage to stress. Watch a sunset, listen to music or find some other healthy stress reliever. By the way, shopping is not an acceptable stress reliever.

Watch for unusual bargains. You'll find more "liquidation pricing" on a variety of goods. Auctions will have fewer bidders and thus more bargains.

Watch your step. Now is a time to be careful in making big financial decisions, especially since some of your prior assumptions could be wrong. It's true that many mistakes are made when we're in a hurry. Those mistakes could be very damaging in this economy.

Watch your tongue. Saying too little or too much could be bad for your financial health. There's nothing wrong with letting a few close friends and family know that you're facing some financial challenges. In fact, it's wise to do so. But, you don't want to go to the other extreme where every conversation revolves around your problems. If you go there, you'll notice that people begin to stay away from you.

Watch your back. Is there some problem or debt that's sneaking up on you? Do you have a major appliance (think furnace, A/C unit, refrigerator) or car that's getting old and may need repair or replacement? Or maybe you're close to being unable to make a minimum payment that would  trigger the default rate on all of your credit cards.
