Keyword In Your Title

Recently I spent a lot of time looking up competitors in major search engines. By far the biggest factor in determining who got listed in the top ten of every search engine was this: put your main keyword--the one people will use to search for you--as the FIRST word in your title.

If you haven't done a lot of web design, the title is that line of text that appears in a little box at the top or bottom of your browser. It goes in the HTML code near the top of your page.

For example, if I were going to put up a page on writing keywords and wanted it listed high on search engines, I would write it: keyword in your title gives you top search engine listings

Notice I don't capitalize the K in keyword. Search engines will match the way you write the word to the way users type the word when they're searching for you. keyword is different from Keyword is different from KEYWORD. Most people search using terms typed in all small letters.

Looking for A Great Mortgage Deal
by Susan Faireweathers

For most people, taking out a mortgage is a scary thing. Generally, people take out one or two loans in their entire lives and this makes people nervous about asking questions. When you are ready to buy your first home, keep in mind the company loaning you the money is going to profit from your payments. Interest is the price of borrowed money. Because you are paying for a service, you have every right to know all terms and conditions before deciding to go through with the deal.

When shopping for tomatoes we don't generally buy the first tomato we squeeze. When looking for a loan you shouldn't take the first loan you see either without checking others. Checking all your options when buying something is the surest way of getting the best deal to be had. So, when searching for a place to borrow money from, why not check the competition's offer as well?

There are several terms and conditions commonly compared when weighing the various lenders. Lender’s fees and interest are two of the most often touted terms that lenders use to attract customers. You should consider both before you make a deal. Depending on the amount and length of the loan, the interest rate could be very expensive. If you’re planning to take out a large mortgage, you’ll find that you pay a significant amount in interest over the life of the loan.

Upfront fees are usually not important in long term mortgages, but be cautious when a company ask you to pay an application fee. Remember, the guaranteed loan does not exist, if you pay an application fee of several hundred dollars only to find you don't meet the company's criteria, you won't be happy.

Another item to consider is the company you’re thinking of doing business with. If you’re looking at an online company and have never heard of them, be sure to check them out thoroughly. Make sure the company has a physical location and history, this way you can be sure it's not a teenager running a scam. If you are faced with two offers almost identical but one is from a well know, reputable company. Consider the added security of doing business with a well established company.

A Little Humor

Know Your Math!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Rick, fresh out of accounting school, went to a interview for a good paying job. The company boss asked various questions about him and his education, but then asked him, "What is three times seven?"

"22," Rick replied. After he left, he double-checked it on his calculator (he *knew* he should have taken it to the interview!) and realized he wouldn't get the job.

About two weeks later, he got a letter that said he was hired for the job! He was not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, but was still very curious. The next day, he went in and asked why he got the job, even though he got such a simple question wrong. The boss shrugged and said, "Well, you were the closest."

I was on a panel for prospective jury duty. The first lawyer questioning us began right off as an intimidating showman.

After several questions, he asked, "Do any of you here today dislike lawyers?" There was an awkward silence.

Before the pause became too long, the judge announced, "I do."

Many years ago my wife was to knitting what Tiger Woods is to golf. She designed exotic patterns with ease. There was an occasion when we had lunch in a real Chinese restaurant (only one person spoke partial English, all menus were in Chinese). When she saw the hand-written menu she was so impressed with the calligraphy she tucked the menu in her purse. Some months later I saw the result, a stunning white sweater with the Chinese symbols hand-stitched down the front.

She received compliments galore until one cocktail party when we met a distinguished Chinese physician who asked my wife where she got the symbols. He then wanted to know if she knew what they meant.

"I'm afraid to ask," she said, "but tell me anyway."

Even she had to laugh when he told her they read, "This is a cheap dish--but good."

A three-year-old boy went with his dad to see a new litter of kittens. On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother, "There were two boy kittens and two girl kittens."

"How did you know that?" his mother asked.

"Daddy picked them up and looked underneath," he replied. "I think it's printed on the bottom.

Health Tip of the Week

Drug Ads Cause Over-Prescribing

If I had a dollar for every time a drug company executive has spouted the usual nonsense about direct-to-consumer (DTC) drug ads helping to prevent under-prescription of effective treatments, I’d probably have enough to take my wife out for a night on the town by now. They are less likely to be convincing now that an intriguing new study on the subject has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Middle-aged white female actresses were given specialized training so that they could go into a doctor's office and display symptoms that exactly matched the diagnostic criteria for one of two psychological complaints: “adjustment disorder,” a mild form of depression that follows a stressful life event and rarely requires antidepressants at the first doctor’s visit; or major depression, for which drugs are more often prescribed right off the bat. The actresses were instructed to either ask for no drug at all; to ask for a drug, but not to specify which one they wanted; or to mention that they had seen a TV ad for Paxil and wondered whether that drug might help them.

Ten percent of the actresses who pretended to have adjustment disorder and made no request for any drug walked out of the doctor’s office with an antidepressant prescription. Of those portraying adjustment disorder and making a general request for an antidepressant, 39 percent were prescribed a drug for depression. And those who asked for Paxil specifically? Fifty-five percent were given an antidepressant prescription (not necessarily Paxil).

The actresses who displayed symptoms of major depression and made a general request for a drug got an antidepressant 76 percent of the time—and only three percent of them got Paxil. But, of the women who supposedly had major depression who asked specifically for Paxil, 27 percent got it.

The University of California, Davis researchers who performed the study came away with the conclusion that DTC ads for drugs dramatically boost prescribing—even for people who don't necessarily need drugs in the first place. Unfortunately, the DTC ad cat is not likely to go back in the bag any time soon; it's just too lucrative for the powerful pharmaceutical companies. One expert made a recommendation to delay DTC ads for new drugs until they've been on the market for three years. This makes sense, since usually post-approval adverse events are discovered during that time.

The take-home message: don't go to your doctor asking about a drug you saw advertised. You may end up prompting them to give you a drug you don't need. Assume that you won't need one, and do all you can to avoid taking a drug for which you can use natural alternatives. And if you do need a drug, do your homework to find out whether an older, cheaper, more time-tested drug in the same class can benefit you as much as new ones that are aggressively advertised.
