Biz Tips
by Dr. Kevin NunleyMarketing a Small Town Business
A lot of people who read these articles live in small towns. Smaller communities are great places to live, but they often offer fewer opportunities to earn an income. People in rural communities have long known their best chance to succeed can be in owning and operating their own business.
How do you market a small town business (or a neighborhood business in a city--which works much the same way)?
Start with the oldest and most effective form of marketing known. Talk to people. Smile, look them in the eye, and tell them about your business and how what you sell can help them. You don't have to do a hard sell, but give people you know or meet the lowdown on what you've been up to. In small towns, that kind of local, personal information is as important as the morning headlines.
Talk to the editor of the nearest newspaper about doing a feature story on you and your business. Make a point of noting the interesting or helpful information you can provide for the article.
Check the price of radio and cable TV ads. It's not unusual to buy these commercials for a few dollars each in small communities.

VOIP Phone Services - A Quick Overview
by Fawn RawsonVonage, Lingo, VoiceWing, CallVantage - if these names aren't familiar to you yet, they will be before long. They are the top four current VOIP (voice over internet protocol) service providers.
Two of them, Lingo and Vonage, are new companies in the business of communications. The other two are new services offered by communications giants Verizon and AT&T. All of them promise to give you unlimited long distance and local phone service for prices ranging from $24.95 to $49.95 a month.
Vonage isn't the only VoIP service, but it is the most well- known, thanks to an enormous marketing push. According to a spokesperson from Vonage, their business is growing at the rate of 1500 new subscribers a month. Those new subscribers are enjoying unlimited local and long distance phone service for as little as $39.95 a month for business service and $24.95 monthly for residential. Is VoIP phone service a good choice for you? The answers to a few simple questions can help you decide.
What equipment do I need to take advantage of VoIP phone? You'll need either a DSL or high-speed cable internet service and a telephony device - or the 'box'. Vonage provides you with the box when you sign up for an account with them. Simply plug your phone and your computer into to box, and you're ready to go.
Is VoIP reliable phone service? VoIP has been around as a low-cost way to make phone calls from your computer for a lot of years. In general, your VoIP service will work as long as your internet connection is up and running and, your electrical service is on. It won't operate during a power outage, and losing your DSL or cable will also put your phone out of service. If your internet carrier goes down even occasionally, you'll want to keep regular phone service at least as a backup - or get an uninterruptible power supply.
But is it any good? Sound quality, reliability, the works? From all reports, the sound quality and reception is akin to that you can expect from a good cell phone. You'll have occasional drops and hiccups, but no worse than you'd see if you were using a cell and moving.
Can I use my VOiP phone number when I'm traveling? In a word, yes. You'll have your phone with you wherever you plug in your 'box', whether it's your living room or a hotel room in Naples Florida.
However, the technology advances every day. Vonage, the acknowledged independent leader in the field, reports new subscribers at the rate of 1500 per month. That sort of growth sparks further advances nearly every day. Expect that VOIP will advance at least as quickly as the acceptance of cell phones as a fact of modern life.
Can I use multiple phone extensions with my VoIP? It's tricky, but it's doable. The easiest way is to use a cordless phone with multiple handsets. Again, it's another area that's being worked on, so expect that to change over time.
Where can I find out more about VoIP phone service? You can check the home pages of these VoIP providers: Vonage (www.vonage.com) At&T CallVantage (www.callvantage.com) Lingo (www.lingo.com) Verizon Voicewing (www.voicewing.com)

A Little Humor
Towel Head
=-=-=-=-=-=-=Recently I received a warning about the use of this politically incorrect term, so please note: We all need to be more sensitive in our choice of words.
I have been informed the Islamic terrorists, who hate our guts and want to kill us, do not like to be called "Towel Heads" since the item they wear on their heads is not actually a towel, but in fact, a small folded sheet.
Therefore, from this point forward, please refer to them "Sheet Heads."
Thank you for your support and compliance on this delicate matter.

Driving down the highway one day, I saw this slogan on the back of a well-known trucking company's vehicle - We Always Go the Extra Mile.
Then I noticed another phrase scrawled in the dirt just below it -

A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."
And for plenty of good reasons, since:
1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. it is a major component in acid rain
3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. it contributes to erosion
6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patientsHe asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
Forty-three (43) said yes, six (6) were undecided, and only one (1) knew that the chemical was H2O — plain old water
The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"
He feels the conclusion is obvious.

As a court clerk, I am well-versed in the jury-selection process. First a computer randomly selects a few hundred citizens from the entire county to report for jury duty on a particular day. Then another computer assigns 40 of those present to a courtroom. Then the 40 names are placed in a drum, and a dozen names are pulled.
During jury selection for one trial, the judge asked potential Juror No. 1 if there was any reason he could not be a fair and impartial juror.
"There may be," he replied. "Juror No. 12 is my ex-wife, and if we were on the same jury, I guarantee we would not be able to agree on anything."
Both were excused.

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellAlcohol Benefits vs. Liabilities
The reports in the media on the potential benefits of moderate alcohol consumption are quite compelling. It appears to significantly lower the risk of heart attack, osteoporosis, and mental decline. On the other hand are reports that the same moderate alcohol consumption, or consumption that goes beyond moderation, can increase risk of breast, oral, esophageal, and colon cancers. And, also weighing on the “con” side is the fact that doctors don't generally advise their patients to start drinking a glass of wine, a beer, or a shot of whiskey a day if they don't do so already. If it's so good for our health, why aren't they prescribing it along with other lifestyle changes like exercise and multivitamins?
The main reason why doctors don't recommend drinking to non-drinkers is the hairy problem of alcohol addiction. It's impossible to know which patients might allow their drinking to get out of hand and become addicted, who might end up in car accidents, or who may end up with cirrhosis of the liver because of their M.D.'s advice to drink and be merry. Doctors have enough problems with lawsuits without having to worry about this extra bit of potential mayhem.
But the truth remains that responsible drinking—again, that's one to two drinks a day—reduces heart attack risk 37 percent (in men who drink 5-7 days a week), decreases diabetes risk 34 percent, lowers heart attack risk in diabetics by up to 60 percent, reduces stroke risk by 40 to 60 percent, and reduces dementia risk by 42 percent. One study involving over 80,000 women found that at least a half-serving of alcohol a day lowered their heart attack risk by 52 percent. Women who drink six or seven alcoholic drinks a week have significantly higher bone density than non-drinkers.
When you weigh all the risks and benefits, it looks like the optimal benefit-to-risk ratio comes from consuming one-half to one serving of alcohol a day. Red wine is still the superstar, with its rich stores of resveratrol. If you do not currently consume alcoholic beverages and wish to start, use great care not to let drinking get out of hand. If you have a history of alcohol problems, it's probably best to seek health benefits elsewhere and avoid the booze.
