How Business Buyers Are Different From Consumers

Most of the advertising and marketing we see is directed toward consumers. Yet, much of the money spent around the world is for products and services purchased by businesses. For a very long time, business-to-business transactions made up the lion's share of Internet purchases.

Consumers don't necessarily NEED your product or service. If money is tight or the customer isn't convinced they need it, the consumer can just as easily wait until next month or next year to make the purchase.

Businesses often NEED what you are selling right now. Their immediate profits may depend on having it.

Businesses buyers are more knowledgeable. You will often be selling to a manager or specialist who knows your industry inside and out.

Consumers are in a hurry and aren't always interested in reading long marketing copy. Business buyers generally appreciate all the information you can give them. Long copy is no problem.

How to Regain Control of Your Home Office

For those who are in the business of writing for a living, there are not a lot of places that are conducive to the needs of writing a good article, column, book or other literary production.  More often than not, if the writing is being done from home, there are numerous distractions that can cause delay or, in some cases, failure to meet a specific deadline.  The best way to avoid such a scenario is to designate a particular room in the house as an office, closed to the use of anyone but the writer.

Phone calls, house calls and all the rest of the daily routine are unwanted nuisances when you are trying to concentrate. So make others - friends, family - aware that you will be hard at work during particular hours and that you would appreciate being left alone for whatever issue short of an emergency situation. If you are not alone in the house when you work, perhaps someone else can get the telephone or open the door. If you have the house to yourself while you work then buy a machine to catch your calls and simply ignore the door.

Be sure to keep your office door closed while working and, if necessary, lock the door.  Most family members (or roommates) will respect your private work space, but young children may have the tendency to wander in when they want to have a visit with mommy or daddy.  While you should never make your family members feel alienated by using the office as a constant refuge, they need to be made to understand that you need to have the privacy and necessary quiet in which to work, just as you would have if you were going to a 9-5 job outside of the home.

A schedule of work time is great here, if you can manage to establish one. Your family will soon adjust to the working times, and even any kids will behave as though you really were working outside the home during these hours. Of course, after a certain age, your children will have their own school routines to worry about and this will make things easier.

If you can it is ideal to choose a place to work that is away from the central hub of the home.  For example, in most houses the kitchen and the living room are the rooms most frequently inhabited. However, basements fail as offices as they are too large and open and not usually laid out in a traditional office style.  However, if you do have a room that is out of the way from the general household noise it would be a good idea to choose this one.

It is unlikely that you will be able to eliminate any chance of interruption if you work at home, however these few straightforward rules will help minimize any unnecessary time-consuming issues and help you submit your work on time.

Getting Away

Getting away from their high-stress jobs, a couple spends relaxing weekends in their motor home. When they found their peace and quiet disturbed by well-meaning, but unwelcome, visits from other campers, they devised a plan to assure themselves some privacy.

Now, when they set up camp, they place this sign on the door of their RV: "Insurance agent. Ask about our term-life package."

Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post. "Don't worry," my husband reassured me. "I'll have him trained in no time."

I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained" our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach him a lesson.

The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa!!

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.

I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.

But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.
