Make Customers Stop Doubting You

I can always tell when customers are watching their bank accounts more closely.  They start to doubt me and need additional assurance that their money is being well spent.

Here are several ways you can boost customer confidence and get the sale.

Many people are uneasy about buying over the Internet or via email.  Give them your phone number, a convenient time to call, and plan to spend a few minutes getting to know them.  That human bond often sets the customer at ease and gets their order.

Offer a no-risk, money-back guarantee.  For those of us selling through mail order, the commercial code requires a 30 day refund period.  Use that to your benefit, prominently stating your no- risk policy.  Few people will take undue advantage.

Be honest.  No product or service can be 100 percent effective. Tell customers your offer doesn't work for everyone, but you have hundreds of customers (or have talked with many) who have gotten excellent results.

Prospects will be set at ease by your honesty and straight shooting approach.

A Cup of Coffee

Are you one of the millions of people that just can’t get going in the morning without that first cup of coffee?  Does it seem like your day would be incomplete without it?  Or you may be one of us who enjoy coffee at night, or any time during the day, not just in the morning.  With coffee being so popular in the United States it is interesting to know a little history behind the coffee bean.

Discovered in Ethiopia in Eastern Africa, the coffee berries were transported to Arabia for cultivation. However, the popularity of coffee grew in Europe after it was brought on the continent by the Venetian trade merchants and then the Pope declared it a Christian beverage.  The Pope's declaration had a positive effect on the coffee industry and it soon started to boom with coffee spreading almost everywhere.

French infantry introduced coffee to America in the 1700~s by taking care of one plant all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.  Once in America it was transplanted on a Caribbean Island called Martinique.  Within fifty years there were nineteen million trees on this island.

Today, the coffee industry employs more than twenty million people.  The coffee industry is the second largest industry, next to the petroleum industry in terms of international trade.  According to the statistics, there are more than four hundred billion cups of coffee consumed each year.  All over the world coffee appears to be the favorite drink.  In Brazil, over three billion coffee plants are cultivated and harvested.  More than five million people are employed for this purpose.  In the U.S. they have reached the multi billion dollar level on premium specialty coffee.

One thing is for sure coffee has definitely changed since that first cup was served.  We now have a large variety of specialty coffees offered at a number of gourmet coffee houses.  Starbucks is the name of one of these coffee houses that has became famous for its gourmet coffees.  But let’s not forget you can still purchase a cup of coffee at convenience stores, and most fast food restaurants.  When you go to the grocery store you have a choice of instant, fresh grounded, or coffee beans you can ground yourself. Also for those consumers that don’t want or need the caffeine you can also choose a decaf coffee.  Its no wonder coffee is so popular in the fast-paced world we live in today.

Gender Signs

Over the years, my husband and I have usually managed to decode the cute but confusing gender signs sometimes put on restaurant restroom doors (Buoys and Gulls, Laddies and Lassies, etc.), but every so often we get stumped.

Recently my husband wandered off in search of the men's room and found himself confronted by two marked doors. One was labeled "Bronco," and the other was designated "Cactus."

Completely baffled, he stopped a restaurant employee passing by. "Excuse me. I need to use the restroom," he said. Gesturing toward the doors, he asked, "Which one should I use?"

"Actually, we would prefer you to go there," the employee said, pointing to a door down the hall marked MEN. Bronco and Cactus are private dining rooms."

During one "generation gap" quarrel with his parents, young Michael cried, "I want excitement, adventure, money, and beautiful women. I'll never find it here at home, so I'm leaving. Don't try and stop me!"

With that, he headed toward the door. His father rose and followed close behind.

"Didn't you hear what I said? I don't want you to try and stop me."

"Who's trying to stop you?" replied his father. "If you wait a minute, I'll go with you."

Why Are We Surprised When Our Kids Turn To Drugs?

More ominous news about teen drug use hit the headlines at the end of 2004. It was found that while overall use of illicit drugs by teens is falling, the use of the potent painkiller OxyContin (oxycodone) is rising, with 1 of every 20 high school seniors reporting having used the drug in the year 2004.

Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and alcohol were once the drugs parents worried most about. Today, increasing numbers of teens are turning to prescription drugs such as OxyContin, methadone, codeine, Ritalin, and benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium. These drugs are easily accessed through classmates who swipe them from parents’ medicine cabinets. They are addictive and dangerous, particularly when combined with alcohol and with one another. According to Westley Clark, M.D., M.Ph., J.D., the director for substance abuse therapy at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, “Young adults, even teens…do not seem to realize that this misuse can lead to serious problems and addiction.” Some kids even end up dying because they don’t understand that even FDA-approved prescription drugs can kill when misused or used in combination.

The statistics are chilling. In 2000, 11.1 million people reported having used prescription drugs for non-medical purposes. Just under half were between the ages of 12 and 25. In a 2002 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) report, there were 47,594 mentions of oxycodone or hydrocodone in relation to emergency room visits. About ¾ of those visits involved additional drugs.

Parents, you need to sit down with your kids and talk this over. Don’t think a ten-year-old is too young to hear about this. Let them know that these drugs are probably going to be available to them, and that there will be considerable pressure to try them; and let them know that prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can be very dangerous or deadly when misused. Narcotics, for example, can slow the heart to dangerously low rates if taken in overdose or in combination with alcohol or benzodiazepines. Stimulants like Ritalin have been known to cause death when abused, particularly when they are crushed and snorted or injected. And if you happen to have any of these medications in your house, monitor them carefully and flush any that you don’t use down the toilet.
