Biz Tips
by Dr. Kevin NunleySmall-Time Advertising
Last week I was in a small town diner when I realized I had spent 15 minutes reading the placemat. It was a paper placemat with an add for the restaurant in the middle and business-card-sized ads for local businesses around the edge. No question about it, this is small-time advertising at its best. Several hundred people sit in the restaurant each day reading the placemats while they wait for their order to arrive.

The Ongoing Transition of Hardware
by Manny ForssettBefore the 1970s the word ‘hardware’ usually meant one of two things: the beautiful chrome handles on your new dresser and the kitchen cabinets, or the hammer, saw, and nails that you purchased at the local hardware store. Then came the computer boom! Hardware took on a new meaning! If all the programming that made a computer work were called software, then the hard box and its components took on the name of hardware.
Hardware became a massive, competitive industry that expanded beyond the largest, most powerful dreams of the 1970s. Made of hundreds of various components that can be added, disconnected or exchanged depending on which features you want, the computer has a versatility that is limited only by ones imagination, budget and, realistically, one’s patience.
However, it wasn’t until the mid-1980s that personal computers started popping up in homes. These personal computers still used the original floppy disk simply because a hard disk was not yet small enough to make portable. More than 75 floppy disks would be needed just to write a book. Yet, despite the need for so many floppy disks, it was still a better alternative to using the bulky typewriter.
A computer is made up of thousands of parts. The software is the heart of the computer where one can find the CPU and other boards. Other components of the computer, which are more familiar to the average consumer, include: a keyboard, mouse, the monitor and speakers. Of course, those are the bare bones of a computer. Today, consumers continually add the newest hardware to enhance their computer’s capability. Printers, scanners, PC cameras, digital cameras, video cameras and joysticks are just a few of the additions consumers purchase for their computers.
After a few years the amazingly huge 10 MB Hard Disk came out for home use, replacing the need for using floppies except for backups. Since 10 MB didn’t really hold all much data, the world of floppies was still lively.
There was a word whispered about in murmurs in computer circles back then: Gigabyte! It meant something so huge in size that the human mind couldn’t quite grasp it. Then it happened. A 100 MB hard disk evolved into a 1 Gigabyte hard disk. People wondered if it could possibly be reliable. And while they wondered, computer stores started selling 10 Gigabyte hard disks. People blinked and the hard disks were 100 Gigabytes.
Originally disks were big, but again, with time, they became smaller and smaller until they can now easily fit in the palm of your hand and still have some room left over. Because of the complexity of the hardware, software has evolved as well. Because of the evolution of software, consumers can now speak their words into the computer instead of typing them, can email others around the world and have those emails read back to them by the computer in any language of the world. Who would have imagined such a thing sixty years ago?
The competition between the hardware manufacturers has resulted in prices dropping and dropping, creating a beautiful opportunity for people of all income levels and all ages to now enjoy a computer in their own home.

Alligator Teeth
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=A tourist was admiring the necklace worn by a local Indian.
"What is it made of?" she asked.
"Alligator's teeth," the Indian replied.
"I suppose," she said patronizingly, "that they mean as much to you as pearls do to us."
"Oh no," he objected. "Anybody can open an oyster."

A woman whose fondness for the good life had taken its toll in added pounds - and girth - was being shown a Jeep by a salesman at an auto dealership.
When the salesman's pitch had run its course, he sought to close with the typical line, "Now what would it take to get you into one of these?"
Looking at the Jeep's high front seat, the woman replied, "Probably a crowbar and a ladder."

Patient: You told me to avoid people who irritate me.

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellCrestor Conundrum
Americans may finally be starting to feel cautious about trying the next new, costly wonder drug. The myth that all drugs that are FDA-approved and available by prescription or in drugstores over the counter must be perfectly safe is going the way of the Easter Bunny. It appears that the advice of Sidney Wolfe, M.D., editor of the highly respected Worst Pills Best Pills News, is the best to follow: wait at least seven years before agreeing to try a newly released drug, unless your doctor can clearly demonstrate to you that it is a breakthrough drug that has clear benefit over older medications. Otherwise, the seven-year gap will allow time for new adverse effects to be discovered and added to labeling.
Eventually, consumer reluctance in the face of inadequately tested blockbuster drugs will help to change the FDA approval process in ways that could help to make drugs safer. Unfortunately, the shady practices that are commonly used by drug makers to push new, potentially patent-protected products through the drug pipeline are likely to die hard or give way to other similarly shady tactics. As long as drug making is a competitive venture, with pharmaceutical giants fighting to win ever-larger market shares, this is bound to be the case.
In the meantime, there’s the Crestor conundrum. Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) is the newest of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, otherwise known as statin drugs. They decrease cholesterol levels by inhibiting the activity of a liver enzyme that makes cholesterol. According to FDA whistleblower David Graham, Crestor is one of five drugs that should raise concern because of safety issues—it has been linked with acute kidney failure and appears to offer a greater risk of rhabdomyolysis, the potentially deadly muscle deterioration that caused the withdrawal of Baycol, another statin drug.
AstraZeneca, the drug’s maker, responded to Graham by publishing an advertisement in several publications that the FDA then called “false or misleading.” Specifically:
• The ad claimed that “A medication can be more effective and just as safe.” The FDA’s problem with this was that this statement minimizes the risks of taking a 40 mg dose of Crestor.• The ad also states that “The FDA has confidence in the safety and efficacy of Crestor.” The FDA objected, saying that this statement suggests that the agency does not think that Crestor poses safety concerns—when, in fact, the FDA does think that there may be safety issues.
According to Christine Hemler Smith, an FDA official, the agency “has been very concerned about Crestor since the day it was approved, and we’ve been watching it very carefully.” Despite these concerns, AstraZeneca stands firm and is currently in the midst of an advertising blitz for the medication, which includes a TV commercial and coupons in print media that offer 15 days’ worth of pills for free.
Bottom line: you don’t need to take this drug. If statins are really necessary for you, try older versions such as Lipitor.
