Biz Tips
by Dr. Kevin NunleyDon't Send a Resume, Send a Bio
Press kits and sales packages should include background information on you and your company. Many people, especially professionals, include a resume. A one page bio works much better. You can include a one page bio on yourself and anther bio on your organization.
Start with a catchy first few sentences that give you the right slant. "John Jones has been interested in selling ever since he opened a lemonade stand at the age of 10. His mother called him in well after dark to find he had sold over 2,000 cups. John's determination to succeed continues today as he builds innovative web sites for dozens of companies."
In the next few paragraphs you can go back and fill in more details. Tell what John studied in college, how he joined togther with two classmates to form his first company, and how they slept on the couch their first year while plowing profits into development.
The bio takes the info that might be in your resume and puts it in a more entertaining and readable form.

Time To Move Up From the Worn-Out Sales Brochure
by John JantschI got another one of those calls the other day. . ."Can you make me a brochure?" Many business owners have been sold on the notion that they need a tri-fold brochure or they are not in business. Forget it...everybody's got one and no one uses it.
Your potential clients need an education. They need to know how you are different. (The typical tri-fold brochure simply confirms that you are the same.)
Every small business should create the following pieces of information and format them in a way that allows them be printed inexpensively and updated often. I like to call this approach, the Marketing Kit. Your marketing kit starts with several professionally printed pieces that are the framework for up to 10 or 12 different educational documents. The core components are:
1. A pocket folder - A multi-use workhorse, this piece alone, if designed well, can send the message that you are in business to stay. (This one will cost a little but it has many uses)
2. A marketing kit template page - This should be a professionally printed piece that carries your logo and contact information but is different than your letterhead. This is the base piece for the pages described below that insert into your pocket folder. (Your actual marketing files can be MSWord type documents that are laser printed. This gives you the ability to change and update your content and also allows you to tailor your marketing kit content to specific prospects.)
Some combination of the following pages should be created for your marketing kit.
+ The Difference Page - Hit them with how you are different and shower them with benefits of doing business with you. Don't tell them what you do. I like to keep this one to the top 3 or 4 things that you do that your target market will value. Think benefits that are unique
+ Deeper Differences - Now take each core difference and tell the reader in greater detail why and how that difference is important
+ A list of services/products - Okay, now tell them what you do or what you offer.
+ Deeper Product/Service Descriptions - Go into detail on each of your product or service offerings
+ Case Studies - Pick representative clients or industries and outline how your product or service solved someone else's challenge. People learn in different ways and case studies allow them to see themselves getting relief. I think this format works well. State the situation, the problem, your solution, the result. Over time you can collect more and more of these and draw upon the ones that fit an industry or problem that in relevant to your prospect.
+ Testimonials - Get quotes from real live clients and create a page titled - "See what others have to say about us." These quotes can be some of the strongest selling tools you have. New technologies make it easy to create audio and video testimonials too.
+ Client List - In some cases, just simply listing who else you do business with can present a compelling case.
+ Process Description - Show them how you do what you do. Create detailed checklist and flow charts that show them how you keep your promise. In many cases you have these anyway but by making them part of your marketing you can demonstrate how much more professional your organization is. These also help you justify why you charge a premium for your services. Many people underestimate how much really goes into delivering a quality product or service. So show them.
+ Your Story - Many companies have interesting or even gut wrenching histories. Tell them your story in an open, honest, and entertaining way and you will win their hearts as well as their heads.
All of the above pieces can, in many cases, be word processed files that are laser printed onto the template I described above. You can learn even more about how to use this unique tool here
This format allow for very inexpensive printing and a great deal of flexibility when you need to update, change or even personalize your magnificent marketing materials.

