Tip of the Day

Attachments can contain viruses

Basically, anything that is executable (able to run)can contain a virus. You're generally safe with picture files, text files, and the like. However, it still pays to scan first.

Here is a (very) short list of the most common to watch out for:

exe
zip
scr
vbs
bat
com
pif
asp
doc
xls

Those are the most common. Don't misinterpret this to mean that if you get one of these files it's automatically a virus. A ".zip" file may be nothing more than a set of compressed files your friend sent you to look at. A "doc" or "xls" file may simply be an MS Office file. It's just that these type of files could also be viruses.

A couple other virus tricks you need to be aware of. First, MS Office files can contain what are called "Macro Viruses". Without getting into too much detail, these files can run a "macro" (a macro is a mini-program run from within another program) that can be as destructive as any "regular" virus. So, my advice on MS Office attachments is not to open them unless you are expecting them. If they just show up, verify with the sender first.

The other trick you need to look out for is an extra extension added to an attached file. For example, you may have something like "mypicture.jpg.vbs". In fact, if you don't have your computer set to view file extensions, it may just look like "mypicture.jpg" and omit that last "vbs" part.

This may appear to be a jpg picture file, but it's actually a Visual Basic Script file. If executed, it will infect your computer with a virus. Be careful out there.

Today's Highlight in History

Hail kills English troops

On so-called “Black Monday” in 1360, a hail storm killed an estimated 1,000 English soldiers in Chartres, France.

The Hundred Years’ War began in 1337; by 1359, King Edward III of England was actively attempting to conquer France. In October, he took a massive force across the English Channel to Calais. The French refused to engage in direct fights and stayed behind protective walls throughout the winter, while Edward pillaged the countryside.

In April 1360, Edward’s forces burned the Paris suburbs and began to move toward Chartres. While they were camped outside the town, a sudden storm materialized. Lightning struck, killing several people, and hailstones began pelting the soldiers, scattering the horses. One described it as “a foul day, full of myst and hayle, so that men dyed on horseback [sic].” Two of the English leaders were killed and panic set in among the troops, who had no shelter from the storm.

The heavy losses suffered by the English were seen by many as a sign from God. King Edward was convinced to negotiate peace with the French. On May 8, 1360, the Treaty of Bretigny was signed, marking the end of the first phase of the Hundred Years’ War. Edward agreed to renounce all claims to the throne of France, though he was given control of land in the north of the country. Fighting resumed nine years later, when the king of France declared war, claiming Edward had not honored the treaty. The last phase of the Hundred Years’ War did not end until 1453.

The largest hailstone recorded in modern times was found in Aurora, Nebraska. It was seven inches in diameter, about the size of a soccer ball. Hail typically falls at about 100 miles per hour.

20,000 lady bugs have been released into Camp Snoopy to allow

Quote of the Day

"Whenever I feel afraid, I hold my head erect, and whistle a happy tune,
and no one will suspect I'm afraid."

Woman in Business

The Conservation of Your Energy is Key by Sandy Karn

What is going on in your life that is causing you stress?  What can you do to de-stress your existence?  You can't fix a problem if you do not know what the problem is. You could be in the middle of a big problem and not even know that it is going on.

If you have a belief system that is off in any way, it can affect every decision you make which impacts everything you do. And THAT can be a BIG problem that you have that you don't even know that you have.

So, having prompted all these questions, are you taking time to evaluate how you are living your life right now, or are you so busy you really don't have time or you don't take the time to evaluate what's working and what's not working?

If you don't stop long enough to get in touch with your reality, your decisions could be focused on the wrong stuff and if you're focused on the wrong stuff, trust me, you WILL NOT GET TO WHERE YOU WANT TO BE GOING.

You will always be going somewhere, but where?  It will always be happening somehow, but how?  Things will always be one way or the other  around you, but what are they?  Which way are you going right now?  Is it the way you want it to be going or not?

Many questions to be thinking about and if you want the real answers to all of these ideas, then STOP THINKING.  There is way too much hectic energy going on in our world right now and you can tune into it and watch your mind chatter race or you can get quiet within yourself in quiet strength and listen in the silence of your mind and find your answers within you.

When you get those answers and you know within your heart of hearts you know and you know you know, then have the courage to act accordingly.  You deserve the best for you.

Wishing You the Very Best!

Finest Less
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A guy says to the bartender, "A glass of your finest Less, please."

"Less? Never heard of it."

"C'mon, sure you have."

"No, really, we don't stock it. What is it? Some kind of foreign beer?"

"I'm not sure. It was my doctor who mentioned it. He said I should drink Less."

Toward the end of our senior year in high school, we were required to take a CPR course. The classes used the well known mannequin victim, Resusci-Annie, to practice. Typical of most models, this Resusci-Annie was only a torso, to allow for storage in a carrying case.

The class went off in groups to practice. As instructed, one of my classmates gently shook the doll and asked "Are you all right?" He then put his ear over the mannequin's mouth to listen for breathing.

Suddenly he turned to the instructor and exclaimed, "She said she can't feel her legs!"

-----

My ten-year-old granddaughter asked me what a colon was. I explained that it was a part of the body that food goes through before being eliminated.

Then she asked me what a semicolon was. I told her, "It's a colon the size of a truck, with eighteen wheels."

"I'd like the telephone number of the Theater Guild."

"One moment, please. I'm sorry, sir. I have no listing for a Theodore Guild."

"No, no. It isn't a person. It's an organization. It's Theater Guild."

"I told you, sir, I have no listing for a Theodore Guild."

"Not Theodore! Theater! The word is theater! T-H-E-A-T-E-R!"

"That, sir, is not the way Theodore is spelled."

Solution for the Riddle

George is 22 years old.

If John is 33 and that is 3 times the age that George was, that means that George was 11 years old when John was the age that George is today. Therefore, the years that passed from the time George was 11 until today must be equal to the time that passed between John's age then and John's age now. So, we need to find the midpoint between the two ages, 33 and 11, to give us George's age today. So George is 22.
