A Little Humor

The New York Times, among other papers, has published a new Hubble photograph of distant galaxies colliding.

Of course, astronomers have had pictures of colliding galaxies for quite some time now, but with the vastly improved resolution provided by the Hubble Space Telescope, you can actually see the lawyers rushing to the scene...

Someone in our neighborhood put a huge sofa out by the curb for trash collection. Since it was in good shape, many motorists slowed down for a look. But when they saw how enormous it was, they'd leave.

Eventually a compact car pulled up, and two men got out. "This I've got to see," I thought. They removed the cushions, turned the sofa upside down, and shook it hard. Then they picked up all the coins that tumbled out and drove off.

I was at the drugstore and noticed a young male cashier staring at the pretty girl in front of me. Her total came to $16.42, and after handing over a $100 bill, she waited for change.

"Here you go," said the cashier, smiling as he returned the proper amount. "Have a great day!"

Now I placed my items on the counter. The tally was $32.79, and I too gave the cashier a $100 bill.

"I'm sorry, Ma'am. We can't accept anything larger than a fifty," he told me, pointing to a sign stating store policy.

"But you just accepted that last girl's hundred," I reasoned.

"I had to," he said. "It had her phone number on it."

Five doctors went duck hunting one day. Included in the group were a GP, a pediatrician, a psychiatrist, a surgeon and a pathologist. After a time, a bird came winging overhead. The first to react was the GP who raised his shotgun, but then hesitated.

"I'm not quite sure it's a duck," he said, "I think that I will have to get a second opinion." And of course by that time, the bird was long gone.

Another bird appeared in the sky thereafter. This time, the pediatrician drew a bead on it. He too, however, was unsure if it was really a duck in his sights and besides, it might have babies. "I'll have to do some more investigations," he muttered, as the creature made good its escape.

Next to spy a bird flying was the sharp-eyed psychiatrist. Shotgun shouldered, he was more certain of his intended prey's identity.

"Now, I know it's a duck, but does it know it's a duck?" The fortunate bird disappeared while the fellow wrestled with this dilemma.

Finally, a fourth fowl sped past and this time the surgeon's weapon pointed skywards. BOOM!! The surgeon lowered his smoking gun and turned nonchalantly to the pathologist beside him.

"Go see if that was a duck, will you?"

Cold Medicines

You may have noticed that some stores are keeping cold medicines in locked displays. If you’ve had occasion to buy more than two or three packs of cold pills, such as Sudafed, you may have found that this is no longer permitted. These new restrictions on cold medicines are due to a scourge that is believed to be at the root of countless brutal robberies and other violent crimes.

It’s a drug variously known as crank, ice, crystal, speed, and methamphetamine (commonly referred to as “meth”). And it can be made at home in a bathtub, using one of roughly 100 recipes involving cold medicines, along with rubbing alcohol, starter fluid, drain cleaners, lithium batteries, matches, and paint thinner. People are making crystal meth in hotel rooms, in rural shacks, in comfortable suburban dwellings. Meth labs commonly explode, and the manufacture of the drug creates highly toxic fumes. Child neglect is a common offshoot of meth abuse. An article in the LA Times states that “in Oregon over the last two years, virtually every case where the state permanently took children away from their parents involved meth.”

When addicts can’t get any more meth, or at least the ingredients they need to make it, they may turn violent. In some out-of-the-way parts of the country, meth addicts are devastating what used to be close-knit communities in their efforts to get to their next hit.

Government officials are seeking to restrict sales of cold medicines to try to stem their flow into meth labs, but it’s easy for a determined addict to drive from store to store to buy as many as they need. Some states have moved to sell cold medicines as a Schedule 5 narcotic, meaning that it can only be dispensed by a pharmacist. Computer programs designed to track all purchases of methamphetamine are up and coming. Unfortunately, recovered meth addicts warn that such restrictions could lead to even more violent behavior as addicts try to get what they need. A black market would likely develop, both for cold medicines and for methamphetamines, from overseas sources.

Some states are shying away from the strict regulatory approach, instead advocating addiction prevention and education. To their credit, the company that makes Sudafed—the most popular over-the-counter cold drug—is not opposed to strict controls on sales of their product.

It will be interesting to see where this goes. Addiction to dangerous, mind-altering drugs is a serious problem in modern society—an extreme manifestation of the “pill for every ill” mentality. And let’s not forget that Ritalin and other stimulant drugs, widely sanctioned for pediatric use, are also a form of amphetamines, and are widely abused.
