What to Do When a Customer Says "No"

Do you feel angry or defeated when rejected by a potential customer? Don't worry! Just because a customer says "no" the first time, doesn't mean they won't say "yes" later on.  Here are some tips to help you get that sale!

1. If you are rejected, you might send them a letter thanking them for their time and ask them to keep you in mind if they should ever need your type of business.

2. Try asking the customer for a reference to someone who might want to know about your product or service. Be sure to write them a thank you note for their leads.

3. Make sure that you always speak well of others.  Criticizing often shuts the door on any chance you might have to make a sale with a customer as well as anyone they might know. Word-of-mouth can make or break you as a salesperson!

Above all, DON'T GIVE UP! Follow up with them. They may have just needed some time before deciding to purchase.  Remember that how you handle rejections makes a strong impression on potential customers.

Leaving Secrets: How to Create a Personal Instruction Manual for Life

Imagine if your great, great grandfather or grandmother had left you a book with their secrets for living. Maybe it contained nuggets of wisdom, yummy recipes, favorite jokes, or just insights for how to lead a good life. Ever since people learned of my next book, Life’s Missing Instruction Manual, people are curious how to create their own “manual” for life.

You can leave such a book for your own family. What are the key lessons you’ve learned in your life? Are you ready to share them with your children and grandchildren  or with your friend, siblings, parents, and grandparents?

What you’ve gleaned from your life experiences can make things easier for your children or your relatives. In fact, the lessons you’ve earned from trial and error can be the perfect gift for everyone in your life  or for one person who matters to you. Here’s how to commit your insights to writing and share them with your fellow life travelers.

• Carry a pad of paper around with you everywhere for a week.
• Jot down your thoughts and observations as they occur to you. Don’t judge them. Just make note of them.
• Add personal stories and memories, as they come to mind. Again, don’t edit your thoughts. Just commit them to paper.
• Take a few days to go through your notes, and underline the most important passages, and make additional comments in the margins.
• From this, distill the lessons you most want to share with others: your perspective, your values, what matters most to you, and your reactions to the world around you.
• Find a beautiful journal or blank book  one that you feel a strong connection with. You might find it at a bookstore, an antique store, an online auction site, a craft store, or even a flea market. Where you find it doesn’t matter. How you feel about it does.
• Fill the journal with your own instruction manual for life. Make sure to include a title and your name.
• Find a special person to share it with, and turn the presentation of the journal into a celebration.

If you don’t feel comfortable writing your notes and stories, you can dictate them into a portable tape recorder, and later, you can transcribe them into a journal. You don’t have to be a bestselling author, academic, or philosopher to create a instruction manual that can helped your loved ones every day of their lives . . . and be passed on to future generations as well.

The Not-So-Dumb Blonde

I came in to work early the other day and began hanging upside down from the ceiling. Just then one of my co-workers (she's blonde ... it'll be important later) came in and asked me what I'm doing.

"Shh," I said, " I'm a light bulb -- I'm acting crazy to get a few days off, as there is an out of town wedding I need to go to until Tuesday."

A minute later the boss walked by and asked me what I was doing.

"I'm a light bulb!" I exclaimed.

"You're going crazy," he said. "Take a few days off, and come back when you are less stressed."

With that, I jumped down and started walking out. My co-worker started following me and the boss asked where she was going.

"I can't work in the dark," she said.

In many countries, it is the custom to wish friends a "Happy Birthday" on January 1st, rather than a "Happy New Year." This day is nicknamed "Everyman's Birthday," and is considered the day when everyone becomes a year older, whether it's their actual day of birth or not. Changes In Prostate Cancer Treatment: Less Watchful Waiting, More Surgery
 Prostate cancer is enormously common, and its treatment has been problematic. A tricky balancing act has been imposed on men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer (and their medical teams): to surgically remove the gland, risking possible damage to surrounding nerves, which could lead to impotence and/or incontinence, or to "watchfully wait" and see whether the cancer grows or not?

 Surgery to remove the prostate gland would, at first, seem the best route—take the gland out entirely and you can prevent the cancer from spreading. Research has shown that mortality from prostate cancer is about 50 percent lower when the prostate is removed soon after the diagnosis is made, compared with the watchful waiting approach.   Some prostate cancers never do spread.

Autopsy studies on men who died from other causes often reveal small prostate cancers that were never detected. On the other hand, researchers following prostate cancer trends in Britain found that men who watchfully waited for years could end up dying from a cancer that suddenly transformed into a far more dangerous and fast-growing version. There, surgery to remove the prostate is now the first-line therapy for prostate cancer, with surgery rates up 20-fold since 1995, and it's likely that American doctors will follow suit.

There have been important changes in prostate surgery techniques in recent years—nerve-sparing procedures that protect the nerves surrounding the gland, making impotence and incontinence less common issues following surgery.   For anyone who is concerned about prostate health, or who needs to make decisions about treatment of any prostate problem, I'd like to recommend an excellent book, Dr. Katz's Guide to Prostate Health: From Conventional to Holistic Therapies (Freedom Press, 2006).

The book was written by Aaron Katz, M.D., a urologist who founded the Columbia University’s Center for Holistic Urology. It covers every base, giving the most up-to-date information on both mainstream and alternative approaches (herbs, nutrition) for prostate disease. It’s the wave of the future: combining the best of the mainstream with the gifts of natural medicine. If you see a urologist now, recommend to him or her that he or she buy the book too.