Power Supply
=-=-=-=-=-=-=After experiencing difficulties with his computer, a poor gentleman who didn't really know his way around the machines called Tech Support. "Hello. How can I help you today?" the tech asked.
"There's smoke coming from the power supply on my computer."
"Well," said the technician, "that's sounds pretty easy. You need a new power supply."
"No," replied the user, "I just need to change the startup files."
"Sir, what you're describing is a problem with your power supply. It needs to be replaced."
"No," insisted the customer, "a good friend who knows a lot about these things told me I just need to change the system startup files to fix the problem. I just need you to give me the right commands to enter."
This went on for a few minutes. Finally, in frustration, the Tech Support advisor says, "Look, I'm sorry. We don't normally tell our customers this, but there's an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem."
"I knew it!" the user exulted.
"Yes. Just add the line 'LOAD NO SMOKE' to the end of your 'config.sys' file and everything should work fine. Let me know how it goes."
With that, the Tech Support advisor ends the call. About ten minutes later, the same customer calls back. "It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking...."
"I see," responded Tech Support. "What version of DOS are you using?"
"Ummmm....the manual says MS-DOS 6.22."
"Well, there's your problem. That version of DOS doesn't include the NO SMOKE command. You need to contact Microsoft and ask them for an upgrade patch."
Almost an hour later, Mr. Tech Support's phone rings again. "I need a new power supply," the customer says, humbly.
"Really. What makes you think that?"
"I called Microsoft and explained everything to them and told them what you said about upgrading my DOS, and then they asked me who had manufactured my power supply ... and then they told me my power supply isn't compatible with the NO SMOKE command. Do you have one that is?"

I couldn't decide whether to go to Salt Lake City or Denver for my vacation. I wanted to visit Denver, but money was tight so I called the airlines and decided to let the fare amount settle my indecision.
"Airfare to Denver is $300 per person," said the cheery reservation agent.
"Oh dear," I replied. "What about Salt Lake City?"
"Oh, we have a really great rate right now to Salt Lake City ... only $99, but there is a stopover."
"Where?"
"In Denver."

Two guys were at a bar talking about how highly their wives
thought of them. The first guy said,
"My wife, she thinks so much of me that she won't let me do any
work around the house. It's great."The second guy says,
"That's nothing. My wife thinks I'm a God.""She thinks you're God? What makes you say that?"
"Easy. Every night she places a burnt offering before me."

The restaurant where I took my two sons for a meal was crowded with fans watching a sporting event on television. The harried waitress took our order, but more than half an hour passed with no sign of her return.
I was trying to keep my kids from becoming restless when suddenly, shouts of victory came from the bar.
"Hey," commented my 11-year-old, "it sounds as if someone just got his food."

The Bingham Canyon copper mine in Utah is the biggest manmade hole on Earth. It is more than a half-mile deep and 2.5 miles across. An astronaut can see this hole from the space shuttle with his bare eyes.
Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl MindellFish Fears: The Scoop On Farmed VS. Wild Salmon Unless you've been living under a coral reef, you know that salmon is a highly recommended “superfood.” You also may know that wild-caught salmon is more healthful than cheaper, more easily accessible farmed salmon. What you may not know is why. You might be tempted, when choosing between farmed salmon at half the price per pound of wild-caught, to go ahead and buy the cheaper fish so that you and your family can get the benefit of eating salmon without breaking the bank. Here's the most recent news on the hazards of eating farmed salmon, the production of which has increased 40-fold over the past few years to try to meet high demand for this delectable fish.
Small studies—most notably, one from environmental watchdog group EWG (Environmental Working Group)—had already shown that farm-raised salmon had much higher content of hormone-disrupting environmental toxins such as PCBs than wild salmon. A recent study from Indiana University researchers, involving more than two metric tons of North American, South American, and European salmon, appears to have nailed the lid on the coffin of any debate over wild vs. farmed.Gas chromatographic, a high-resolution spectrometry, was used to analyze levels of organochlorine toxins in salmon samples from all over the world. Farm-raised Atlantic salmon had significantly higher levels of 13 toxins compared with wild Pacific salmon; levels of 14 toxins were higher in both European and North American farm-raised salmon than in wild. Best performer in the farmed fish category: South American farm-raised salmon, which was lower in certain toxins than wild-caught. European farm-raised salmon performed worst in the tests, with higher toxin levels than North or South American farmed fish. The numbers suggested that while wild-caught salmon is safe to eat eight meals per month (i.e., this would not introduce unsafe levels of toxins into the body), farm-raised salmon should only be consumed twice per month because it contains so many of these toxins.
Investigators also analyzed toxin levels in the chow fed to farmed fish in various places. Not surprisingly, the toxin levels in the fish chow was a good predictor of toxin levels in the salmon that ate it
