Your Company Backgrounder

If you really want to impress media, include a company backgrounder when you send them a press release.

Your backgrounder tells a reporter all the who-what-why-where-when about your company. This may be the additional information a reporter, editor, or producer really needs to understand just how good a story your business can be.

A backgrounder should include a rundown on the market or opportunity your company goes after. It should also contain a history of you and your firm. Tell how you got started and why you do what you do (that's usually the part that gives a story its interest).

Put in a products section that lists and explains you major products and services. You might also spend some space discussing your overall industry, including a few facts about your competitors. This is especially helpful if you suspect editors don't know much about your industry.

Top your backgrounder off with bios of your management team.

Avoid the home based business scams and find a
legitimate home business!

Nowadays, there are so many scams around! People who take advantage of innocent people since they know so many of us want to work from home.

Remember:  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!  But, you need to know more than that if you are to truly avoid getting ripped off.

I think it's good advice to give when I say, AVOID anything that talks about stuffing envelopes, pyramid schemes, and people that say you can make $2,512.16 cents working in your pajamas in the next 24 hours etc.  Yes, you've heard about these golden opportunities before, I'm sure.  Now there may be some legitimate stuffing envelope opps out there, but most are just a way to get your money and give you a list of companies that might pay you to stuff envelopes, but they don't give you the actual opportunity!  Usually the information you're given is to place the same type of ad yourself.

Don't pay for lists of companies that provide work at home.  If somebody needs an employee, it's up to them to advertise where people can find the opportunity, and not where people have to pay to see the opportunity.  These lists are usually a list of companies straight from your phone book and these companies have no idea they are even on a list that has been sold to you!

If anybody tries to pressure you into joining a multi-level marketing company, take the time to think about it and make sure it is a reputable business opportunity that you even want to consider joining.  Don't let yourself be pressured into anything.  A lot of these are legitimate, but some are not.

Ask for references, testimonials etc.  Check there have been no complaints against the company by checking with the Better Business Bureau etc.   Most larger businesses do belong to this association.  Also, check with the National Fraud Information Center http://www.fraud.org  You can also check http://www.groups.google.com and see from the newsgroup postings if anybody has reported a scam.

The US Chamber of Commerce now apparently has more members than any other small business association.  This can be an important resource when it comes to your business.  They offer members all kinds of advice about starting and maintaining a business, and even have workshops you can go to.  They also help their members get discounts on various products and services, from office supplies to health insurance.

Look around your area for other small business associations before joining the Chamber of Commerce.  There may be other associations better suited to your needs.

The SBA (Small Business Association) has been around since 1953. http://www.sba.gov/  They have helped provide many small companies with business loans and other professional advice.  Definitely worth checking out their website. http://www.score.org/findscore/  This is an outstanding association.

The SCORE Association is a national nonprofit organization. SCORE’s 10,500 volunteers provide small business counseling and training through a network of 389 chapters, 800 branches and its Web site is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

There are legitimate work at home opportunities available, but you must do diligent research before succumbing to any of them, especially the ones that seem too good to be true.

A Little Humor

A few months after Tom and I were married during World War II, he was shipped off to Pearl Harbor. In one of his first letters, he wrote, "I'm going to have a Navy battleship tattooed on my chest."

Though I was dismayed, instead of pleading I wrote back, simply, "Send me a picture of your tattoo and I'll have a duplicate put on my chest."

We have been married for 51 years. Neither one of us has a tattoo.

One afternoon, I was in the backyard hanging the laundry when an old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. But when I walked into the house, he followed me, sauntered down the hall and fell asleep in a corner. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back.

He resumed his position in the hallway and slept for an hour. This continued for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: "Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap."

The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with ten children - he's trying to catch up on his sleep."

Latest News On Alzheimer’s Prevention

Alzheimer’s may be the only illness that inspires more terror than cancer. Unlike cancer, which can be treated (albeit with highly toxic agents that can do more harm than good), Alzheimer’s has no treatments that do anything more than slow its progression slightly. This is definitely one to prevent, if at all possible.

The research indicates that Alzheimer’s prevention involves three strategies: 1) dietary improvements; 2) regular physical activity; and, 3) regular mental activity. A summary:

Dietary improvements. The evidence strongly suggests that the same risk factors are at the root of both heart disease and Alzheimer’s. It follows that a heart-protective, anti-inflammatory, whole-foods diet will also protect the brain. Plenty of colorful vegetables, oily fish, nuts, and brightly colored berries are all mainstays of Alzheimer’s prevention. Blueberries appear to be especially protective. A glass of wine, a beer, or a shot of liquor a day also appears to help keep the brain functioning well. Supplements such as vitamin E, alpha-lipoic acid, and ginkgo biloba may also help.

Physical activity. Research shows that regular, brisk exercise—such as walking, jogging, swimming, and aerobic dance—can help prevent Alzheimer’s, or at least delay its onset.

Mental activity. Crossword puzzles, “jumbles,” and other brain-testing activities have been found to help preserve clear thinking and memory in aging people. Classes, reading, and generally remaining engaged, active, and committed to community or causes also help. Particularly good are classes that integrate mental and physical, such as ballroom dance or tai chi. And, turn off the TV! Research shows that Alzheimer’s risk rises 30 percent for each additional hour per day of TV-watching. This is probably due not to direct effects of TV on the brain. More likely, excessive television time is a marker for other unhealthy, couch-potato behaviors. Also, if you’re glued to the tube, you’re probably not engaging in any activity that will boost your brainpower.
