Tip of the Day

Tooltips

When you point your mouse over any item on your computer, you usually see a little box pop up with some information in it. Well, that's a tooltip! A tooltip is a common graphic that is used in conjunction with your mouse pointer to give you the information you need to know about certain items on your computer. Tooltips are always there to keep you informed and they can be found just about anywhere.

When you mouse over the clock in your system tray, a box with the date will pop up. That's a tooltip. If you have program icons in your quick launch area, a box will come up letting you know which program that icon belongs to. That's a tooltip too. When you go to your Start menu and hover your mouse over a program, a box with a description of what that program does shows up. How many tooltips can you find?

Today's Highlight in History

OK enters national vernacular

On this day in 1839, the initials "O.K." were first published in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for "oll correct," a popular slang misspelling of "all correct" at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans.

Its popularity exploded when it was picked up by contemporary politicians. When the incumbent president Martin Van Buren was up for reelection, his Democratic supporters organized a band of thugs to influence voters. This group was formally called the "O.K. Club," which referred both to Van Buren's nickname "Old Kinderhook" (based on his hometown of Kinderhook, New York), and to the term recently made popular in the papers. At the same time, the opposing Whig Party made use of "OK" to denigrate Van Buren's political mentor Andrew Jackson. According to the Whigs, Jackson invented the abbreviation "OK" to cover up his own misspelling of "all correct."

Jewelry: Pursuit through the Ages
by Annie Mucks

Man's desire for jewels dates back to around 3,000 B.C. It might even have been earlier than that but this is where our recorded history begins. King Tutankhamen's tomb was uncovered in the late 1920s and it was then that we discovered that man's interest in jewels did actually date back that far.

The Greeks started making jewelry by about 300 B.C. out of garnets, emeralds, pearls, and amethysts. Colored stones, glass, and enamel were used as well.

Bracelets, earrings, large necklaces, and earrings were next made in gold by the Italians. The Italians were renowned for the excellent gold jewelry they made.

In 13th century Europe, you were considered upper class if you had on gold, silver, and pearls. Those who did not wear these trinkets were considered commoners.

Jewelry also has been, and still is today, used as a token of love. "Faux" or fake jewelry started to show up between the 14th and 17th centuries. During this same time frame, jewelry made from precious metals and gemstones was extremely fashionable. The Europeans made a lot of money selling the fake jewelry that was sometimes made of glass and hard to tell from real.

There is nothing new under the sun as they say.

Jewelry is a key to ego gratification and has always been associated and identified with the upper social class. This was especially prevalent in the 17th century. Women during this time wore popular jewelry such as brooches, earrings, and ornaments for their dresses. Women wore jewelry with many different types of dresses too.

Finally, in the late 18th Century, England got the message and began producing glass and porcelain cameos, for which they are still famous today.

Also in England, ornate shoe buckles were part of the fashion-conscious, as well as jeweled buttons.

Wondering about France? Was the haute-couture capital of the world interested in jewelry as well?

France was there too. It was famous for centuries for its matching suites of semi-precious and precious gems. Examples of these were the amethysts and uncut garnets. These were all used in making rings, necklaces, bracelets, and the ever-present earrings.

And, Australia and America would eventually catch up by the time the Victorian era came around. Jewelry made by machines was not popular as of yet and folks demanded only items made from skilled craftsmen. When some found out during this time that some jewelry existed that was made from machines, it actually led to a revolt.

How times have changed, and how they have stayed the same, as the saying goes. To many of us living in the 21st Century, the creative setting and use of hair is considered an attractive "type" of jewelry in and of itself.  Women enjoy mixing antique jewels with a classic, trend-setting hair style.

Costume jewelry came out as a product of what used to be call "fake" jewelry. Now it is as popular as ever and very acceptable for wear. It can spice up anyone's collection of clothing and bring a little flair to any occasion.

In these uncertain financial times, if you want job stability, a good bet is to get into the jewelry industry, don't you think?

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Could it have been United?

The passengers were leaving the plane after landing, and one smiling, satisfied passenger paused to congratulate the flight attendant.

"Stewardess," he said happily, "I want to compliment you and the crew and especially the captain for getting here right on time. It's not often that an airline gets to where it's going exactly when they claim it will. I'm going to call your home office and let them know how pleased I am."

"Why, thank you, sir," the flight attendant answered, "but I think you should know--this is yesterday's flight."

One night at the dinner table, Jill commented, "When we were first married, you took the small piece of steak and gave me the larger. Now you take the large one and leave me the smaller. You don't love me any more!"

"Nonsense, darling," replied John, "you just cook better now."
