Ads sometimes don't work. There are a lot of reasons why this happens, but more often than not, we can point to two downfalls that seem to hurt marketing.
Problem one is your ad isn't clear to the people it is talking to. Most of us have words and phrases we use in our industry that make little sense to our customers. Strive to put your ideas in plain everyday language. If you have an industry buzz word, translate it into words everyone uses.
Just as often, the one important benefit that will make people buy gets lost somewhere in the copy. Often when I get a long email message from someone, they'll have the important part in the next to last paragraph. Someone in a hurry wouldn't find it.
Problem two is marketing frequently isn't pointed at the right people. One guy who wanted to recruit members for his MLM opportunity advertised in the daily newspaper. Lots of people read the paper, but very few were interested in network marketing. He would do far better to put his ad in a networking publication or ezine that specializes in his target audience.

Make Your Business More Profitable
by Bob LeducMore sales and more profit. Isn't that what you want from your business? It's not hard to achieve if you follow these 4 simple tips.
1. Keep Adding More New Markets
Every new market you open captures a new layer of sales ...and makes your business more secure. The more markets you serve the less dependent you are on the sales from any one market.
Tip: You can quickly add several profitable new markets to your business by sub-dividing your present market into several narrowly defined niche markets. Then create customized versions of your current advertising that offers specific solutions to the unique needs of each niche market.
2. Continually Add Something New
Every time you add something new to your business you create additional opportunities to close sales. For example, by just adding one new product or service to the list of those you already offer you create 3 new selling opportunities:
1) It attracts new prospects who are not interested your current products and services.
2) It generates activity from existing customers who want to find out about your new product.
3) It enables you to create attractive combination packages of two or more items ...which also produces some bigger sales for you.
Tip: Even something as simple as adding something new to your web site creates more selling opportunities for you ...by attracting both new visitors and repeat visitors.
3. Find Some Ways to Generate Publicity
Publicity is what you get when somebody else promotes (or you get them to promote) your business. It creates more credibility than advertising - and generates sales without an advertising expense.
Look for some ways you can generate some publicity for your business. For example, contact non-competing businesses that serve customers in your market. Offer to publicize their products and services to your customers in exchange for their publicizing your services to their customers.
Tip: Don't expect non-paid publicity to replace your paid advertising. Instead, use publicity to supplement your advertising. You control where and when your advertising appears - and what it says. But you cannot control where or when you get publicity ...or how effective it is.
4. Implement a System to Promote Customer Referrals
Referrals from customers are easier to sell than cold prospects. And they don't cost you anything. Unfortunately, most customers don't volunteer referrals. You have to ask for them.
A simple, passive way to ask for referrals is to use a brief customer survey. Send it to customers by postal mail, email, or post it on your web site. The survey I use only asks 3 questions:
1) What did you like best about our (product or service)?
2) What can we do to improve the value of our (product or service) for you?
3) Who else do you know that wants to (state the benefit provided by your product or service)?
The first 2 questions focus your customer's attention on the benefits they got from you. Customers will be more likely to provide referrals at the 3rd question when you have them thinking about the value of those benefits.
Tip: Pay attention to the answers you get to the first question. It often generates a response you can use as a testimonial (with your customer's permission).
More sales and more profit. If that's what you want from your business, start by following these 4 simple tips. They produce results quickly ...and don't require much of your time or money.

A Little Humor
The Hobo
=-=-=-=-=-A hobo came up to the front door of the neat looking farmhouse and knocked gently on the door. When the owner answered, the hobo asked, "Please, sir, could you give me something to eat? I haven't had a good meal in several days."
The owner said, "I have made a fortune in my lifetime by supplying goods for people. I never give anything away for nothing. However, if you go around the back, you will see a gallon of paint and a clean paint brush. If you will paint my porch, I will give you a good meal."
So the hobo went around back and a little later he again knocked on the door. The owner said, "Finished already? Good. Come on in. Sit down. The cook will bring your meal right in."
The hobo said, "Thank you very much, sir. But there is something that I think you should know. It's not a Porch, it's a BMW."

by Dr. Earl MindellFDA Warns Overuse Of Pain Medicines
At 10 to 15 times the cost of older pain medications, drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, the original drugs in the COX-2 class, are now believed to have been massively over-prescribed in the years before cardiovascular warnings hit the press. A study in an early 2005 issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine reported that both of these drugs were prescribed to millions of patients who would have benefited just as much from older pain drugs. According to the authors of the study—a Stanford professor and a professor at the University of Chicago—only patients expected to need long-term pain relief therapy should have been prescribed the COX-2 inhibitors. By their estimation, 73 percent of the millions who were given a COX-2 inhibitor prescription did not meet this important criterion. They also point out that the drugs were given to patients with congestive heart failure, and to patients with liver or kidney dysfunction—all patient subgroups with especially high risk of cardiovascular, kidney, or liver side effects known to be a concern with the COX-2 class.
In the wake of the Vioxx frenzy comes another warning about an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug): this time, about a drug called naproxen (sold as Aleve over the counter and as Naprosyn and Anaprox by prescription). A study that was designed to determine whether Aleve or Celebrex could delay or prevent Alzheimer’s disease onset found that Aleve appeared to raise heart attack and stroke risk.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned consumers that painkiller drugs are not to be taken lightly, despite the fact that they are so widely available. We have been advised by the FDA to avoid taking any pain medication for more than ten days in a row without consulting a physician. We have also been advised to avoid the COX-2 drug class if possible, in the short-term, so that the potential problems that have come up in recent studies can be fully understood and the impact on the overall safety of this drug class can be measured. All in all so far, it really doesn’t look like these so-called “super aspirins” are so super; they are no more effective than older, non-COX-2-specific NSAIDs.
So many individuals swallow over-the-counter painkillers daily or more than once daily to treat headaches, muscle aches, or other mild symptoms that are, nine times out of ten, related to stressful, unhealthy lifestyles and poor dietary choices. Some people genuinely need these drugs to treat occasional or chronic pain, and for them, it’s important to weigh benefits against risks with the aid of a trusted medical professional.
If you suffer from chronic pain or inflammation for which you use painkillers, see whether an anti-inflammatory diet and supplements can help you to wean yourself off of these drugs. Eating three servings of omega-3 rich fish a week, along with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, is a good start. Avoid large amounts of fatty meats and dairy products. Use olive or canola oils for cooking. And avoid sugars and processed flour, both of which enhance inflammation. Look into biofeedback, guided imagery, relaxation techniques, and other mind-body therapies to help you cope with pain.
