Biz Tips
by Dr. Kevin NunleyGet The Most From Creative People
Your marketing will look and work better if you get good creative people involved. An experienced or gifted designer can turn your logo or site look into something special. A good writer can make your web copy, sales letter, ad, or radio spot sing and sizzle.
I've spent most of my life working with "creatives." Here are a few tips I've learned.
* Pay more for an experienced designer or writer. While they may charge you more per hour or job, they will get the job done right and often much faster. You save money in the end.
* If you can't afford a seasoned pro, get a college student or someone who recently graduated from college. They often have a mind full of newly-learned, cutting-edge ideas, and you can't beat their enthusiasm.
* Give a creative person their head. Don't micro-manage every detail. I like to take an extreme approach. We give the designer just the barest idea of what we need, then jump for joy over whatever they produce. After a few projects you will have a creative who loves the freedom you give them. They will come up with wonderful ideas you never could have thought of on your own.

How Loosing My Top 10 Website Ranking Was The Best Thing That Could Have Happened
by Paul EastonPlease picture this, it's September 2005, I have 2 web sites in the top 5 in different focused areas. They represent months and in some cases, years of effort. Sales come in daily and life is good so I get comfortable ready for Xmas rush.
Then as of 18 Oct both sites drop in ranking. Now not a small drop but not in the top 9000 results! Google has updated and my sites are no longer looked at in the same way.
My first thought was, what did I do wrong? After composing my thoughts I looked closer to at the results…Then something really interesting happens…One of my sites rebounds back and better than it was before. (was number 3 came back up to number 1 and is still there as I write this)
This makes me to take a close look at what was *different* between the sites. Both started out with a similar promotion, but the one that came back had a different promotion applied to it.
Both sites had exchanged many links and had got top ranking because of it. The site that rebounded had used "one way links" in the form of articles. This is telling me that these one way links are now more important than reciprocal and could be the way of the future.
For those unfamiliar with articles, writing a 400-600 word article, with a small resource box telling about the authors website. Then submitting to article directory's, email newsletters and sites that accept outside articles.
Here is a step by step way of how to use Google to find places to submit articles on any specific market. Say you produce products for "weight loss" or "diet plan"
1. Search in Google but think of the big picture. Instead of using "weight" search for "health"
2. Scroll to the bottom of the result page and click the "search in results" links
3. Enter in the text box "submit article" with the quote marks, which will look for exact matches to the search term.
This should allow you to find at least 500 sites that would accept your articles. Once you have covered those, you could start again for different key words.
Reciprocal Linking should still be part of your website marketing strategy and should be uses together with one way links. Articles are only one form of getting one way links but they are a proven method.
Other methods such as Affiliate links, press releases and directory submissions also form a way of increasing links and credibility.

A Little Humor
Next Time
=-=-=-=-=-=One rainy evening, my husband, John, and I emerged from a restaurant only to find that he had locked the keys in the car. He insisted he could open the door with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one. There were none to be found.
John then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a hanger. After a few attempts, he got the door open and we climbed in. As we sat there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat. With a smug grin, he said, "Now if this ever happens again, I'll have one."

My husband's uncle thought he had conquered his problem of trying to remember his wife's birthday and, also, their anniversary. He opened an account with a florist, provided that florist with the dates and instructions to send flowers to his wife on these dates along with an appropriate note signed, "Your loving husband."
His wife was thrilled by this new display of attention and all went well until one day when he came home he saw a bouquet, kissed his wife and said offhandedly, "Nice flowers, honey. Where'd you get them?"
-----
There's a little fellow named Junior who hangs out at the local grocery store. The manager doesn't know what Junior's problem is, but the boys like to tease him. They say he is two bricks short of a load, or two pickles shy of a barrel.
To prove it, sometimes the boys offer Junior his choice between a nickel and a dime. He always takes the nickel, they say, because it's bigger.
One day after Junior grabbed the nickel, the store manager got him off to one side and said, "Junior, those boys are making fun of you. They think you don't know the dime is worth more than the nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it's bigger, or what?"
Junior said, "Well, if I took the dime, they'd quit doing it!"

Part of my job as a 911 dispatcher is to interrogate callers who are in various states of panic so I can send the appropriate emergency equipment.
One day a woman called to say that a family member had fallen and needed to go to a hospital.
After finding out where she lived and assuring her that the paramedics would arrive shortly, I asked her, "Do you know what caused the fall?"
"No," the woman nervously replied. "What?"

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellIs There Lead In Your Child's Lunchbox?
With all we know about the hazards lead poses to children, it would seem that products containing lead would be totally unavailable in such an advanced nation as ours. But as it turns out, this isn't the case. And I'm not talking about a little bit of lead, either. At least one lunchbox—an Angela Anaconda lunchbox made by a company called Targus International—turned out, in independent tests ordered by the CEH (Center for Environmental Health), an Oakland-based environmental group, to contain 90 times the 600 parts per million (ppm) limit for paint used in children's products. Other boxes tested out at 2 to 25 times the legal limit for lead content. In some instances, the lead was found inside of the box that's contaminated—the paint on the inside of the box, which means a high likelihood of lead coming directly into contact with your child's PB&J. Or, the child could get lead on her hands before eating, and the lead could then go onto her food and into her body in that fashion.
Lead is a neurotoxin that can adversely affect a child's developing brain, causing learning and behavior problems. It was long used as a stabilizing agent and pigment in paints, until its toxicity was recognized in the 1970s. Lead paint was banned by 1978. But products made in other countries, where lead paint can still be used, can be significantly contaminated with lead. The CEH believes that the lead contamination in lunchboxes comes from lead used as a paint pigment or stabilizer.
While vinyl lunch boxes don't contain enough lead to cause symptomatic, acute poisoning, this contamination can add up when other sources of lead exposure are considered. And levels far below those that cause outright toxicity have been linked with developmental problems in children. Symptoms of lead poisoning may include stomachache, headache, poor appetite, slow growth, developmental delays, and hyperactivity.
The CEH recommends not using any type of vinyl lunch box, because we don't yet know which boxes contain lead and which do not. Metal boxes, insulated fabric bags, or cloth bags are your best bet. You can test your child's box if you like—for directions on doing so, buy a commercially available lead testing kit or go to www.cehca.org/lunchboxes.htm for more detailed instructions.
The presence of lead in food, spices, and Ayurvedic remedies has been detected and prosecuted by state health departments and attorneys general as recently as 2004 and earlier in 2005. Buyer, beware.
