Tweak Your Home Page for Instant Results

The immortal words of The Clash, singing, "Should I stay or should I go," are what run through a prospects mind every time they visit a new site--that is, unless your home page gives the right impression immediately.

To ensure that your home page is perfectly honed to receive visitors, here are a few simple tweaks you can make:

1. Loading Time - Never assume that most of your visitors will have a broadband Internet connection, or posses a download speed that can handle a home page with a large k size. Many of your visitors will still be on a 56k modem and won't even bother with your site if it takes more than 20 seconds to download. To ensure a speedy download, keep your home page design clean and simple. Make sure your images are compressed as this minimizes the download time.

2. A Taste of What's to Come - People come to your site hoping for a great deal, an unbeatable offer, so don't hide your best products or offers where visitors have to search for them. Showcase some of your best features on the home page so visitors will know right away what you have to offer.

3. Links - Links are the gateway to important destinations on your site. They make the navigation process quicker and easier for your visitors, so be sure to keep that area of the home page clean and simple.

Most visitors look to the top or the left side of the page for links, so don't try to be unique by putting them in some obscure area. You will just make it harder for your visitors to find them.

Use eye-catching icons near your links to draw the visitor's eye, but don't go overboard. Remember that simplicity is the key to easy navigation. You want to draw the visitor's attention but not annoy them with a jumble of graphics.

Trivia

In Georgia, Gwinnett County has a law that forbids residents from keeping rabbits as pets. The county livestock law restricts rabbits to farm areas and homes with at least three acres of land. The law was amended in 1993 to allow Vietnamese potbellied pigs as pets after a woman with a pet pig pleaded for the exemption.

12 Essential Business Referral Tips by Joel Weiner

1. To receive referrals from word of mouth advertising, you need to work on stimulating them on a regular basis.

2. Have a drawing for one of your bigger ticket items and then give lottery tickets to your customers to give to their friends and associates.  The ticket stubs need to be filled out and returned to be eligible for the drawing.

3. Print your business contact information and a favorite saying or defining goal of your company on a shirt, hat, decal, refrigerator magnet, bumper sticker etc.  Then give these items to customers to use or share with friends.

4. To have ongoing referrals you need to turn suspects into prospects, prospects into customers, customers into clients and clients into friends.  Friends will do regular business with you and refer all their friends.

5. Leverage your time in obtaining referrals by participating in public speaking engagements.  Provide a comment card following your presentation that will generate referrals for your 'free' information or sample.

6. Always reward your customers for their referrals. Whether it's a note, a phone call, a gift, or monetary compensation, if you show your gratitude you will be rewarded with repeat business and additional referrals.

7. To help satisfied customers think of valid names to refer, suggest they consider business associates, friends, church members, social groups, neighbors, relatives, professional group associates, and friends through sports, clubs or hobbies.

8. Not only is a prospect a potential customer, they can be a treasure chest of referrals if you treat them well. Even if they don't make a purchase, ask them who they know that would benefit from your product or service.  Your prospect may not need it, but they have at least one acquaintance that does.

9. Participate in volunteer opportunities that match your interests or talents.  Do it with a sincere heart, not a business head, and as you give back to your community, your circle of influence grows too.

10. Always have plenty of business or information request cards when you are at a networking event.  As you get acquainted with new contacts, trade cards and note follow-up or personal information on the back of their card.  Then be sure to follow-up!

11. Consider putting a positive twist on all you say.  Even discussing your competitors product with a customer can have a few positive comments before you launch into how your product benefits will fit their needs better.

12. Always have an interesting and informative 60 second commercial ready that extols the benefits of your amazing company.  Pique the interest of your listeners and you will be remembered during referral opportunities.

A Little Humor

Musical Instrument
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

My wife and I were browsing in a crafts store when I noticed a display of country-style musical instruments. After looking over the flutes, dulcimers and recorders, I picked up a shiny, one-stringed instrument I took to be a mouth harp.

I put it to my lips and, much to the amusement of other shoppers, twanged a few notes on it. After watching from a distance, my wife approached and whispered in my ear,

"I hate to tell you this, dear, but you're trying to play a cheese slicer."

-----

My kids love going to the Web, and they keep track of their passwords by writing them on Post-it notes.

I noticed their Disney password was "MickeyMinnieGoofyPluto," and so I asked why it was so long.

"Because,"my son explained, "they say it has to have at least four characters."

