Biz Tips
by Dr. Kevin NunleyMarketing With Small Signs
Small signs are a terrifically powerful to promote your small business at almost no cost.
Start your sign with a headline that can easily be read from a distance of 20 feet. Keep the copy short and simple.
Tailor your message to the neighborhood your sign is in. One woman is doing very well putting her signs about earning extra income part-time in neighborhoods of young families and minimum wage workers.
Another is doing well with a sign advertising house cleaning and baby sitting services in a neighborhood filled with professional women who have lots of money and very little time.
Every time I write about small signs several people write to tell me signs just junk up the landscape. The mayor in my town recently took the same approach giving small sign owners tickets and telling them to "buy advertising like everybody else."
But not all communities feel this way. Many places aren't bothered by signs and a few even welcome them as evidence of a thriving small business culture.
Be careful putting signs on other people's property. Make sure you are aware of any local ordinances regarding signs including the area's history for enforcing their regulations.

Managing: you're not one of the gang any more
by Helen WilkieManaging people who used to be your peers presents its own special set of challenges. More than a few budding management careers have foundered on these rocky shores.
Trouble typically comes when the manager adopts one of two extremes. He or she either flaunts the new position and behaves arrogantly towards workers, or tries to maintain the same chummy relationship as before, almost pretending the promotion hadn't happened.
As a manager, you should avoid both extremes. Here's why.
It's possible that some of your people will resent your promotion, feeling that they were equally qualified for the job. If you take a high-handed attitude towards them you'll only compound that resentment. The natural human reaction will be to resist your efforts to manage, making your job more difficult.
If you try to maintain your former relationship, on the other hand, you still set yourself up for failure. It may seem like a good idea at first because you may feel your friends will be on your side. But managers often have to make unpopular decisions or criticize people's work, and when this happens they will feel betrayed because you've put them in a position of not knowing where they stand.
In either case, you'll have lost an opportunity to build the trust that is so necessary to your success.
So what's the answer?
I recommend that you be up front with your people from the first day. In your first department or team meeting, address the issue directly. Tell them you realize one of them could easily have been made manager instead of you, and that you are honored to be the one chosen to lead them. Mention the advantage of having worked in the department and knowing how it works. Finally, tell them you will listen respectfully to their ideas, represent their interests to senior management and see that they get recognition for their efforts.
Warn them that as manager you will sometimes have to make decisions they won't like, but promise to treat them fairly and with consideration. Ask that in return, they make every effort to adapt to the new situation and work with you to the benefit of the team.
Then live up to your commitments. Conduct yourself professionally, and you'll soon earn the respect, trust and loyalty of your people.

Dinner Blessing
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=My wife invited some people to dinner.
At the table, she turned to our six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?"
"I wouldn't know what to say," she replied.
"Just say what you hear Mommy say," my wife said.
Our daughter bowed her head and said: "Dear Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"

To help a friend lose weight, I told her that she should switch to lower-fat foods, including skim milk. When she said her family would drink only whole milk, I suggested that she keep their regular container and refill it with skim milk.
This worked for quite a while, until her daughter asked one morning whether the milk was okay. "Sure, it's fine," my friend answered, fearing she had been found out. "Why do you ask?"
The daughter explained, "Well, according to the expiration date, this milk expired two years ago!"

The man replied, "That's one benefit of owning the company...."

No matter what internet marketing or networking biz you may be in...this tool may be the help you're looking for! If the Internet is the fastest growing marketplace in the world, then video is the most effective form of communication ON the internet.
Studies show that using video on the net increases the likelihood that YOUR message will be remembered. $2 billion a year is already being spent in the US alone on digital and streaming media. The projections put that number at $12 billion around 2010.

Fact of the Day

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellHeart Failure Drug For African-Americans May Increase Risk Of Lupus
You may recall the stir that attended the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval of BiDil (hydralazine hydrochloride plus isosorbide dinitrate) in the summer of 2005. The drug was advertised to African-Americans with heart failure—the first drug targeted for use by a specific ethnic group.
African-Americans have elevated risk of heart failure compared with other ethnic groups, and women of this race die twice as often as white women from heart failure. African-American women are also at increased risk of lupus, an auto-immune disease that attacks the joints, causing pain and possibly permanent damage, and may also cause damage to internal organs, including the kidneys.
Concerns have been raised that hydralazine hydrochloride, which has been found to cause lupus in rare instances, may not be an ideal drug for people of African-American descent. When it is given alone, generic hydralazine hydrochloride package inserts advise users of the drug to get tested every six months for lupus. In clinical studies of BiDil, only one patient developed lupus while on the drug. However, patients using BiDil were four times more likely than placebo patients to have joint pain—a symptom of lupus.
Some doctors who think lupus tests should be a standard part of long-term BiDil use worry that patients who develop lupus symptoms will think they’re simply a side effect from the drug, and won’t seek treatment. What isn't mentioned here is that lupus—an autoimmune condition—is notoriously difficult to treat, and that there is no known cure, although the disease may resolve with or without treatment.
The existing treatments used to control the disease are linked with dangerous side effects and reduced quality of life. If a heart failure treatment is linked with increased lupus risk, and there are other treatments that don't have this risk that work equally well, those are the treatments that should be used. I don't see how testing patients for lupus while they take a drug believed to cause it (even if in rare cases) is an answer to the problem. Treatments that don’t cause potentially life-threatening autoimmune conditions, especially if they belong to a population that is genetically predisposed to developing those conditions (as African-Americans are), should be favored, it seems.
Why a drug just for African-Americans? Two of the more commonly prescribed heart failure drugs—ACE inhibitors such as enalapril and angiotensin receptor blockers such as losartan (Cozaar)—have been found to work less effectively in African-American study subjects. BiDil works through an entirely different mechanism—it increases levels of a blood-vessel-dilating substance called nitric oxide (that's what the isosorbide dinitrate does) and helps protect it against being deactivated too quickly (that's what the hydralazine is for).
Why would a blood pressure drug cause lupus antibodies to form in four percent of the people who use it? (Only a small percentage of these people ever end up with full-blown systemic lupus.) The current theory is that there are differences in drug detoxification enzyme activity that cause a dose that isn’t harmful in most people to cause harm in a small percentage of those who use the drug. Some experts recommend that acetylation levels should be measured in those who are prescribed this drug to weed out those who might be at greater risk of developing lupus as a result of using it.
This appears to be a wave of the future: developing tests that will enable doctors to avoid prescribing potentially harmful drugs to people whose bodies can't handle them. Coenzyme Q10 is currently the best-known natural therapy for heart failure, but it isn’t stand-alone. I don’t suggest not medically treating heart failure—it’s a life-threatening disease, and mainstream therapies are probably necessary.
