Bob - we bought a computer at a discounted rate, and had to sign
up with peoplepc as our ISP for three years.  The computer, a
Toshiba is a good one, but the peoplepc isp is horrible - I just
hate it. Techs are no good. Hate to talk about them that way, but
it is the truth. Individuals should be warned of problems like
this. We are and were very naive when we got this computer.

Dottie - that is one of the most complained about problems
brought before the FTC.  When you buy the computer at a
discounted rate, you get locked into a long term arrangement for
ISP services, with severe penalties if you try to cancel.
AOL was doing this for years. If the service is bad, you are
stuck. You should really try to avoid deals like these, as they
have a way of turning out badly.

Be Quiet and Listen!

It is ironic that in the field of sales most of us learn to speak
in order to gain commitment.  Often, that is the worst thing a
sales professional can do.  It is better to listen much more than
you talk.

Before you can listen, you need to learn how to ask a question.
Your questions should be open ended to start a conversation.
In other words, avoid questions that can be answered yes or no.

Think about what you will ask beforehand.  Ask about competitors,
past purchases, and other important issues.  You may want to make
a list of your questions and keep a copy with you.

Make sure you pause as you ask each question so you are clearly
understood.  If you are confused by a reply, you might want to
paraphrase what was said so you are able to understand the issue
in your own words.

Selling demands much time and effort.  However, by learning the
basic skills of listening and asking questions, you can become
very successful.

                        Don't Go For Broke

In the last six months of 2001 many businesses took a direct hit
that rocked the foundation of their financial business security.
Different mentalities have emerged in reaction to the shift in
economy from "go for broke" to "just give up." Rather than dig
the hole deeper or give up the years of hard work you have put
into your business, change the paradigm in thinking. Review your
current business strategy and consider what actions need to take
place to stabilize your business again. Once you have stabilized
the foundation of your business you can begin to grow again.
Consider the following strategies to regain control.

Act...Don't React

The strangest things happen to people when they get scared, but
the worst is the reaction of business people that think their
hard won business is going down hill and they begin to react.
Reaction cause calamities such as the loss of additional much
needed funds as we throw money at any marketing ploy that looks
like it might work. During a time of uncertainly, hold tight to
your funds and take extra measures to research advertising before
making an investment. Learn to take a deep breath and be pro-
active, not reactive to the situation at hand.

Reign In Expenses

Most businesses expend money is areas that are not needed during
difficult times. Although these expenses might bolster a business
image they are not needed for strict survival or stabilization of
the business. If you have luxuries in your business that are not
absolutely necessary now is the time to cut them out. Items like
cable Internet services, high rate cell phone services, (option
for the lower plan), etc.

Strengthen Your Networking

Now is the time to make all those phone calls to business friends
you haven't had time for in the past. Reconnect and start
nurturing the networking process again. Do not, I repeat, do not
advertise your business hardships. Maintain your positive
attitude. Let your business friends know about your plans and
offer them a commission for any business they send your way. Make
it worth their time and they will be worth your time.

Make A Six Month Survival Plan

Give yourself some peace of mind by making a six-month survival
plan. Once you know exactly what you will need to stay on top,
your anxiety will lesson and your creativity will increase.
This is a perfect example of being pro-active instead of
reactive.

Understand The Ebb and Flow of Your Business

Keep exact records of sales week-to-week and month-to-month
every single year. By doing this you will begin to understand
the busy times and slow times of your business. In turn this
will allow you to plan financially for the slow times. Every
business has a slow period during the year, it's important that
you know what yours is in order to plan for the success of your
business.

Diversify Your Marketing Techniques

Do not depend on one marketing avenue to get you through tough
times. Perhaps this one marketing technique has worked for you
in the past, but obviously something has changed, and now so
must you. Make a list of possible marketing avenues and begin
researching which methods are most cost effective in relation
to results.

