Turn Failure Into Success

One of the reasons why huge fortunes have been made in California's Silicon Valley is failure is no big deal.

Among the thousands of Internet start-ups, many are bound to fail. Those caught in bad deals simply jump to a new idea and try again. Even while we are hearing of one dot-com failure after another, there are big new websites popping up.

AOL founder Steve Case says the harder they fall the bigger they become. Case is convinced from his personal experience that major failures sharpen a company, bring new knowledge, and help the firm to come back strong.

Here are some ways to brainstorm for new ideas after an idea, product, or service turns out to be a disappointment.

Find someone outside your circle to look through your failure and see where things tripped up. Often a fresh view can give you clues you hadn't thought of.

Take a long look at your marketing. Does the average customer understand it? Is there a way to refocus it for a stronger appeal?

Even when business is going well and sales are mounting, take time to look for things that could challenge your success.

How To Improve Your Sales Copy To Get More Sales

A few small changes in your sales copy can produce a big increase the number of sales you get from your web pages and sales letters. Here are 12 simple things you can do to improve the effectiveness of your sales copy -- and increase your sales.

1. Make sure every part of your message focuses on the customer. Convert anything about you or your company into a customer benefit. For example, replace "14 years of experience" with "pleasing customers just like you for over 14 years".

2. Write your message the way you would write to one person. Many people will read your sales copy. But each person will read it individually. Effective sales copy makes each reader feel like you are writing personally to him or her.

3. Communicate in simple and informal language. Replace words like "originate" with "start" and "receive" with "get". Use active words in the present tense to grab your prospective customer's attention and hold their interest. People stop reading if they begin to feel bored.

4. Convert technical words and phrases into common words. Use words every prospective customer will clearly understand without stopping to think.

5. Replace general words and phrases with specific descriptions. For example, replace a phrase like "get fast results" with "our new clients average 9 percent more profit in the first 60 days".

6. Divide long paragraphs into 2 or more short paragraphs. People read short paragraphs because they look easy to read. But they skim (or skip) long paragraphs because they look like a challenge.

7. Include some bulleted or numbered lists to make your message:

** Visually attractive
** Easier to read
** More clearly understood

8. Don't overdo the attention getters. Too much bold type, underlining or all upper case letters makes your message harder to read. Use them sparingly to highlight important benefits or features.

9. Eliminate anything cute, clever or humorous. It diverts the reader's attention away from your message.

10. Keep your message positive and upbeat. Positive copy usually produces better results than negative copy ...except in politics.

11. Make sure your message flows smoothly. Readers should be able to visualize what you're saying without noticing the words you're using to say it. Keep them engrossed in your message.

12. Avoid sensation and hype. They lower your believability and cause you to lose sales. Tone down any claims that sound exaggerated -- even if they are true.

Compare the sales copy you are using on your web pages and sales letters with the 12 strategies on this list. Revise your copy to implement those you overlooked. You'll enjoy an immediate increase in the number of sales they produce for you. Then save this list and use it as a guideline the next time you create (or pay someone else to create) new sales copy.

A Little Humor

Last Wishes

A woman was talking to her friends about her husband who had passed away.

When her husband was on his death bed, and he told her that he had three envelopes in his desk drawer that would "take care" of all of the arrangements. Well, he died shortly thereafter, so the wife opened the drawer and there were 3 envelopes just like he said.

One the first envelope it said "for the casket". There was $5,000.00 in the envelope, so she bought him a very nice casket.

The second envelope said "for the expenses" and had $4,000.00 in it so she paid all the bills from the funeral.

The third envelope said "for the stone" and had $3,000.00 in it. She then held her hand out to her friends and said, "Isn't it Beautiful!!!"

At a prestigious university there is a clear hierarchy that outlines how long one was to wait for a class to begin if the professor were absent. A full professor rated fifteen minutes. An associate only ten. A mere instructor was expected to be on time, if not early. This system worked only one way, however; and students were afforded no such grace.

It was to be expected, therefore, that one professor, the foremost authority in his field by his own admission, would register distinct annoyance when a student, just out of military service, was late for class for the third morning running.

"Tell me," the professor began, "exactly what did they say in the Army when you sauntered in late like this?"

"Well," mused the unperturbed young man... "first they saluted, then they asked, 'How are you this morning, sir?'"

The new family in the neighborhood overslept and their six-year-old daughter missed her school bus.

The father, though late for work himself, had to drive her. Since he did not know the way, he said that she would have to direct him to the school.

They rode several blocks before she told him to turn the first time, several more before she indicated another turn. This went on for 20 minutes - but when they finally reached the school, it proved to be only a short distance from their home.

The father, much annoyed, asked his daughter why she'd led him around in such a circle.

The child explained, "That's the way the school bus goes, Daddy. It's the only way I know."

A young preacher was asked by the local funeral director to hold a grave-side burial service at a small local cemetery for someone with no family or friends.

The preacher started early but quickly got himself lost, making several wrong turns. Eventually, a half-hour late, he saw a backhoe and its crew, but the hearse was nowhere in sight, and the workmen were eating lunch.

The diligent young pastor went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place.

Taking out his book, he read the service. Feeling guilty because of his tardiness, he preached an impassioned and lengthy service, sending the deceased to the great beyond in style.

As he was returning to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say: "I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years and I ain't never seen anything like that."

Lignans For Cancer Prevention

Lignans, a type of soluble fiber that can be absorbed through the walls of the intestines, are gaining attention in the world of nutritional research. It appears that they may help to prevent hormonally-linked cancers, including prostate, ovarian, uterine, and breast cancers.

Epidemiological research suggests that people who eat diets high in lignans (translation: high in vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, with the highest levels found in flaxseeds) have lower rates of hormone-dependent cancers. The relationship appears particularly strong between high lignan intake and decreased prostate cancer risk.

When you eat foods high in lignans, the lignan precursors they contain are transformed by friendly intestinal bacteria into chemicals like enterodiol and enterolactone. Like the health-promoting genistein and daidzein found in soy, these chemicals are phytoestrogens. They block the binding of growth-promoting, cancer-accelerating chemicals (xenoestrogens) and any excess of the body's natural estrogens (which are also powerfully growth-promoting).

Lignans may be especially good for aging men with BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) or who are at risk for prostate cancer. The ratio of testosterone to estrogen changes in men as they grow older, and a higher proportion of estrogen has been implicated in both of these prostate conditions. Blocking the binding of that estrogen excess to the prostate could be a valuable preventive measure. Lignans also are believed to block the action of aromatase enzymes, which transform testosterone into estrogens and increase their activity as a man ages—and that transforms testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, the form of the hormone linked to prostate enlargement and male pattern baldness.

As if this weren't convincing enough, studies of flaxseed supplementation in animals and humans show that lignans slow the growth of prostate and breast cancers—possibly in part due to their inhibitory effect on angiogenesis, where tumors grow their own blood vessels.

I don't know about you, but looking into this matter made me even more determined to find ways to fit three teaspoons of flax into my life every day. I buy whole seeds and grind them as needed in a designated coffee grinder, and I add the ground seeds to yogurt, smoothies, and oatmeal. If you choose to use a lignan supplement, find one made from whole flax seeds, not just oil with lignans added to it.
