A Lesson About Foreclosure

Unfortunately, everyone runs into a time of life when money is tight and juggling finances is a serious challenge. For individuals owning a home, they could be in a position of having the home foreclosed for lack of payment.  If you have found yourself in a compromising position but desperately want to do what you can to save your home, the good news is that avoiding a foreclosure is possible if you know how.

Foreclosure is what happens if you can no longer meet the payment schedule on your home loan. The lending institution repossesses your home and sells it to someone else. There are three options that you should know about. The first one is to try to keep it. The second is to sell it yourself; using the money to repay the loan and any extra fees you’ve accrued. The third option is to let the lender proceed with the foreclosure. It will then be your responsibility to pay any difference between the price they got and what you owe.

The first rule of thumb is to respond to any letters you receive about late payments. The worst thing you can do is just ignore them. Call the number provided and give a detailed explanation to someone as to why you are behind. Remember that a foreclosure is a major undertaking for the mortgage holder as well as you, so they will most likely try to work with you. It costs them money, time and trouble.

A Special Forbearance involves the mortgage company providing you with a temporary reduction or even a suspension of your monthly mortgage payments.  If you have recently lost your job, had a reduction in income, or your living expenses have increased unrepentantly, this option may be ideal.

Another option is a Mortgage Modification.  With this option, your mortgage is refinanced or the term of your loan extended.  The way this program is designed, you have an opportunity to become caught up on payments.  A Partial Claim is another possibility whereby your mortgage company would help you secure an interest free loan from HUD, which helps you bring your mortgage to a current payment status.

Remember, if you fall behind, rather than worry about foreclosure, talk to your mortgage company to see what programs you would qualify for so you can stay in your home. Never ignore the problem, because you likely have several viable options to fix your foreclosure problem.

The Golfer

A golfer hit his drive on the first hole 300 yards right down the middle. When it came down, however, it hit a sprinkler and the ball went sideways into the woods. He was angry, but he went into the woods and hit a very hard 2 iron which hit a tree and bounced back straight at him. It hit him in the temple and killed him.

He was at the Pearly Gates and St. Peter looked at the big book and said, "I see you were a golfer, is that correct?"

"Yes, I am," he replied.

St Peter then said, "Do you hit the ball a long way?"

The golfer replied, "You bet. After all, I got here in 2, didn't I?"

Pharmaceutical Company Comeuppance

TAP Pharmaceutical Products recently had to pay $875 million to settle a case over its prostate cancer drug Lupron; accusers claimed that the company inflated the drug’s price and that it bribed physicians to get them to prescribe it. Soon, the company will be on trial, facing accusations that it paid kickbacks to doctors and hospitals in its efforts to make it a big seller.

According to a story in one of my favorite newsletters, Worst Pills, Best Pills News, federal prosecutors are taking TAP’s sales executives to court because of their roles in Lupron price inflation and bribing of doctors. These doctors got some nice prizes for agreeing to prescribe this medicine, including ski trips and golf outings to beautiful locales. So-called “educational grants” were actually monies handed out to cover the doctors’ bar tabs at lavish cocktail parties. It’s nice to see these greedy drug makers called onto the carpet for their machinations.

Unfortunately, the problem has not ended there. The pharmaceutical industry is fiercely competitive, and drug makers are still driven to extremes to try to get doctors to prescribe their products. Instead of gifts, for example, drug companies might offer doctors large sums of money to act as consultants, pressing them into the role of pushing specific drugs to their colleagues. Research is still powerfully manipulated by pharmaceutical companies, who fund studies performed by doctors that are geared to show their products in the best possible light. Those companies put money in the pockets of researchers who need it to fund their studies. As long as the private pharmaceutical sector is so tied into the research sector, clear and honest independent research on pharmaceutical products will be virtually impossible.