Get Professional Help If You Need It

Smart business people understand when they need outside help. Do
you? If your business is doing more sinking than swimming it's
time to seek a professional to help you put your business on
stable ground. Many, many businesses have filed bankruptcy when

A downward shift in the economy can cause heart-stopping

                          A Little Levity

12 Resolutions Made (But Not Kept) For The New Year

 1. I will try to figure out why I "really" need 15 e-mail
    addresses.

 2. I will stop sending e-mail to my wife (husband). A phone call
    every now and then would be appreciated

 3. I resolve to work with neglected children -- my own.

 4. I will answer my snail mail with the same enthusiasm with
    which I answer my e-mail.

 5. I will stop sending e-mail, ICQ, Instant Messages and be on
    the phone at the same time with the same person.

 6. I resolve to back up my 12 GB hard drive daily...well, once a
    week...okay, monthly then...or maybe... at least once a year

 7. I will spend less than one hour a day on the Internet. This,
    of course, will be hard to estimate since I'm not a clock
    watcher.

 8. I will stop checking my e-mail at 3:00 in the morning... 4:30
    is much more practical since my friends overseas already had
    time to answer me by then.

 9. When I hear a funny joke I will not reply, "LOL... LOL!"

 10. I will read the manual...  just as soon as I can find it.

 11. I will think of a password other than "password."

 12. I resolve... I resolve to... I resolve to, uh... I resolve

Are You Ready To Make A Difference?

I love the Internet. It's opening doors for so many men and women

House Puts Bucks Behind Cybersecurity

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 400 to 12 to pass a bill
that would earmark $878 million in funding for computer security
research, development, and training. House Science Committee
Chair Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), who sponsored the legislation,
believes that it "will come to be seen as a fundamental turning
point in the nation's approach to cybersecurity."

Other bill boosters include the White House, the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), CompTIA, and the
Information Technology Association of America. IEEE Research and
Development Chair Ron Hira said the bill will benefit initiatives
to bolster commerce and personal privacy as well as deploy
cyberterrorism safeguards.

The money would be split between the National Science Foundation
and the National Institute for Science and Technology, which
would use it to develop new research projects and award grants to
academic-industrial collaborations.

New Drug For Insomniacs

In 1999, a drug called Provigil was approved for use by people
with narcolepsy, a disease that causes sufferers to suddenly and
unpredictably fall asleep. Provigil proved to be an effective
stimulant that kept narcoleptics alert during the day, and had
fewer side effects than other stimulant drugs. The drug company
that markets the drug seems to want to sell more of it; it's
doing research to find out whether Provigil might help people
with insomnia or sleep apnea to feel less sleepy during daylight
hours.

For those who have trouble sleeping well at night and struggle
with sleepiness during the day, this drug may sound like a
godsend. Keep in mind, however, that Provigil's side effects can
include headaches, anxiety, and nausea, and can reduce the
effectiveness of birth control pills. No one knows exactly how
the drug does what it does or what its long-term effects might
be.

If you suffer from insomnia, take some basic steps to improve
sleep quality: don't eat after 6:00 p.m., keep your bedroom dark
and cool, and only use your bedroom for sleep (i.e. don't read or
watch TV in bed). Don't stay up late watching television; try to
go to bed soon after it gets dark and rise with the sun. Stay
completely away from sugar, caffeine, and alcohol for a while to
see whether this helps you to sleep better. In the evening before
bed, sip chamomile tea, take some valerian, or use melatonin
(a milligram held under your tongue until it dissolves) to
achieve better-quality sleep. Better sleep will mean improved
alertness during the day. Also, try to get some exercise every
day to boost your energy during daylight hours and improve
nighttime rest. If your energy still seems low during the day
despite what you consider to be a good night's sleep, you may be
taking on too much in your life, or you may not be eating right
or taking a good-quality multivitamin.

It's possible that daytime sleepiness could reflect a medical
problem that requires a doctor's attention. Try to see a
holistic, complementary, or naturopathic physician who can help
you to design a natural course back to energized good health