-----

My husband, Michael, and I were at a restaurant with his boss, a rather stern older man. When Michael began a tale, which I was sure he had told before, I gave him a kick under the table. There was no response, so I gave him another poke. Still the story went on. Suddenly he stopped, grinned and said, "Oh, but I've told you this one before, haven't I?"

We all chuckled and changed the subject. Later, on the dance floor, I asked my husband why it had taken him so long to get my message.

"What do you mean?" he replied. "I cut the story off as soon as you kicked me."

"But I kicked you twice and it still took you awhile to stop!"

Suddenly we realized what had happened. Sheepishly we returned to our table. The boss smiled and said, "Don't worry. After the second kick I figured it wasn't for me, so I passed it along!"

-----

After 17 years of marriage, a man dumped his wife for a younger woman. The downtown luxury apartment was in his name and he wanted to remain there with his new love so he asked the wife to move out and he would get her another place. The wife agreed to this, but asked that she be given 3 days on her own there, to pack up her things.

While he was gone, the first day she lovingly put her personal belongings into boxes and crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their candlelit dining table, soft music playing in the background, and feasted on a pound of shrimp and a bottle of wine. When she had finished, she went into each room and deposited a few of the resulting shrimp shells into the hollow of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

The husband came back, with his new girlfriend, and all was bliss for the first few days. Then it started; slowly but surely. Clueless, the man could not explain why the place smelled so bad. They tried everything; cleaned & mopped and aired the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents, carpets were steam cleaned, Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in, the carpets were replaced, and on it went. Finally, they could take it no more and decided to move.

The moving company arrived and did a very professional packing job, taking everything to their new home ... including the curtain rods.

Fact of the Day

When Russian men engage in conversation, the distance between the two is typically about ten inches. This is considered a comfortable proximity; American men, on the other hand, consider something closer to two feet as preferable.

Health Tip of the Week
by Dr. Earl Mindell

Breastfeeding Moms At Lower Risk Of Diabetes

A friend with a five-year-old daughter told me about one of those “kids say the darndest things” moments. The child said brightly during a conversation about where humanity came from, “We're made of monkeys!” With a few questions, her mother ascertained that the child was referring to her understanding that monkeys and humans were related along the scale of evolutionary history. “Yeah,” the child said, “That's what I mean—we revolved from monkeys.”

Like humans, monkeys nurse their young. The evolution of the nursing relationship extends beyond our own species to those from which we evolved. The baby bottle filled with infant formula is such a recent invention that we still don't fully comprehend the lifelong consequences of a baby going without mother's milk. And when we pass up the gift of breast milk, that natural, perfect baby food developed over millions of years of evolution, the consequences appear to be far-reaching, affecting the lifelong health of mother and infant.

We are learning how complex and living a food breast milk is—it changes from day to day, from feeding to feeding, even within a single feeding, in an intricate dance with the growth of the infant. No matter what is done to improve formulas—and they have vastly improved over the past 50 years, and even more since the Victorian era, when bottle-feeding became the rage in Western nations and only one of 10 babies survived infancy—it will never match the elixir created specifically for babies in their mother's body.

Mothers who breastfeed have lowered risk of breast cancer, most likely because they empty their breasts of many of the fat-soluble chemical toxins that accumulate in that fatty tissue over their lifetime. Breastfeeding also ensures complete maturation of breast tissue, which also defends against the development of cancer. The longer a mother nurses, the more her risk drops. Although calcium is taken from the mom's bones to make milk, changes in her absorption of dietary calcium and the utilization of this mineral in her body maintain and strengthen bones, reducing risk of osteoporosis. Ovarian cancer risk is also reduced with breastfeeding. Now, new research shows that there may be a connection between decreased diabetes risk and breastfeeding.

In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers analyzed health data from thousands of women participating in the famous Nurses' Health Study. Women who breast-fed their babies for one or more years had a 15 percent decreased risk of developing diabetes later in life. Every additional year of breastfeeding caused their risk to drop an additional 15 percent.

Why would nursing reduce diabetes risk? The results of this study build on older research that established the benefits of breastfeeding on mom's metabolism and post-partum weight loss. Improved weight control may be the explanation, and there may be other more complex, as-yet-unexplained factors to consider. But it appears that breastfeeding is, for women who still have that choice, an excellent way to help protect your health and to promote better health in your children, who will have decreased risk of asthma, eczema, ear infections and upper respiratory infections.
